Although I can play loads of things now because I have been playing
since I was 15 and I am now 26, metallica is the reason I picked up
a guitar in the first place. I can play almost every one of their
songs from kill them all to load as a result. Anyway, metallica,
pantera, slayer, megadeth, they use an awful lot of power chords and
almost always use JUST downstrokes for a heavier sound. They also
have a no money limit on amplifiers and such (mesa boogie. oh my, so
sexy.) which I am sure helps. :) Personally, if you want that fat
heavy sound, I use EMG pickups, (EMG-81 humbuckers to be exact, they
are active "pickups", they are the same ones metasllica, slayer and
pantera use, they are like nothing you have ever heard and they run
on a 9-volt battery.) I also run my combo amp through a BASS cab for
bass guitar instead of a guitar cab. If you do these things, you
will be a very happy guitarist my friend.
