Hello, and welcome to the April 2002 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
Please note that our print edition subscription special – especially for mailing list members – has been extended to May 15th.(All orders must be postmarked by May 15th.)So don’t be cheap – show your support by walking over to your checkbook and scribbling out a check for ten bucks. The offer is at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/suboffer_mailinglist.html.
You are receiving this e-mail because you (or someone else who is using your e-mail account, at least) signed up for this mailing list. If you feel you are receiving this e-mail in error or no longer wish to be on this mailing list, you can be removed easily by sending a blank e-mail to gwrn-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
If you're new to a yahoogroups mailing list, try checking out the GWRN area at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gwrn -- there, you can read past monthly updates. In the "Files" area, I've uploaded all the advertising rate and deadline information.I've also put all of the pertinent Renegade website links in the links area. And I have placed a few upcoming dates of interest on the calendar.
As always, thanks again for reading our monthly mailing. This monthly update ensures that, once a month, you'll always have the latest Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter information at your fingertips. And if your e-mailbox is as full as mine, you'll be glad we only send the update once a month rather than more often.
B) New Section
Computer Woes:Well, we’re back. Our GWRN computer was out of commission for a couple weeks.Nothing serious – just a power supply – but it’s an odd-shaped power supply, so it wasn’t as easy to replace as I thought it would be.Anyway, we’re back. The main ways this affects GWRN are delays: 1) This monthly update is late.2) The Country Music Industry Edition is very late.Sorry, guys.3) I’m going to be late getting started contact Industry Edition advertisers. So if you’re interested, please contact me directly.(Info is at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/ie_adrates.html.) When I get enough to cover expenses, I can focus on getting the issue out hopefully not too late.4) To those people whose discs I liked enough to review myself – those CD reviews probably won’t be ready for the Spring Country Music Industry Edition or the May Industry Edition.5) I didn’t send e-mail confirmations to as many people whose CDs arrived for review.Of course, I don’t always get time to do that anyway.6) The Spring Online Edition isn’t laid out.
Thanks for your patience. We continue to focus on what we do well, which is to get unsigned and indie bands’ CDs reviewed and into the
Promotion Idea:Would your fans be interested in reading Geoff Wilbur’s Renegade Newsletter? We can put together a web page for you (that will look similar to http://www.geoffwilbur.com/renegade/suboffer_mailinglist.html but with your band’s name on it), and we’ll also send you a Word file with a one-page form you can print out.(If you reduce the form we send you to 50% at Kinko’s, you’ll be able to fit 4 on a page.)Then, you can direct your fans to the web page and hand out the forms at shows and other events.(Most effectively, you can collect cash from your fans at the show and send the forms and a check to me through the mail – you know how people can be interested at the moment, but by the next morning, they won’t fill out the form and send the check.)If you have been reviewed or interviewed in a previous issue and if we still have copies of that issue in our files here, we will offer that issue as your fans’ “bonus.”Otherwise, we’ll do something similar to the “mailing list” offer I referred you to as a sample.
What do you get in exchange?Well… we’ll offer you 50% ad credit – meaning, for every $10 subscription, we’ll give you $5 toward advertising in GWRN.You can find ad rates for the Industry Edition at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/ie_adrates.html and for the Country Music Industry Edition at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/cmie_adrates.html. Please zip me an e-mail if you’re interested, and we’ll get you up and rolling.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update. As always, keep in touch.

It's been a while since the last online issue -- first the Spring issue came out in the Summer last year, then the Fall issue was cancelled because the deadlines fell too close to mid-September -- but we're online with a new mega-issue now, featuring interviews with Spineshank, Figure of Speech, Grade, Megadeth, Ice Age, Shadow Gallery, and Sloppy Meateaters, plus more reviews than I care to count right now. You can go to the issue directly at the Winter issue index -- http://membrane.com/renegade/winter02/ -- or you can just go to the Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter home page (http://membrane.com/renegade) and click on "Winter 2002."
Of course, we fund our operations from our print editions, so I'd like to ask you all to consider supporting our print editions. And to that end, for a limited time, I've put together a special. If you sign up for at least a year of one edition of Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter (for just $10), I'll send you a free copy of the “early” back issue of your choice – choose from 1) the first Industry Edition (the 4-page August 1994 issue featuring an interview with Bleeding Hearts), 2) the second Country Music Industry Edition (the 8-page Summer 1997 issue featuring interviews with Ironhorse, Solid Ground, Karen Nash, and the Back Alley Boys), or 3) the very first Geoff Wilbur’s Renegade Newsletter ever (the 6-page July 1993 Grand Rapids Edition, from when we published “street” editions, featuring interviews with Ken Mari of The Revolution [later to become Soul Shock Remedy] and Bakers Pink). The special order form is at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/suboffer_mailinglist.html. But to get this special deal, your order form must be postmarked by February 15th!
Anyway, thanks for your attention. We'll be back with our regular monthly update in a couple weeks or so. And don't forget -- we're always accepting material for review.

