Seeing that Hadden, Mark, and Tony are playing at Rhumba in Columbus
OH reminded me that I forgot to mention seeing them play last month.
Work sent me near Columbus, so I was able to make it their Monday
night performance at this Irish bar called Tommy Keegan's. It's a
very comfortable, laid-back place that gave me the feel of being home
to lots of regulars.
The band smoked through lots of older material, plus played plenty of
newer songs. Weeks later, I have to say that "Trippin' Down to
Mexico" STILL haunts my brain. They played it much more laid-back,
and Mark took a WAILING solo on flute. (It reminded me of the
exceptional vibe on "It Better End Soon", 30 years ago.) Mark just
blew me away with his musicianship. Then, as icing on the cake, Tony
slinked into a jaw dropping solo himself. I'm the first to admit that
I lack the sophistication to really appreciate a drum solo, but Tony's
work somehow got through to my brainpan and made the connection.
Hadden, well, OF COURSE his playing and singing were fantastic. Like
always!
For those of us not in Ohio, I think we've been hoodwinked. Our Ohio
fans have a GREAT THING up there, they know it, and they seem to be
keeping it all to themselves. It is time to share! Shout-out goes to
Slapens and Smitty, both extremely nice folks who made me feel
welcomed. They made a fun time even more fun.
If you able to get to Ohio sometime, I can't recommend strongly enough
that you should try to make Columbus part of your travel plans. I
have no idea what else the city offers, but HSB was enough!
