The 1st Coffee 101 Drum Circle in Plant City is over, but with the sponsorship
of Heather, owner, drummer, hostess extraordinaire, there will be many more 3rd
Friday drum circles.
Dade City, Lakeland, Plant City are three cities whose women came, perhaps a
bit tired after a long work week, but left with new energy from the rhythms that
floated around the coffee house.
The Drum Circle began with women, most who hadn't drummed together, joining
each in rising to another level as we learned how one approaches her drum to
coax her soul to come out and play a while.
Malfoof, maqsoum, baladi, ayoub and saidi were Middle Eastern rhythms shared;
polished around the edges; stretched to their limits to soar, but come back
again only to be asked to take flight once more.
Underlying it all was the comfort of playing and learning from each other.
Low key, but intense too.. we pulled rhythms out that had been dormant... what
a good feeling.. a healing feeling.. a soothing balm.
After a while, we were joined by a young man in a stroller who did his best to
shake a rattle and play a drum. Come back anytime!
Two gentlemen from the Circle of Rhythm and also, Reflections in Rhythm Drum
Circles in Lakeland came and added a little African flavor.. which moved Nyame
to her feet. Oh, does she make us play better!
Heather Davis, gracious owner of Coffee 101, joined the drumming, then served
us decadent deserts. Heather, we will be back next month on the 3rd Friday!
Thank you for your hospitality. The drumming community applauds you!
Namaste,
Sheeba