Hello, and welcome to the January 2002 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.

As you know, the Spring Online Edition went up around the beginning of summer, so we planned to have a Fall issue online in September. With a nod to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to bother my writers for their articles, and my mind was elsewhere, as well, so I didn’t focus on the Renegade for a month or two, so we didn’t publish a Fall Online Edition.(We also didn’t publish a Fall Country Music Industry Edition.)As a result, we have a huge issue set for the Winter Online Edition.I’m proofreading right now; then I’ll get them to our web people, and hopefully they’ll be up early this year.
Also, the Winter Country Music Industry Edition is awaiting one final outside contribution and should be going to the printer this weekend and into the mail the following weekend.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.
Interviews with Julie Dunlap and Steve Haggard appear in the Winter Country Music Industry Edition. This issue will be mailed in about 10 days, so if you’re a subscriber, watch your mailboxes… and if you aren’t a subscriber, quit being so cheap, and shell out the ten bucks a year – there’s a subscription form online at http://membrane.com/renegade/spring01/printsub.html.
Interviews with Spineshank, Ice Age, Megadeth, Grade, and Shadow Gallery have been completed for the Fall/Winter Online Edition. Also, a full-length version of the Figure of Speech interview will appear in the Online Edition.

Hello, and welcome to the October/November 2001 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
You are receiving this e-mail because you (or someone else who is using your e-mail account, at least) signed up for this mailing list.If you feel you are receiving this e-mail in error or no longer wish to be on this mailing list, you can be removed easily by sending a blank e-mail to gwrn-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
1) No, there wasn’t an October monthly update.Like many Americans, I was a bit distracted for a few weeks.
2) I’m trying to streamline the monthly mailer.I’m putting many of the more repetitive sections online and online showing the links in the mailed issue to minimize unnecessary information in the mailed version. If you do, for some reason, miss the monthly mailer, you can find it online at http://www.geoffwilbur.com/monthly_update.html.
3) The Fall Country Music Industry Edition advertising deadlines fell in mid-September.There had been no response to my first e-mail call to advertisers, so the next step was to call regular advertisers by telephone. However, after the attacks against America, it felt as if the time was wrong to be calling to ask for music publication advertising dollars. In addition, the priorities of the members of the all-volunteer Geoff Wilbur’s Renegade Newsletter staff, including its publisher, were elsewhere for at least a couple weeks. As a result, there will be no Fall issue of the Country Music Industry Edition. Our one pre-paid classified advertiser will have his ad extended by an additional issue, and our subscribers will have their expiration dates extended to reflect that there was no Fall issue.I hope you all understand the reasons for this – during difficult times, some things simply take a back seat.We will be back with a complete Winter 2001/02 Country Music Industry Edition.Advertising deadline is December 8 – please contact me if you’re interested in an ad and make things a little easier.Go to http://www.geoffwilbur.com/cmie_adrates.html for detailed Country Music Industry Edition advertising information. Thanks!
4) The many recent distractions also made my residential move a little more difficult and time consuming.(No, the contact info for Geoff Wilbur’s Renegade Newsletter has not changed. We still use the same mailbox store, and it was a local move, so the phone number didn’t change.)In fact, only in the last week have most of the boxes with the Renegade Newsletter items been unpacked. So… the advertising deadline for the November-January Industry Edition (covering all styles other than country) has been bumped back to November 16, with an expected mailing date of early December.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.

Hello, and welcome to the September 2001 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
3) Quick question -- would it make it easier for you if we began accepting PayPal payments (which can be made from a credit card via PayPal) for subscriptions and advertising over the Internet? I'm looking into it and would like a little feedback. Thanks!

