Hello friends,

It's hard to believe August is almost here. We've got some exciting gigs coming up including a new venue in the hometown -- check out the Sam Miltich Trio at the 17th Street Grill at Timberlake Lodge on August 18.

When San Francisco gypsy jazz guitarist Jason Vanderford decided to come to the Miltich farm for a little vacation, I booked us a whirlwind tour of northern Minnesota. Check out the Clearwater Hot Club over Labor Day weekend in Duluth, Grand Rapids, and Bovey! We'll unchain him from his guitar during the day and let him get out fishing too.

Here's the schedule for August and September. Don't forget to check the calendar at www.sammiltich.com for updates, new additions, and future performances.

Fall is in the air... my favorite season! In between a trip to Manitoba in search of waterfowl, heading out in the boat for some fishing, and walking for grouse in northeastern Itasca County I'll be doing a lot of playing.

There's something for everyone this month -- and if you don't live in northern Minnesota, you're going to wish you did! The Clearwater Hot Club will be making the rounds over Labor Day weekend in Grand Rapids, Duluth, and Bovey. The Miltich and LaPlant families are coming together for a hoedown of fiddle tunes for the Bigfork Valley Foundation fundraiser. And in early October, Peter Ostroushko is joining me in Grand Rapids for a pair of concerts benefiting MacRostie Art Center.

Read on for the details...

Great news for anyone longing to learn to play Gypsy swing or to deeply
understand and play it much better. Yaakov Hoter of Swing de Gitanes has made a
series of in-depth, understandable and affordable lessons available on line.
His straightforward explanations, the logical way one lesson builds on another
and the ability to review the accompanying comprehensive pdf file make this
collection a truly revolutionary breakthrough in the field of music education.
I'm finally on my way to becoming a real musician.

Subject: High Profile Gypsy Jazz Band in SF Bay area and LA Sept.28-Oct.9 Open for Jams
romaswing12
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

I co-manage a high profile gypsy jazz band from Canada that has members from
Romania and Canada. We are touring Whidbey Island, SF, and LA areas Oct.25 -
Oct.6 and will be in SF Sept. 28. We will be playing at the Whidbey Island and
SF Djangofests. We are open for a jam, which might possibly happen in Berkeley
on Sept.29. Other dates are Oct. 1 all day and Oct. 2 in the evening. Below is a
bit about us along with websites and our schedule. Let me know if you are
interested and/or you could come to our shows or simply just meet.

Lache Cercel and his Roma Swing Ensemble represent the latest chapter in
animportant movement in Canadian World Music " elite musicians from around the
world who settle in Canada and create music that incorporates their own
traditions with influences they find surrounding them here.

Before leaving his homeland, Lache Cercel was one of Romania’s premier
musicians. From a musical family, he trained at the Academy of Arts in
Bucharest, became a soloist with the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra and
in 1986 was awarded the “Artist of the People” Citation by the Romanian
government.

Lache Cercel collaborates with musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Among them are renowned Egyptian percussionist Adel Awad, noted Vancouver jazz
vocalist Laura Crema and Latin music virtuoso Sal Ferreras. Cercel’s music is
firmly rooted in Roma tradition, styled with Doina Klezmer, Middle Eastern and
European sounds, and held together with jazz improvisation. He calls his fusion
Roma Jazz or Roma Swing. In the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephen
Grappelli, Cercel lays classical and improvisational jazz alongside traditional
renderings, which makes for a phenomenal sound.

During this tour Lache Cercel will feature the following musicians:

Don Ogilvie, guitarist, musical director "Long-time musical partner of Lache
Cercel, Don brings his extensive jazz and classical experience to help create
the explosive mixture Lache and Don call Roma Swing.

Stephen Nikleva, a veteran guitarist, who has toured the world with
everyone from pop star Sarah McLachlan to Rockabilly great Ray Condo, brings his
diverse guitar stylings to Lache's creations.

Sam Shoichet, on bass and vocals adds the necessary solid foundation
to the Ensemble with his bombastic slap bass and driving rhythm while creating
greater depth and dimension with his soulful, playful solos.

"Polished is also the word for Lache Cercel ... the Romanian violinist turned
out an ... impeccable, even flashy, program of Romani jazz"- Alexander Varty,
The Georgia Straight, Vancouver BC

New Orleans artist Tony Green is well-known for his murals around the city. Many New Orleanians know his Rock-N-Bowl mural of 1950s life well but other examples can be seen at the Louisiana State Museum's Jazz Collection, Ralph's on the Park and Isidore Newman School. While Green works in numerous mediums and all sizes, he has always loved murals because "the sheer size lends itself well to storytelling." From time to time, the artist has painted large canvases but much of his work the last few years has been small so that he could easily carry it between his studios in New Orleans and Venice, Italy. Recently though he has returned to what he most enjoys. The paintings featured in Big Time are large scale canvases that are almost portable murals.

Green was born in Naples, Italy in 1954. His family soon moved to the United States, settling in Louisiana on New Orleans' West Bank where Green spent his childhood. Green began his studies in Washington, D.C. at the Corcoran School of Art. For the next few years, he continued to travel and study all over the world, leaving his home in New Orleans and planting the seeds of his gypsy lifestyle. In 1982 Green returned to his native Italy to paint, establishing an annual tradition that has continued up until today. Green spends each summer in the city of Venice, capturing on canvas the romance of the city, its people and its historic canals. The artist also has absorbed, through his European travels, a great appreciation of past masters. His chief sources of artistic inspiration are DiegoVelasquez (1599-1660), John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923).

My friends (especially my guitar friends who ship guitars): Do not use UPS
anymore. I shipped a guitar I was donating to a raffle Shepp was setting up in
South Jersey. UPS crushed it. It was an Aria Grand Bouche in perfect shape but
for a slight flaw in the finish. They crushed it. It was insured for it's value
and they are denying the claim. They're listing several reasons, all of which
are just not right. I've shipped and received many guitars without any problems
over the years. This is just wrong. I seriously ask you to stop using UPS, at
least for this Christmas season.

I am currently doing research into Django's early life and one question that
remains unanswered and difficult to find is the date of death for his 1st wife
Florine "Bella" Reinhardt Baumgartner.
Can anyone provide this? Or a link/contact where I might find it.
Thanks.

I am selling my 2010 Dupont MD-50. Bought it from Michael Horowitz a year ago
and it has a bigtone pickup and Dupont case. Also included is a Baggs Para
Acoustic D.I. and a Schertler Basik pickup.

The guitar and accessories are in absolute mint condition. Price is $3800,
which includes shipping and insurance in the U.S.

I'll have photos later this morning and possibly a video for youtube.

My interests have now gone to using acoustic archtops and moving away from the
strict Django/gypsy jazz sound.

Please email me if you have any questions at dakjazz18@....

thanks,
David Keary

Hey, Folks! I joined quite a while ago, but hand issues appeared soon after, and
I never really contributed.

So, now that it looks like I can start a slow recovery, I started reading the
various resources here... and found a *huge* amount of spam in the links
section. I was a little surprised, as this groups is semi-moderated.

ashlyncbg, ascelineabf, ashlyncbg and a few others seem to like coupon codes,
with ayesha.kanwel being more focused on SMS spamming (more than 100 links at
the moment!).

Anyway, I just figured it was worth giving a heads up, since this group is
pretty clean comparatively.

Cheers!
