Hello and welcome! QueenAdreena have played in the USA a couple of
times - in New York & LA; but a band of their size just cannot afford
to tour the USA extensively. They are not rich! They play in the UK
fairly regularly (as they live in London, it's usually in London),
and also play in France quite frequently. They did a short tour of
Japan last year, and may do so again now that they are signed to a
Japanese label. Hope this helps! Although the chances of them playing
Richmond are pretty slim I am afraid...

Does Queen Adreena ever play in the States at all? I live in Richmond
Virginia of all places, it's not easy being a huge fan of Cardiacs (who
never play over here), and now this bunch.
My thanks to the kind soul who dropped that storming live version of 'X-

I really like the new tune... It's not especially trippy or clever but it's good trashy rock with a beat you can sway to, and it definitely sounds like QA

I was lucky enough to travel to see QueenAdreena at Le Havre in France
last month, and again in Kilburn (North London) this Tuesday. I managed
to grab a few words with bass player Nomi Leonard, and she told me that
QueenAdreena have already recorded a couple of sessions for the new
album (due later this year) in London. Production duties are by
old 'Daisy Chainsaw' Engineer Teo Miller, and the sessions have
been 'one take' and are (in Nomi's words) even more raw than 'Drink
Me'. Coupled with the quality of the new material ('Lick the
Itch'; 'Naked Ruby Blue'; 'Killer Tits'; 'Happy Now' and 'Life Support
Machine' have all been played live) this is all very good news.
Posted on their 'myspace' earlier today:

Nomi told us a good anecdote from Japan at 'The Dogbones' gig last
night. There is a reason that Crispin was wearing those enormous
sunglasses. He got jet-lagged from the flight, went clubbing, got
drunk, couldn't sleep, and then fell asleep whilst walking on the road.
Face met pavement, teeth were broken, eyes were blackened, and several
stiches were needed. Ouch. The Man's a trooper for still playing the
gig! Top bloke...
The Dogbones played another short-notice gig last night at Camden's
tiny Dublin Castle venue, scene of QueenAdreena's gig in 2004
as 'Princess Carwash'. They were first on of three bands, and opened to
only about 20 people, although it did fill up a bit later... The new
set up is now to use a single bass drum with Bambi & Vince sharing it
from opposite sides. They still play a tribal percussion with no snare
drums, and Nomi now plays only guitar, with no bass used at all... The
guitar sound is jagged & raw, and the vocals are shared between Crispin
& Nomi's Bottom-of the-gut screams. Crispin worked really hard tonight,
playing solos behind his head, swinging his guitar around his head, and
going on walkabout around the venue. There were two new songs out of
the eight played tonight, and the band just seem to be getting better
with each gig. These are just a great band, and deserve a bigger stage
than they are currently getting. Go and support 'em!
There a couple of photos in the files section...

Crispin's new project 'The Dogbones' are getting plenty of live action
in London lately. They played at 'Metro' in Oxford Street last night
(Tuesday 13th) - a gig that had practically no notice or advertising;
and will play again next Tuesday (20th November) at Camden Town's
Dublin Castle venue. It's not on their 'myspace' yet, but I am assured
that they will be playing...
This was posted by Nomi in the forums this morning at
www.queenadreena.net:
Thought you might like to know.... the new Queenadreena album 'Ride A
Cock Horse' is available to buy now from
www.myspace.com/queenadreenafrance along with other qa merchandise....
xXx
- I have a copy already (bought from the last French gig), and it is 4
track demo versions of material from the 'Taxidermy' sessions in
1999/2000. There are 14 tracks, including about 10 never before heard
ones, and although obviously raw, they are well worth a listen. An
early 'taxidermy' version of 'Hotel Aftershow' is just genius. Let us
know what you think if you purchase a copy!
These live dates in London just up on 'The Dogbones' website:

Also, for anyone who hasn't seen it, Nomi of 'The Dogbones' did an e-
mail interview thing for me last week. It goes like this:
-All of 'The Dogbones' are involved in other, better known acts. What
was the incentive to start a new band; and how does it impact on your
other projects?
the incentive was the demise of wendykurk and a mutual desire for
crispin and i to work together... we had no idea how we would work
together or what would happen... it was by happy coincidence that i
ended up in queenadreena. The dogbones has no affect on qa we make
sure of that...although juggling two bands can be tricky it's very do-
able
-The band seem to have a great sense of fun in their live show, with
lyrics that are very cynical of the music business. Are you really
that cynical, or are you just poking a bit of fun?
the lyrics you are referring to are crispins.. they are pokeing fun
but he really is that cynical too...actually i think he's just being
honest in a very tongue in cheek way,,,the man has had 20 years of
third degree industry burns the fact that he can write about that in
a fun way is pretty twisted but admirable...my hat's off to him
anyway...
-How do the songs come together? Do you write together in rehearsal,
or do you all bring individual songs in?
initially we write the songs seperately... i write mine and crispin
writes his we bring them to rehearsal and bambi and vince glue it
all together...rehearsals are so fucking expensive we don't really
have the time to jam songs out together we do arrange most of it
together tho.
-How did the 'double drummer' idea come about? Are you all
massive 'Adam and the Ants' and 'Gary Glitter' fans?
adam ant is cool...but i'm not sure if that was the inspiration ... i
can't remember how we came up with that idea.. it was just always the
intention...we wanted a primal band and having two drumers seemed
like a good way to achieve that kind of sound...
-I know that you were a fan of 'QueenAdreena' before you met Crispin
and joined the band. How does it feel actually being part of a band
that you followed as a fan?
fucking amazing. i can't really express how lucky i feel. the old
wendykurk guitarist and i used to go to as many qa gigs as we
possibly could every time they toured,,,we used to sleep in train
stations afterwards all over the country... i remember the first time
we seen them we were on acid and i remember thinking "i must know
these people"... it's like ...fuck...by what magic did this happen? i
must have been due some good karma. i get the feeling i will never
sleep in another train station for any band ever again.
-I know that there is a new 'QueenAdreena' album in progress. Do you
feel comfortable enough in the band now to contribute to the
songwriting progress?
the words comfortable and queenadreena shouldn't be anywhere near
eachother in a sentance.... i contribute what i feel it appropriate
to...katie and crispin have that pretty much covered...often there is
no call for contribution... i might pipe up in rehearsal about
arrainging live material but mostly i keep my head down follow the
root notes don't fuck with anything and do my job. i think thats the
best way for any QA bass player to approach it.
-How does being a member of 'The Dogbones' differ from being a member
of 'QueenAdreena'?
it's very different...QA is katie and crispins baby, dogbones is mine
and crispins baby...i can do what ever the fuck i like with the
dogbones ...musically, lyrically , artistically etc.. but i wouldn't
dream of trying to fuck with queenadreena. there's a big difference
between playing bass in someone else's band and fronting and playing
guitar in your own band...i'm not saying one is better than the
other...just different, i get alot of my shit out doing both (e.g. i
can hit the bass ALOT harder than i can hit my guitar and there's
less to think/worry about so that can be really fun) ...it's just i'm
freer to express myself in the dogbones. i see myself as a guitarist
first then a bass player...
-I saw your performance in the Welsh language 'Ankst' film 'y lleill'
(and enjoyed it, by the way). Is acting something you want to do
again, or was it a one-off? How much of Nomi was in the films'
character? Also, I'm sure that I spotted Crispin in the crowd in a
gig scene! Was it him, and how did he end up in a Welsh language arts
film?
that was probably a one off... i only did it because it was Em's
film ...the guy that runs a small welsh indie label ANKSTmusic ... he
really looked after wendykurk and shot our videos... i guess he asked
me and other ex members of wendykurk and our friends to be in his
film to make it more 'real' it's a film about a struggling welsh rock
band which is exactly what we were so it wasn;t difficult to
play...also my character has a spliff in practically every
scene...which is pretty much like me. The film is quite spooky for me
to watch as it's all set where i come from with many familiar places
and faces...the 'sex scene' i did was even with my ex boyfriend..one
of the gig scenes was filmed where wendykurk used to play all the
time..(the actual scene of our own downward spiral).and the scenery
makes me miss the welsh mountains i come from.....
crispin was in a gig scene because he came up to wales to visit me
during the filming so he just ended up being filmed in the crowd... i
certainly don't consider myself an actress but thats not to say i
wouldn't do something like that again if it was lo-fi and punky...it
was quite fun.
-I know that you are trying to put 'The Dogbones' album out
independantly. How is that going, and when can we expect to see it
out?
we're not necessarily trying to do it indepentently... we're trying
to explore as many avenues as we can...we still have a few stones to
turn over.... but the material is coming along thick and fast...we
have more than enough for an album already.
-I know that you still enjoy going to gigs (Yay! Devo!). What new
bands have you seen this year that you think are worth recommending?
My favourite new acts this year (apart from 'The Dogbones')
are 'Screaming Tea Party', 'The Victorian English Gentlemens Club'
and 'Dead Kids'. Ever heard any of them?
nothing that was as cool as that devo gig thats for sure. ..i don't
really go to many gigs these days... i went to download last year and
was really depressed by the lack of anything exciting...the only
thing that mildly caught my attention was 'the zico chain' but they
may just be a good live band,,,i havn't heard their recordings
yet...so it put me off going to gigs this year, I don't really like
what seems to be going on out there right now... it seems to be
twangy thin guitar sounds...mockney cheeky chappy public school boy
rinky-dink gypo bulshit... the only band that does it for me at the
moment is 'selfish cunt' (bambi's band)...there's a band with a real
sense of danger no bullshit and totally passionate. I thoroughly
recomend them,
-Do you still keep in touch with the rest of 'Wendykurk'? What are
they up to now?
yeah i still speak to them..love them dearly. the bass player and
drummer have recently started their own two man project 'the
shadowmen' they are great.. not sure if they're giging yet but
check out their myspace www.myspace.com/theshadowmen . The other
guitarist did a band called 'mongolian dethkit' after the kurk (which
i briefly played bass for) then he moved to manchester and did a band
called 'the dethkats' He recently moved to london and currently
lives just down the street from me.. i have no idea what he'll do
next..but it's bound to be fairly bizzarre .
-Choose five words to describe yourself.
dipsy , driven , squirmy, shy, schmoo.
-Describe your ideal evening.
playing a gig...followed by - three good friends a box of marbles and
assorted random objects, a pot of glitter , some cans of spray
paint , a blank wall, an ounce of skunk , a good pinotage , a bag of
freshly picked welsh mushrooms , a pocket full of kittens, a slide
projecter..blank slides...finding things to put in the slides... ,
lots of kyuss a walk up a snowdonian mountain , a dance under the
stars, a cuddle from crispin.
-What's next for 'The Dogbones'?
more gigs.
Thanks, Nomi! You're a star! look forward to seeing you onstage next
Friday in Bolougne.
see you there... we're going to be playing a new set... new songs and
songs from 'to ride a cock horse' ... hope we dont fuck them up too
badly.
(They didn't - I did go, and they played seven new (well, not on any
previous album) songs.
Myself, Gary, Alan & Mike travelled over to Northern France via the
Channel Tunnel yesterday, and we're bloody glad we did! The 'festival
poulpaphone' was held in the middle of an industrial estate just
outside Boulogne-Sur-Mer. Two large marquees had been set up, one for
rap & hip-hop bands, and one for rock; plus another for food/beer &
merchandise. There was a large stage in each marquee, a great light
show, and great sound. Plus admission was only 5 euros per day! It
MUST have been subsidised by the local council at those prices. First
on was a French electro-jazz band called Fmr.exe(yawn), then a
bizarre Russian duo called 'Messerchups' (featuring a Betty Page
lookalikey on bass) playing what sounded like 'Shadows' covers to a
film backdrop of cheesy 50's horror films, and then a Toulouse based
technical metal band called Psykup, who weren't bad, but went on a
bit too long. Then came the reason that we had made the long journey.
QueenAdreena took to the stage to headline the 'rock' stage at about
11pm French time. Katie was wearing a modified slip plus a cardigan,
with her hair tied up (briefly); Crispin wore a satin smoking jacket
type thing; and Nomi wore a vest top with a corset over the top.
Pete, of course, doesn't dress up and just looks hard. The band were
tight, Katie seemed really happy and confident; and we got loads of
new songs. 'Lick the Itch' has now been promoted to set opener and
seems to have been modified again to have a quieter start. The 'brand
new' songs were 'Ride the airwaves'; 'Where mean the Vulture
live'; 'Naked Ruby' (previewed a couple of weeks ago as a 'Ruby
Throat' song); 'Somewhere Upstairs' & 'Bridget'. Along with 'Happy
Now' & 'Killer Tits' that is just about a full albums worth of new
material! The French crowd were very appreciative and demanded (and
got) and encore of 'suck'. Katie seemed willing to carry on and play
more, but the band were ushered off into the night. Every time that
you think that QueenAdreena have run out of steam, or become
disillusioned by Industry problems, then they just keep coming back
with even better quality material. They surely must be the most
underground and under-appreciated band in Britain. Search them out,
and learn to love them.

I for one, can't wait! So many 'new' songs!
A small room in Birmingham's historic jewellery quarter is strewn
with a disparate collection of objects. Each on their own has it's
own intrinsic interest; but drawn together they become a self-
supporting whole. I was rather overwhelmed by the exhibition, and
rather stunned by how much Katie Jane has offered of herself to
public view. It was rather like she had transferred her soul onto a
mirror and deliberately smashed it. Each exhibit was then a shard of
the mirror reflecting a tiny piece of the essence of Katie Jane. It
would be facetious to break the exhibition down into simple component
parts as they need each other for their total meaning. An old set of
scales sits in a case, covered with taxidermied butterflies - one for
each year of Katies life. Candid photographs line the walls. Genica
Pussywillow and Sleepslikewolves, the dream dolls, sit on the
windowcill. The ghost-dress hangs on a branch surrounded by written
scraps of memory. Official letters are framed, decorated with self
portraits in biro, demonstrating an amazing and unexpected talent for
drawing. An old singer sewing machine sits on a pedestal threaded
with an old scrap of cloth and brambles. Fragments of diaries and
letters hang by pegs from a washing line. Objects (nautical buoys,
keys, locks, hair) are suspended from the ceiling... A stunning
insight into the enigma that is Katie Jane Garside.
I have posted a selection of photographs from the exhibition here:
