'Twas definitely worth it from my standpoint! Sure, there's Facebook and
Twitter and Blue Tooth (seen a dentist about that condition??)
BUT...Harmony hugs are best given and received in person, don't you think?
Lots of warm fuzzies and good feelings are the added benefits of the annual
Harmony barbershop "fix," and we wouldn't have it any other way, eh? God
bless us, everyone!

Subject: [HC] Thank you to the Harmony, Inc. Communications Team!

I would personally like to thank all the women who have done a wonderful job
this year as we develop Marketing and PR applications for Harmony, Inc. I
have been priviledged to work with these women this past year - believe me
when I say they are creative, hard-working, and mostly fun!

They are:

Carolyn Pellow - for pulling together The E-Note every month
don't forget Dorothy Webster who helped as well!

Anita Prather Harvel - IT person extraordinaire! She spent all weekend
taking pictures and posting on Facebook, Twitter, Harmony Connection so that
we could let everyone note at IC&C know what was going on. If you haven't
yet connected to Facebook or Twitter, you might want to check it out.

PS We didn't do a webcast this year because of cost. However, Anita has some
ideas to get around this for next year!

Diane Zanetti - External PR who did an amazing job getting all the PR out
for this convention anniversary. Did you see the sign at the airport? Did
you see the banners on the street? Check out the posting on the Harmony
Connection this morning about TV coverage.

Monica Kompter - Editor of The Key-Note (boy, what a huge task!) And she'll
have another big one trying to capture all of this in print form! Please
start sending her high resolution pictures you have from this weekend (YES -
HIGH RESOLUTION because if their size has to be changed, they get WEAKER and
WEAKer and WEaker, etc.) You can send your photos, along with the pertinent
information about the photo to keynote@harmonyinc.
<mailto:keynote%40harmonyinc.org> org.

I also thank and appreciate all the other women (and their support system!)
for their time and effort to get all of this done.

But wasn't it worth it?

Well what an awesome weekend! on behalf of Montreal City Voices, I would like to
thank all of the people involved with the weekend. It was fantastic, and
everything ran very smoothly. We had a great time, made new friends and sang
with whoever we could. Thank you so much!

To all of the contestants you did a great job congratulations.

For all the medalists, what an amazing group! The evening showcase was
absolutely incredible and so entertaining! Even those that were unable to sing
due to voice problems entertained us and looked great!

Our wonderful MC, Jeanne O'Connor, had us rolling in the aisles laughing, I will
watch for that body part theif, it explains so much!

The parade of champions was phenominal.

The Minor Chords touched all our Hearts and the International Chorus was
absolutely incredible! great job everyone.

Of course a special shout out to Ringtones and UniQue, congratulations ladies,
we are so proud of you!

Now it is back to work and try and come back down to earth from a real high.

Have a great day everyone and see all of you again in New Brunswick.

Great coverage, Diane!

If anyone would like a pdf of the actual article for their scrapbook, I
happened to pick up a Sunday paper at the hotel yesterday. It has a
beautiful picture of Harmony Heritage and solo headshots of two of the

I would personally like to thank all the women who have done a wonderful job
this year as we develop Marketing and PR applications for Harmony, Inc. I have
been priviledged to work with these women this past year - believe me when I say
they are creative, hard-working, and mostly fun!

They are:

Carolyn Pellow - for pulling together The E-Note every month
don't forget Dorothy Webster who helped as well!

Anita Prather Harvel - IT person extraordinaire! She spent all weekend taking
pictures and posting on Facebook, Twitter, Harmony Connection so that we could
let everyone note at IC&C know what was going on. If you haven't yet connected
to Facebook or Twitter, you might want to check it out.

PS We didn't do a webcast this year because of cost. However, Anita has some
ideas to get around this for next year!

Diane Zanetti - External PR who did an amazing job getting all the PR out for
this convention anniversary. Did you see the sign at the airport? Did you see
the banners on the street? Check out the posting on the Harmony Connection this
morning about TV coverage.

Monica Kompter - Editor of The Key-Note (boy, what a huge task!) And she'll have
another big one trying to capture all of this in print form! Please start
sending her high resolution pictures you have from this weekend (YES - HIGH
RESOLUTION because if their size has to be changed, they get WEAKER and WEAKer
and WEaker, etc.) You can send your photos, along with the pertinent information
about the photo to keynote@....