* sections with new information since the last monthly update
If you're new to a yahoogroups mailing list, try checking out the GWRN area at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gwrn -- there, you can read past monthly updates. In the "Files" area, I've uploaded all the Advertising rate and deadline information. I've also put all the pertinent Renegade website links in the links area. And I have placed a few upcoming dates of interest on the calendar.
As always, thanks again for reading our monthly mailing. This monthly update ensures that, once a month, you'll always have the latest Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter information at your fingertips. And if your e-mailbox is as full as mine, you'll be glad we only send the update once a month rather than more often.
b) New Stuff
As some of you may know, our business address and phone number will remain the same, but I'll be moving next month, so (with the accompanying turmoil) the Fall Country Music Industry Edition can be expected to be a 2-3 late (hopefully no more). For one thing, packing means I haven't been in touch with our usual advertisers yet. Thanks for your patience. Tentatively, the new advertising deadline is September 29.
Also, the August-October Industry Edition is at the printer. You should find copies in your mailboxes in a couple weeks.
And, as mentioned above, the Spring Online Edition is finally online. We plan to get the Summer/Fall issue to our web guys shortly after the Fall Country Music Industry Edition is completed.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.
Fall 2001 Country Music Industry Edition -- September 29, 2001 November 2001 Industry Edition -- October 31, 2001 Winter 2001/02 Country Music Industry Edition -- December 8, 2001
Advertising rates are as low as $75 (1/4 page) for the Industry Edition and $60 (1/4 page) for the Country Music Industry Edition. Send an e-mail to geoff@... with your e-mail and/or phone number if you want to be contacted with more information about advertising in any of these upcoming issues.
Whenever a Renegade writer is firmly scheduled to attend at a local live show or other event and invites you to say hello (and/or personally deliver a press kit if you'd like), you'll read about it in this section.
Several Renegade writers are musicians. You may wish to attend a writer's gig and use it as an opportunity to network with that writer.
Check your local listings for upcoming shows by Renegade writers and their bands; they are Pamela West, Chain Reaction (Eric Harabadian), Divinesnapperkings (Kevin Hurrell), Saje (Steven Haidaichuk), SOS (MikeSOS), Jane Wallace (Vic Gemmingen), Mike Farley, Flint Michigan (Dennis Katsanis), Sin Embargo (Kyle Kipp), Fulbone (Ryan Langhurst), and Mingo (Domingo Guyton).

Also, please feel free to use the extensive bookmarks (including many music and music industry ones) compiled by the GWRN publisher. You can find those online at http://www.blink.com/members/gwilbur. Maybe I've found some sites that could be helpful to you.
Hopefully, some of you checked out our MP3 stations. As you know (if you read past updates), we are now putting together a radio station for each specific industry edition, featuring one song for each band covered in each issue, including advertisers. (Of course, this is limited to bands with songs available via MP3.com.) When that coverage is a review or a small news item, that text is included, too. But don't take my word for it -- see for yourself:
I hope you enjoy them -- as I noted before, I hope to make MP3 radio stations a regular feature for the industry editions, assuming MP3.com continues to allow its users to create stations.

Part B: Special Text This Month -- How Reviews Happen/Time Frames
To those of you thinking about e-mailing me to ask "when will my review be running?", please don't. I have a day job and publish GWRN in the evenings and on weekends, and already spend far too much of the limited time I can devote to the publication answering such inquiries. I'd like to respond to everyone's e-mail, but if I responded to them all, I'd never have any time to actually publish the Renegade, so I often pass over the "when will the review run?" e-mails in favor of other, more substantive e-mails.
Here's the scoop: We always intend to review all CDs sent our way -- and do review almost all CDs with only a few exceptions (resulting from writer turnover, reviews deemed unfit for publication, and/or the occasional misplaced or lost-in-the-mail CD). Typically, reviews run 2-8 months after receipt of an album -- the range is a result of writing turnarounds and the fact that there's limited space (which can vary dramatically from issue to issue, depending on ad revenue) and, when a review gets bumped to the next issue, that "next" quarterly issue is 3 months away.
You might wonder, why can't I tell you just where your review is in the supply chain? For one thing, on our internal records the CDs are listed by writer, not by band, so I'd have to page through all my writers outstanding CDs to find yours. So why do I keep the records this way? Because it makes it easier for me to tell my writers what CD reviews I'm still expecting from them. It's more efficient for publishing the magazine, even if it makes it difficult-to-impossible to respond easily to inquiries from individual bands or publicists. Besides, even quick answers to several e-mails each week take time... time I need to spend publishing the magazine and talking to those of you who want to discuss advertising and promotional activities that'll keep us around to help get the word out within the music industry (or, if you're a signed band, to the public via the website) about your (and other bands') recordings for years to come.
So, while I'd love to answer everyone's e-mail about anything you want to know, I've tried it before, and the result is that it becomes impossible to find time to produce the magazine under those circumstances.
I've gotten a lot of inquiries about our publishing process, so I thought you might like that little bit of insight.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.

