Just joined the group and hope I can give as well as get. At this point I'm
looking for a bit of help with color matching.
I'm fixing a broken peghead on a Gothic Black Flying "V". The structural fix is
complete and I've managed to save the O. Gibson decal on the back of the
peghead (so far). The break was such that there are several places that
require extensive touchup and I haven't a clue how to match the color. I think I
have the right stuff (lacquer, thinner, Behkol, retarder, flatener, dyes,
shellac,
HVLP, etc.), but I don't know where to begin (except not on the guitar). How
does one begin the process of trying to match the color and satin finish? Is
the color coat flatened as well as the clear coat? What to do??? Some
remedial chemistry of the process would be appreciated. Also guidance on
color mixing and theory for future reference? This color retouching has to be
the most difficult part of the "art" of lutherie repair. Any guidance will be
appreciated.