I also thank and appreciate all the other women (and their support system!) for
their time and effort to get all of this done.

But wasn't it worth it?

Thank you, Jan, for all your hard work on the Basket Raffle - it was
amazing! I'm sure that your "beating the drum" on the Harmony Connection
for more baskets and then for ticket sales had a huge impact on the success
of this event. Thanks also to all your volunteers.

The local RI newspaper, Providence Journal, gave Harmony, Inc. some pretty
decent convention coverage this past weekend. A photographer was in attendance
at the Parade of Champions on Thursday evening and there is a video available
online at www.projo.com/videos - scroll down until you see barbershop singers.

There was also an article in the Sunday print edition from a reporter who
visiited during the chorus convention on Saturday. This can be viewed at
   http://www.projo.com/news/content/HARMONY_11-15-09_UNGF27M_v7.353e19e.html

You may have to sign up (free) in order to view.

I'm not sure how long either the video or the print article will be available
so I'd suggest you give it a look as soon as possible.

However, thanks to Rosemary Kelly of Harmony Heritage, I'm posting the
complete print article below.

Thank you so much to everyone who played a part in the filming and interview
process especially U4X who I know had a very long day on Thursday and were
extremely helpful in explaining Harmony, Inc. and barbershop to a non-barbershop
reporter. I think we did find a new fan!

Barbershop singing groups compete in Providence

On the fifth floor of the Rhode Island Convention Center - high above a soggy
sidewalk crowd waiting for admission to a beer festival - the lilting sound of
melodic humming floated down the hallways and fallen sequins sparkled on the
carpet.
Women in glittering costumes whisked to and fro as choral groups from across
the United States and Canada prepared to test their mastery of an a cappella
music style that originated in the early 1900s with the advent of barbershop
quartets.
More than 2,000 contestants from about 80 different groups dedicated to the
four-part harmony style known as barbershop singing converged on Providence for
a four-day event that culminated Saturday with the competition of the chorus
groups.
The event, which started midweek with workshops and competitions for quartets,
is the premier annual competition for Harmony Inc., a women's singing
organization dedicated to preserving the art of barbershop music.
"Over the years, women across the United States and Canada have shared the joy
of barbershop singing," Jan Delvecchio, president of Harmony Inc. said in a
statement. "Singing with Harmony Inc. has given our members the opportunity to
share their love of music with the community and friends."
While it is critical that the group's four-part harmony arrangements remain
true to barbershop style, there was a lot about the competition that was a long
way from men in blazers and straw skimmers singing "Sweet Adeline."
For one thing, most of the groups competing in the 2009 international
competition opted for a lot of pizzazz in their outfits. Glitter, sequins and
crystals abounded in custom-made costumes. The Capital Chordettes of Ottawa,
Ontario, even added a flapper theme with beaded wraps and shiny headbands topped
with red ostrich feathers
The groups varied in size from two dozen to more than 50, and their selections
were as diverse as their hometowns. Some favored traditional songs like "Georgia
on My Mind," while other adapted more contemporary tunes from movies and
Broadway shows.
The key, according to Christine Hayes, director of Silk `n Sounds from New
Haven, Conn., is that the vocals be carried by the traditional barbershop mix of
tenor, lead, baritone and bass parts.
Hayes and Fred Kingsbury, director of Harmony Heritage from the
Pawtucket-Attleboro area, said that one feature that makes barbershop singing

high notes by the tenors, but is carried by the lead singers who are in the
middle of the musical register.

things that make the barbershop sound so recognizable."
Another component that is particularly important in barbershop singing
competitions is the ability to deliver a song with style. In some cases Saturday
that meant dance steps, theatrical gestures or, in one instance, the donning of
clown noses, in the middle of a song.
"Our job is to take the song from the sheet music and carry that message to
the audience," said Kingsbury.
In the warm-up room, the groups practiced their moves, their pitch and also
took time for deep breathing, group hugs and sometimes a simple prayer. "Don't
let it bother you that there's a rock band below us," Kingsbury said shortly
before his singers took the stage a couple of floors above the sounds of the
beer festival. "Just be the actors you need to be for the songs."
In addition to hoping for winning scores from the judges, each of the groups
were also aiming for a little musical magic that comes with barbershop singing.

Congratulations, Harmony! 50 years young, still vibrant and growing!