1) PUBLISHER'S NOTE (just the standard every-month note this time)
If you're new to a yahoogroups mailing list, try checking out the GWRN area at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gwrn -- there, you can read past monthly updates.
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.
Interviews with Hermann Lammers Meyer, Elvis Carden, and Judy Welden appeared in the Spring Country Music Industry Edition.
Interviews with Peter Cor, Zak Rizvi, Brian Perry, The Fusionauts, Gerald Bair, and Davey Pattison have been completed for the May Industry Edition (space permitting -- if any do not fit in the May issue, they will run in August, but it appears as if all will run in the May issue).
Interviews with Spineshank and Ice Age have been completed for the Summer Online Edition. (Yes, I know, the Spring Edition isn't even up yet -- I'll let you know in an e-mail update when I've got it up.)
Summer 2001 Country Music Industry Edition -- June 8, 2001 August 2001 Industry Edition -- July 31, 2001
Advertising rates are as low as $75 (1/4 page) for the Industry Edition and $60 (1/4 page) for the Country Music Industry Edition. Full advertising rate information is available at http://www.geoffwilbur.com -- click on Industry Edition or Country Music Industry Edition ad rates link, depending on your interest.
The GWRN website at http://membrane.com/renegade contains articles from the Street Edition of Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, plus additional reviews for which there was not enough space in the print edition.
The December 2000 Street Edition has been placed online as Winter 2000/2001. (As a special bonus, this online issue also includes articles from the November 2000 Industry Edition.) You can reach it by clicking on the GWRN home page at http://membrane.com/renegade, or you can go directly to the Winter issue at http://membrane.com/renegade/win2001/index.html.
Also, please feel free to use the extensive bookmarks (including many music and music industry ones) compiled by the GWRN publisher. You can find those online at http://www.blink.com/members/gwilbur. Maybe I've found some sites that could be helpful to you -- and I'm adding more folders of bookmarks all the time as I clean up my lists.
***
Also, thanks to those who've already checked out our stations, including those who've happened to notice our single-edition stations were online. Their highest charting positions (that I've noticed) so far have been:
Classical Station: Print Media Chart -- #2 (12/16) Music Publications Chart -- #45 (1/23) Classical Chart -- #95 (1/23)
Indie Rock Station: Print Media Chart -- #4 (12/24) Music Publications Chart -- #59 (1/23)
November 2000 Industry Edition: Print Media Chart -- #8 (3/11) Music Publications Chart -- #39 (3/11) Music Reviews Chart -- #127 (3/11)
Winter 2000/01 Country Music Industry Edition: Print Media Chart -- #3 (1/30) Music Publications Chart -- #41 (1/30) Country Chart -- #62 (3/8)
February 2001 Industry Edition: Print Media Chart -- #7 (3/14) Music Publications Chart -- #37 (3/14) Music Reviews Chart -- #143 (3/12)

b) new business portion of note
We're still running 2-3 weeks late with the printing schedule after the delays (resulting partially from my travels in February), but we're catching up, and the May issue should be on time. Expect the Spring Country Music Industry Edition to hit the mail in mid-April.
The March 2001 Street Edition -- the final Street Edition -- went into the mail this weekend. As noted last month, the Industry Edition and Country Music Industry Edition will continue to be printed as scheduled, and the signed bands we covered in the Street Edition will continue to be covered in the Online Edition. Again as noted last month, our web people have told us the Renegade web pages get 10,000 to 20,000 hits per day, so it'll still be a great place for our signed bands to get reviewed and interviewed -- almost all of the impact of the street edition was already from the online version anyway.
Finally, remember, you can still subscribe to the Industry Edition and Country Music Industry Edition at the old rates of $6/year for each edition. If you need a subscription form, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gwrn and click on the March 5th message entitled "As promised in Saturday's Monthly Update. You MUST SUBSCRIBE BY MAY 1, 2001 to get this special rate!
Anyway, thanks again for reading your monthly update.
Interviews with blue number nine, DePoet & the Monkey, and the Baghdaddios appeared in the February-April Industry Edition. (Longer versions of the blue number nine and Baghdaddios interviews will appear in the Spring Online Edition when its up.)
Interviews with Sid Bernstein, Glenn Hughes, and Robert (Brad) Bradley, news items about Keb' Mo', the Bellamy Brothers and Ty Herndon, and Sticky Fingaz, and a Tesla concert review appeared in the March Street Edition (and will appear in the Spring Online Edition when it's up).
Interviews with Hermann Lammers Meyer, Elvis Carden, and Judy Welden have been completed for the Spring Country Music Industry Edition.
Interviews with Peter Cor, Zak Rizvi, Brian Perry, The Fusionauts, and Gerald Bair have been completed for the May Industry Edition (space permitting -- if any do not fit in the May issue, they will run in August or online).

Hey there, all -- as promised in the monthly update, here's a subscription
form allowing GWRN mailing list subscribers to subscribe to the print
editions of the Renegade at their current rates through May 1st -- when the
subscription rate goes up to $10/yr. for one edition and $18/yr. for both
(with discounts for multiple-year purchases, though still not down to our
current $6/yr. levels). As you know, I almost never send additional e-mails
beyond the monthly update (in fact, this is the first time), even though I
say when you sign up I might do it 5-10 times a year. Anyway, for those of
you who have trouble with attachments, below is a really simple version of
the subscription form. I'll also try to attach it as an html file, which I
believe yahoogroups will allow me to do. The attachment is less than 10 kb,
so it shouldn't tie up anyone's dial-up Internet connection. (I read the
web via a cable modem, but I still read my e-mail on my old computer via
dial-up, so I'm sensitive to that.) Anyway, as always, thanks for reading,
and we'll be back in touch next month with our monthly update.
Cheers!

Hello, and welcome to the March 2001 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
And if your e-mailbox is as full as mine, you'll be glad we only send the update once a month rather than more often.
b) new business portion of note
Please note that the Febraury-April Industry Edition is nearing completion and will be in the mail soon. (Since some items arrived late, I was unable to complete production prior to my trip to Bulgaria last month.)
Other changes are also in the works. First, we noticed that all our Street Edition subscribers were also subscribers to one or both of our Industry Editions. So we decided that, to expedite the conversion of the Street Edition to online format, we will discontinue the Street Edition and only place those articles directly online. Our Street Edition subscribers will receive one more Street Edition (March 2001), then the remaining issues on their subscription will be added to extend their Industry and Country Music Industry Edition subscriptions. Our web people told us the Renegade web pages get 10,000 to 20,000 hits per day, so it'll still be a great place for our signed bands to get reviewed and interviewed -- almost all of the impact of the street edition was already from the online edition. In any event, this change will allow us to get the website up quicker and focus more attention on the Industry Editions.
Also, our subscription rates will be increasing. The U.S. subscription rates are currently $6.00 per year per edition. Rates will be increasing to $10.00 for one edition for one year with discounts for purchasing multiple years and/or both editions. Those of you on this mailing list will be given an opportunity to subscribe at the current rates if you subscribe by May 1st -- following soon will be an e-mail containing a printable subscription form with your offer. (Current subscribers will receive an opportunity via regular mail, as well, to extend their subscriptions at the current rate.)
Thanks again for reading your monthly update. With the many changes and additions (like our MP3 stations) and other promotional efforts, we hope to continually make the Renegade more useful to our readers and successful for all of our supporters.
Interviews with blue number nine, DePoet & the Monkey, and the Baghdaddios will be included in the February-April Industry Edition.
An interview with Hermann Lammers Meyer has been completed for the Spring Country Music Industry Edition.
An interview with Sid Bernstein and a Tesla concert review have been completed for the March Street Edition (and Spring Online Edition).
Interviews with Peter Cor, Zak Rizvi, Brian Perry, The Fusionauts, and Gerald Bair have been completed for the May Industry Edition (space permitting -- if any do not fit in the May issue, they will run in August or online).
Spring 2001 Country Music Industry Edition -- March 22, 2000 May 2001 Industry Edition -- April 30, 2001
Advertising rates are as low as $50 (1/9 page) for the Industry Edition, $75 (1/4 page) for the Street Edition, and $60 (1/4 page) for the Country Music Industry Edition.
Send an e-mail to geoff@... with your e-mail and/or phone number if you want to be contacted with more information about advertising in any of these upcoming issues.

Hello, and welcome to the January/February 2001 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. (We're killing 2 birds -- er, months -- with one stone here.) The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
You are receiving this e-mail because you (or someone else who is using your e-mail account, at least) signed up for this mailing list. If you feel you are receiving this e-mail in error or no longer wish to be on this mailing list, you can be removed easily by sending a blank e-mail to gwrn-unsubscribe@egroups.com.
If you're new to an egroups mailing list, try checking out the GWRN area at http://www.eGroups.com/group/gwrn/info.html. There, you can read past monthly updates.
Please note that the November-January Industry Edition and the Winter Country Music Industry Edition have gone out in the mail. The December-February Street Edition will be out in the next week. Because the Industry Edition was a special subscriber-only one, there weren't any tear sheets sent out, but as a bonus, this edition will be placed online along with the Dec.-Feb. Street Edition in a few weeks when the Winter 2000/2001 online edition is put up. Please be a little patient, and then you'll be able to print your reviews off the website. (We have exactly ZERO extra copies of the Industry Edition, so there really isn't one I can send your way -- we WERE, at least, able to send issues to the three musicians/bands featured in the issue.)
The Winter Country Music Industry Edition featured an interview with Brandi Ward. The Nov.-Jan. Industry Edition included interviews with Giant Sequoia, Vicki Logan, and He Fashioned Love.
Coverage of Undercurrents 2000 and the Northampton Music Festival will be included in the Dec.-Feb. Street Edition. Interviews with blue number nine and DePoet & the Monkey have been completed for the February Industry Edition. And an interview with Hermann Lammers Meyer has been completed for the Spring Country Music Industry Edition.
February 2001 Industry Edition -- January 31, 2001 March 2001 Street Edition -- February 16, 2000 Spring 2001 Country Music Industry Edition -- March 22, 2000
Check your local listings for upcoming shows by Renegade writers and their bands; they are Pamela West, Chain Reaction (Eric Harabadian), Divinesnapperkings (Kevin Hurrell), Saje (Steven Haidaichuk), SOS (MikeSOS), Jane Wallace (Vic Gemmingen) and Mike Farley.
The GWRN website at http://membrane.com/renegade contains articles from the Street Edition of Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, plus additional reviews for which there was not enough space in the print edition.
Also, we have created MP3 radio stations featuring some of our favorite artists and past featured artists. You can check out some of the publisher's favorite classical music at http://www.mp3.com/stations/gwrnclassical and you can check out some music from bands covered in past Industry Editions at http://www.mp3.com/stations/gwrnindierock. Please check out this fine music watch this space for future stations featuring bands covered in specific issues of GWRN. I'd like to thank you for your use of the radio stations to date -- on the "Print Media" charts, the classical station has charted as high as #2 and the indie rock station has charted as high as #4.
7) RENEGADE WRITERS' E-MAIL ADDRESSES -- INVITE A WRITER TO A SHOW
Following is a city-by-city list (alphabetized by state, then city) of Renegade writers with e-mail addresses. If your band (or a band you represent) is performing near one of our writers, please contact that writer directly to invite him/her out to the show. Each writer has the authority to decide to cover a show without receiving prior permission from the publisher. Please keep in mind that all of our writers have other jobs. Depending on their other commitments, some are more likely than others to be able to cover shows, though they'll all appreciate the opportunity. NOTE: a "*" following the e-mail address denotes that the address has changed since the last monthly update.
CITY WRITER (E-MAIL ADDRESS) Los Angeles, CA Dan MacIntosh (ibdanmac@...)
San Francisco/Oakland, CA Dan Killoran (DansTunes@...)
We accept CDs and cassettes of all musical styles for review. Please send one or two copies to the address in Item 6 above.
We're always looking for more writers. Writing positions at GWRN are unpaid, though the perks are great. If you or a writer you know would like to cover your local music scene for Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, please direct an inquiry to Geoff Wilbur at geoff@....
Thanks again for reading yet another monthly update. As the months pass, watch for improvements and additions. Feel free to make suggestions. And hey, go to http://membrane.com/renegade/fall00/printsub.html, print out the form, and sign up to get yourself a subscription to your favorite edition. (Six bucks a year -- a pretty easy way to show your support!)
Hello, and welcome to the December 2000 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter.
Hello friends, readers, musicians, and fellow industry folks!
Not much is new here at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, so rather than repeat most of the newsletter, as usual, I'll just point out what's new -- not much, but all interesting. (Besides, this update is pretty late this month -- I'll include all the sections in a full monthly update in early January.)
Or, as always, you can go to the GWRN homepage at http://membrane.com/renegade and click on the Summer/Fall 2000 link.
2) We've discovered MP3 Radio Stations. In the future, we'll put together stations for individual editions of Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, allowing readers to sample songs from any of the bands reviewed who also have songs on the MP3 site. For now, we have two test station. One contains several of my wife's and my favorite classical MP3s. (Yes, though we don't review much classical music in the Renegade, I do enjoy it.) The other station contains MP3s of several bands/musicians we've reviewed in our Industry Editions over the years. And, as I said, this is just the beginning. Check out our MP3 radio stations at:
3) I also continue to update the bookmarks I've published online via Blink. You can find links to websites about music and a variety of other subjects at: http://www.blink.com/members/gwilbur
4) Our egroups site: Be sure to go to http://www.eGroups.com/group/gwrn/info.html sometime to check out more info about the Renegade. In the "Links" section you'll find a link to our subscription form, and in the "Files" section you'll find our advertising rates and deadlines. (The forms haven't been updated for 2001 yet, but the dates will be the same -- just change the year from 2000 to 2001.)
Thanks for your support -- we'll be back again in January with a full update, but I figure there's no need to repeat all that information every month. I hope you're all enjoying the holiday season, and I look forward to your continued support in 2001... which reminds me -- most of you aren't paid subscribers to the Renegade. If you can spare six bucks to subscribe to the edition of your choice (4 issues/year), please go to http://membrane.com/renegade/fall00/printsub.html and print out a subscription form. Hey -- subscribe your friends, too, and call it a Christmas gift. (There -- one last plug for the year 2000.)

TIME SAVER NOTICE: The only new items in this month's monthly update are the addition of February's advertising deadline and the addition of contact information for a new New Jersey writer -- not one of our more interesting monthly updates, so if you read it every month, just check out the new info, and save yourself some time.

Subscribers received their issues as they came off the presses, but the review tear sheets are delayed as I've been devoting time to getting the other issues out. Thanks for your patience.

Of note this time is that the update (and the August issue of the publication) are a bit late. Of course, since I've been out of town for my wedding and honeymoon, that should be explanation enough. As things got hectic, the Industry Edition was pushed back (call it a "wedding delay") about 3 weeks. Among other things, I was too busy with wedding plans to make advertising calls -- there's still some space available, and the new advertising deadline for the August Industry Edition is August 23rd. Subscribers, watch for the issue in your mailbox in early September. The November issue will be back on schedule, as usual. (One of the advantages of being a family of quarterlies is that a delay like this doesn't mess up future printing schedules.)
On a personal note... I want to invite everyone to use my bookmarks at http://www.blink.com/members/gwilbur -- there are travel bookmarks, some various web-related ones, shopping ones, and a bands and musicians folder, too. (If your band isn't in there, let me know, and I'll add your URL.) I haven't added music biz bookmarks yet, along with several other bookmark folders I'm cleaning up (and checking for bad links) before I make them public, but I'll add more as time permits, and I'll try to make sure all my loyal readers' links are included when the appropriate categories are added.
Interviews with Jackalope Junction, Jett Williams, and Jimmie James ran in the Summer 2000 Country Music Industry Edition, which will be heading out in the mail within the week.
Interviews with the Krinkles and Anne Heaton have been completed and will run in the August 2000 Industry Edition. Also completed for the August 2000 Industry Edition is coverage from this year's EAT'M music conference.

We accept CDs and cassettes of all musical styles for review. Please send one or two copies to the address in Item 6 above.

1A) SPECIAL: HOW GEOFF WILBUR'S RENEGADE NEWSLETTER IS PRODUCED (or WHY
DON'T YOU KNOW WHEN MY REVIEW WILL RUN?)
I thought I'd give everyone a little insight into the publishing process
here at the Renegade. Essentially, it all starts with the receipt of
CDs from bands and record labels. These CDs are sorted according to
writers' musical tastes and writing workloads. Every few weeks,
Renegade writers are sent packages containing CDs for them to review.
They are required to review all the CDs they receive. As the reviews
are written, they are sent back to the Renegade offices and laid out
into the appropriate editions -- Industry, Country Music Industry, or
Street.
Now, here's the question you all like to ask -- when will my review
run? Well, about 75% of our writers' articles and 90% of all
advertising arrive at the Renegade office within the last 2 weeks before
deadline. Though early arrivals get preferential treatment, that has
had only a small effect on this phenomenon. The importance of this is
that, with all the advertising arriving late, we never know exactly how
many pages we will be able to print. Therefore, we need to prepare
enough articles for the largest possible issue. If the advertising
doesn't arrive, reviews and interviews are cut to fit the space. The
articles that are cut are typically given preferential treatment in the
following quarterly issue (or, if the amount of material arriving each
quarter would result in an increasing backlog, they run online but not
in print).
Needless to say, the final two weeks before deadline are hectic, and we
aren't able to take stock of which reviews haven't arrived (and bug the
respective writers to get them in) until after the dust settles. So if
a review doesn't arrive from a writer in time or isn't Renegade quality,
it may not appear in the edition we expect. (These are volunteer
writers with other day jobs and families, so things do come up in their
lives that keep them from completing their articles by the deadline
sometimes -- not often, but sometimes.) Also, with the flurry of
editing at the deadline, the final cuts are made so the text will fit
the exact space available, so the final editing always includes the
elimination of reviews that we would have expected to run.
Writers rarely leave the staff without completing their review
assignments, but that happens sometimes, and it is the cause of most
reviews that don't run. Because of our website, we are able to ensure
that all articles turned in by our staff will run... at least online, if
not in print.
Anyway, that's the life cycle of an issue of the Renegade, including the
hectic last couple of weeks. And that's why we never know, until the
issue heads off to the printer, which articles will appear in each
issue. I'm sure those of you who have worked on publications over the
years understand exactly what I'm talking about. And hopefully this is
a little insight into the life of a publisher for those of you without
direct experience as a publisher.
--------------------------------------------------------------
2) RECENT AND UPCOMING INTERVIEWS
The May 2000 Industry Edition, which hits the streets this month,
includes interviews with Purrr, That One Guy, The Limit, 13 O'Clock, abd
Sandra Phillips.
An interview with Mak Wolven has been completed for the June 2000 Street
Edition.
Interviews with the Krinkles and 3LOW have also been completed. They
will run in an upcoming, yet-to-be-determined Street, Industry, or
Online Edition. (If the May Industry Edition had been 12 pages instead
of 8, you would've seen both of these interviews in that issue.)

3) UPCOMING DEADLINES

MARCH 2000 MONTHLY UPDATE
Hello, and welcome to the March 2000 Geoff Wilbur's Renegade
Newsletter Update. The purpose of this monthly e-mail is to keep
you informed about the goings-on at Geoff Wilbur's Renegade
Newsletter.
You are receiving this e-mail because you (or someone else who is
using your e-mail account, at least) signed up for this mailing
list. If you feel you are receiving this e-mail in error or no
longer wish to be on this mailing list, you can be removed easily
by sending a blank e-mail to gwrn-unsubscribe@egroups.com.

7) RENEGADE WRITERS' E-MAIL ADDRESSES -- INVITE A WRITER TO A

8) MISCELLANEOUS OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST
--------------------------------------------------------------
1) PUBLISHER'S NOTE
Hello again! Since I'm still relatively new at this monthly
update thing, please feel free to make suggestions about items
you'd like to see included in our monthly updates. (Actually,
even after I've been doing this for a while, please feel free to
make suggestions.)
If you're new to an egroups mailing list, try checking out the
main website at http://www.egroups.com. Once you log in, if you
click on the "my space" button, you can see the egroups mailing
lists you've signed up for. If you click on Geoff Wilbur's
Renegade Newsletter, it will take you to the GWRN area. There,
you can read past monthly updates. In the "Vault" area, I've
uploaded all the Advertising rate and deadline information. I've
also put all the pertinent Renegade website links in the links
area. And I have placed a few upcoming dates of interest on the
calendar. (You may also be able to go directly to the GWRN area
by clicking on http://www.eGroups.com/group/gwrn/info.html.)
Thanks again for subscribing to this mailing list. This list has
made it a lot easier to keep you, our readers and supporters,
up-to-date on what's new at the Renegade. Those of you who
signed up for the monthly update this month may enjoy reading the
entire update. For the rest of you, you may wish to direct your
attention to a specific section of interest -- to the most
recent, updated list of writers' e-mail addresses if you're
playing out and want to invite someone to a show, or to the list
of upcoming interviews to see what's on the horizon. Or perhaps
you wish to note the upcoming deadlines if you're an interested
advertiser. In any case, this monthly update ensures that, once
a month, you'll always have the latest Renegade information at
your fingertips. And if your e-mailbox is as full as mine,
you'll be glad we only send the update once a month rather than
more often.
I hope your February was a good one and that March will be even
better.
Cheers!
