Yes, I do have a truss rod but I've never had to adjust one before.
The action has actually 'lowered' because the strings are touching
the upper frets when I play.

Sounds like too much relief in the neck. If it has a truss rod, you might give it a little tighten. Too much relief makes the area of the 5678 frets too low...