I had a WONDERFUL time in Providence, thanks to Barbara-Ann, the IC&C team, and
the hostess chapter, Harmony Heritage, but also because of your gracious
acceptance of a guy who appreciates the music you all make. And I'm so honored
that you share that music with me, and with the rest of the world.

Congratulations to all the quartets and choruses who worked so hard to present
their best on stage, so all of us could feel your dreams. The music was
wonderful. Best wishes to those who came out at the top, but remember that you
are ALL winners in the eys and ears of those of us sitting out there in the
audience.

Thanks to the founding members for having their dream, and thanks to all of you
along the way, for keeping that dream alive. As the guys say, "Music is life!"
And the life of Harmony is your music!

Thanks, and Happy 50th!

Barily yours,

Uh..

Well...

Not exactly..

Not yet anyway..

FIRST..Did I tell you that, at dinner Saturday (after the chorus contest),
my family was able to eat together with some of you. As they left to go
shopping for a football with dad, BOTH of my children, (unprovoked, I might
add) gave me a kiss and told me they loved me! I wondered first (and out
loud) what they wanted.then I wondered who they were and what they had done
with my sons. It was a great reminder, to me, that we (mom and dad)ARE
doing an ok job!

Now.Saturday morning, my chorus traditionally has a "rally" breakfast. And
my family was there with me. One of our members started the conversation by
saying, matter of fact-like, "So, we are gonna see you on the Harmony Cruise
in January!" I think I pulled a muscle when my head snapped to my left. and
I bruised my chin (which dropped with my jaw) as I dragged it beyond the
china. BOTH of my children smiled..However..all was not lost..

We made light conversation and recovered a little..I am (sadly) getting
quite good at making stuff up.

I nearly gave it away a few months ago, and Andrew KNEW I was planning a
trip. Canada was the excuse for the need for Passports.Andrew asked me
about a trip n(today, on the way home)..and I said, "yes, to Canada." He
said, "Sweet. You never SAID exactly where we were going this winter!"
(like it would be NORMAL to want to travel NORTH instead of south, in
February). But he does know how much I love to visit our Canadian members!

I made another mistake on the ride home with Andrew.and reminded him of my
chorus mate's mention of a cruise. (Her name is being hidden for her
protection). He had forgotten. He had forgotten until his MOTHER reminded
him! So, as easy as anything, I said, "Yeah.it's a cruise to Canada." I
had to explain that it wasn't a LONG cruise.a couple of nights. He was
THRILLED. "I have never been on a cruise and I have ALWAYS wanted to go,"
he said. I said that he had to keep it to himself. Never mind that we can
DRIVE to New Brunswick in 5 hours. That the Atlantic Ocean is exceptionally
COLD in February.he didn't care..

So..

Now we have only until December 25th to keep it a secret. When they open
gifts on Christmas morning.I promise I will take pictures.

Ya know..as I was driving home today.I thought about my parents. They were
WAITING for retirement to travel. We never did anything this special. My
mom passed when she was 45. Dad at 67. WE (my sibs and I) never had that
with OUR parents. THIS will be a vacation to create a lifetime of
wonderful memories.and just think.YOU have been a part of that! Thanks for
keeping our secret. Thank you for your help on hair-length decisions
(Katie, you are Christian's FAVORITE mom so far!).

Thank you Harmony, Inc.time to shut the brain (and computer) down for a few
hours anyway. You really ARE the best.

Remind me to tell you about the scary stuff that happened last Saturday, and
how touched I was by the folks in New England Voices in Harmony. For now,

Stay safe, sing, remember that wherever there is Harmony, there is love!

D

What a beautiful and touching interview. Thanks for sharing it. My fondest
good wishes go out to Betsy and Debbie for continued good health. The whole
chorus sounded great singing two of the song we also sing at Sounds of the
Seacoast.
See you all in Providence where everyone will do their best and have fun!

Some lovely news to share as we begin celebrations this week...

A portion of New England Voices in Harmony chorus was featured Friday, Nov.
6, on "NH Chronicle," WMUR TV's evening news magazine, in Manchester, NH.
The story features one of our members, Debbie Bartol, a 5-year breast cancer
survivor, who talks about her experiences recovering from breast cancer,
the chorus and what a cappella singing has meant to her. Betsy Westgate, also
a member and breast cancer survivor, and Debbie participated in the Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, Oct. 18, in Nashua. The chorus also
sung at this event. This was a truly inspiring story about the healing power
of music, friendship and support.

For those who'd like to watch...here's a link to the video:
