"My life changed for the better the day I saw Norton and his band being featured
on an Austin City Limits some 30 years ago when I first got interested in
harmonica.

Man, I wish that show was available on video! It seemed like a dream watching
that... I was hooked..."

Wow, you too Ken?! .........
There's been 3 Austin City Limits that changed my life as a
musician......Strength in Numbers, Eric Johnson. But the first was Norton. That
show that night literally blew my mind. Here was someone I'd never heard of. I
actually taped most of it on a cassette ( wish I could find it ) because I knew
something special was happening. The band was sooooooo tight!....the pedal steel
player also affected me with his tone on steel AND guitar. He was playing a Dean
guitar at the time. I had to have that tone, so I packed up my 55 Les Paul
Special, drove to Wauquegun Illinois to trade even up ( not the best decision
I've ever made ).
I wonder if anyone would approach ACL about that show? If re-released, the money
it could raise could go to his family. I'd buy it!

     Brian

McCoy is playing on the Hee Haw Video and listen to the sparseness, he
only plays on one verse but the effect is superb. When I got the call
to play with an older George on Letterman in 2006...Paul Shaffer asked
if I could use the same licks and sparseness so I did. Since it's
Veterans day here in the States, I thought I'd include one with NO
harp content but a WHOLE lotta SOUL of George singin' about the
Vietnam Vets.....The hardest thing to playing behind ol' Possum is
trying not to cry and slobber all over your harp as you listen to
him.,-) Never a dry eye in the house!"

Hi Rob, not being a large CW fan I decided to listen to the George
Jones song about Vietnam Vets that you included in this post. Having
been an Army Helicopter Pilot over there back in '65, the song and
photos brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks for the memories,

Paul

i loved the contributions of Norton.

His records inspired me to focus equally on chromatic and diatonic.

Plus, my CD "HARMONICA DREAMS" was also inspired by Norton, something
I have never revealed until now.

The production approach was to create a music cd for non harmonica
players that had TONS of harp instead of a harmonica cd for harmonica
players. Although my CD has much much more harmonica than norton's cd,
he still helped me to formulate this concept.

Plus, the best......in the eighties when I was in NYC and I had
finished playing on the BLONDIE sessions and video, I called norton up
out of the blue.
I did not know him, but I called him anyways. Norton talked to me, a
complete stranger for over an hour on the phone. What a gift, what an
inspiration he was as a gentleman and musician.

We miss you Norton, I know you are up there playing harp with the
angels.

Can I be the only one disturbed by what sounds as if he´s out of tune most of
the time? Or is it some effect of the amplification? (Harps sometimes tend to
sound out of tune when other instruments don´t -- a natural disadvantage of our
chosen instrument?) Or is it that he´s led the horse to water, but it won´t
drink?
My pitch perception is not impressive at all, so maybe it´s me, but something
here seems to be amiss. Should he have brought more harmonicas?
Cheers,
Martin

Recieved a mail saying tht over on Wolfgang's Vault  today
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/hot-tuna/concerts/winterland-december-31-1970.html

So I checked it out to listen to the infamous Will Scarlet

Wow !
10 tunes
5 key changes
1harp in G
Positions 1st - G , 2nd - D , 3rd - A , 4th - E , 12th - C (used to be called
6th)
Strangely enough, he playes nothing in 5th...

Now you'd think that Kaukonen and Casady could play in B wouldn't you ?

<Agreed -- I would love to hear Richard play that solo on diatonic! It

I'll see what I can do. Much easier for me to do a quick audio recording than a
video--for a video I have to shave, comb my hair, set up the camera and the
lighting, etc., etc. Is it okay if I just do an audio recording and post it to
my site? It's not like you can really see the tuning or what I'm doing with the
harp...

We love all levels of harmonica players.
Raw Beginners: we have a strong program for you, including preseminar
phone lesson.
Advanced and intermediates: we offer separate classes on separate levels.

Jam Camp has evolved toward more of an emphasis on total musicality
through harp playing, songwriting and singing, with lots and lots of
jamming.
By total musicality, we mean, helping our campers "swing" when they play
the harp and making them more confident, more rhythmic, more lyrical,
more adventurous, more "listening,” more relaxed, more ear-trained, more
in touch with their “inner musican.”

Ten Ways We Focus On Your Harping:
1. Pre seminar phone consultation. (E-mail me to make appointment)
2. One to one Lessons at Camp.
3. Small jamming classes and groups for your level with guitar players
and band.
4. Confidence building live jamming atmosphere.
5. Great student and teacher/room ratio.
6. Custom Beginners Program.
7. Custom Personal Advanced Program
8. Opportunities to learn from a variety of great players.
9. Immersion is the best way to learn, especially when it's fun and
focused and varied.
10. Limited Enrollment lets us focus on you.

Guys forgive me for doing this. It's the lawyer in me. I can't help it.
Gotta make the prosecutor prove the elements of his charges.

Playing from the floor is not "Gussing" per se. Said playing from the floor
must be uninvited, unwelcome and disruptive. So, retiring to a hall or a
quiet corner to play along with the band is not gussing per se only gussing
per quod if someone else is disturbed.

On the other hand it is possible to "Gus" from the stage by playing badly,
acting badly, etc. This is apparently a form of "constructive gussing" in
that while the invitation to play is there the ultimate effect is that the
"gussing" player is both unwelcome and disruptive, meeting two of three
critical elements and negating need of the third element, lack of
invitation.

"Mass jamming" where multiple players play at once without apparent rhyme or
reason is not Gussing per se but a form of low folk jamming which may result
in "gus' like effects on the musically sensitive who cannot tolerate and/or
are confused by what appears to them to be musical disorder and disharmony.
Consequently this action, while not "gussing per se" can become "gussing per
quod" if it knowingly annoys a sensitive hearer.

And finally, there are some people who are so tone deaf, boorish,
untalented, insensitive, etc. that any time they pick the instrument up they
are gussing no matter what the situation, resulting in "res ipsa loquitur
gussing," in which the thing or act literally speaks for itself and
possession of harmonica becomes or should be for these people "strict
liability gussing."

Does that about cover it?

There was a discussion earlier about talent, work ethic, and apptitude.
There are tons of talented musicians who are capable of creative thought,
but in a limited way.. They interpret a classical piece for example, but
it's not a radical remaking of the piece. There are also people like myself
who can come up with a hundred original ideas before breakfast, and they all
suck.

Then there's folks the Little Walter who exploited the defects in his
equipment--the distortion, etc, and came up with a new defining sound for
harmonica. Then you have someone like Hendrix who took that to extreme.
Where did he get the idea to treat his guitar like a synthesizer (before
synthesizers were even that well known)? Then you take someone like James
Brown who seemingly woke up one day, decided he'd put the accent on the down
beat instead of the 2 and the 4 and created a whole new style of music--he
essentially created modern top forty.

So to heck with effortless mastery. I want to be the James Brown of
harmonica. How do I do this?

Hello all,

I play harp, sing & front The Magic Frank Blues Band and we've got a couple of
interesting Chicago gigs coming up over the next week--come check us out!

On Friday, November 13 we play at the legendary Wise Fools Pub on Lincoln
Avenue--we're very excited to be taking the stage at this venue, which is
hallowed ground in the North Side Chicago blues scene.
http://www.wisefoolspub.com

On Tuesday, November 17 we'll be playing at a very unique event: we're the house
band for a Chicago-themed cooking show, staged at the gorgeous Copernicus
Theater. This will be a terrific event featuring dozens of food vendors, wine &
beer tastings, food sampling, live blues, cooking demonstrations by
world-renowned chefs....all for a very low entrance price. The organizer of the
event is determined to give it a Chicago blues presence so he wanted to hire a
band with a classic Chicago blues line-up of guitar, harp, etc. The best part
of the deal is that the band will be sampling and judging the delicacies
prepared live on stage during the cooking demonstrations. Chicago blues comes
to the kitchen! http://www.thefeastivals.com

Stop by and say hello if you happen to make it to either of these shows!

Thanks,

John

Hello, Charlie McCoy was not only on tonight's CMA awards, but he was
inducted into the hall of fame of country music, along with Roy Clark.
Charlie played harp on When Country Wasn't Cool. This was a Barbra Mandrel
song, though it wasn't her singing tonight. His playing was impressive as
always. You'll probably be able to pull up this performance tomorrow on
Youtube, just like everything else in the world. If you taped the CMA awards
for later watching on your TVO or DVR device, he plays right after Taylor
Swift played solo acoustic with her twelve-string guitar and had the whole
audience singing along with her song.

Hey David,

I felt it was on the virge of 'clashing' as a lead in note to the modulation
on the original version. To MY ears, if you sit on it too long it sounds
wrong. So when I played it I faded the note 'down' into the
modulation....just the way my ears were hearing it. But I agree with you
that McCoy's (or whoever it is) strong attack on that note kind of grows on
you!,-) Funny how our ears can play tricks on us!,-)

Best, Rob P

I've listened to that solo several times now and I'm still not sure what to
think of the very last note of the harp solo as the rest of the band changes
key.  Is it a clam or is it inspired?! :>  At first I thought it clashed.  But

What do you think Rob? I noticed that you faintly played the same last note on

I miss Norton; he used to play the CBH 2016 and this is my axe. I
forgot how nice it sounds in pop music and Nobody Loves Me brought
back memories. When I saw him at SPAH we talked about the CBH 2016
and I said I thought it was cool of the players that used both axes
fluently. Norton lead the way: now Paparozzi, Singer, Turk,
Musselwhite, Dennis Gruenling, Clint Hoover, .....etc. Little did I
know that would be our last conversation.

This is tough when music dies so young and before it's all come to
the surface!!!!

Bernadette is one of my favorites and you would HAVE to be at the
top of your game (which you ARE), to accompany her in Largo tempo. As
we know Largo is the most difficult. Anyone can play fast. Fast
allows you cover. Largo allows NO mistakes and the timing is so
stretched that breathing becomes a challenge. (Ebb Tide & Send in the
Clowns as examples)Good job hero.

This looks like the one around 82-83 when Miller (even though chubby

Subject: [Harp-L] Backing up a Singer.....
Chromboy@...
Send Email Send Email

The other night I had the good fortune to backup a wonderfully talented Singer,
Ms. Bernadette Peters on a duet of Voice and Harmonica on the traditional song
"Shenandoah". She performs this song all around the world and loves to use just
Harmonica as her accompaniment.

Both Robert Bonfiglio and Tommy Morgan (mentors of mine) have done this live
with her in the past so I knew I had my work cut out for me!

I used a Chromatic as the Musical Director had a chart he wanted me to follow
and I felt the note choice laid out better. I had to readjust some of the double
stops to make it work but kept to the arrangement she felt comfortable with. Ms.
Peters sang the melody very 'Largo' so the piece was long 4:30 minutes. She has
impeccable pitch and tremendous control, time and phrasing with her Voice. My
Job was to compliment, connect and leave space and at the same time provide
harmony and melody that would really let this intertwine a musical duet. Not a
lot of notes but quite a challenge.

Every singer has their own very unique style, Bernadette is Broadway Trained
and she has a very special way of delivering her Lyrics....I really had to
listen to phrasing and then add dynamics and proper length to my 'fills' to make
it work. It was a challenge but her singing really made my job a bit easier! a
fun gig.

I learned a lot about backing up singers from listening to Charlie McCoy and
Jellyroll Johnson. Mickey Raphael does a great job too. But my BEST training was
with the late Don Brooks when I spent time with him in NY in the 80's...what a
pro..

I thought I'd post these links of George Jones...I believe Charlie McCoy is
playing on the Hee Haw Video and listen to the sparseness, he only plays on one
verse but the effect is superb. When I got the call to play with an older George
on Letterman in 2006...Paul Shaffer asked if I could use the same licks and
sparseness so I did. Since it's Veterans day here in the States, I thought I'd
include one with NO harp content but a WHOLE lotta SOUL of George singin' about
the Vietnam Vets.....The hardest thing to playing behind ol' Possum is trying
not to cry and slobber all over your harp as you listen to him.,-) Never a dry
eye in the house!

Finally, a big thanx to Tommy and Robert for all there help...you guys are the
best!

George Jones on Hee Haw so this should be Charlie McCoy on Harp

I am so sad about Noton Buffalo's passing. He was a good friend and strong
supporter of my music. (He wrote the liner notes on my CD.) Just listening to
his two great Capitol albums on LP-- I cut my teeth on these two records!

Anyway, I just talked to a very close friend of Noton's who is working on a
project to compile his unreleased material from his studio (and elsewhere?) This
project was started last month with Norton! This should be very cool and I will
try to notify y'all.

as Norton used to sign off...

There is a video on the Norton Buffalo youtube area just entitled Norton
Buffalo Instrumental. Does anyone know the name of this song? The opening
of this particular version is "Echoes of the Last Stampede" but I never
found out what the main song was titled. There was a period where this was
the opening song of his shows and it was a helluva first number. This
period came after he broke up the Stampede and played with the band shown
here on a few videos, which was the forerunner of the Knockouts and had
Johnny V on guitar. He had a fews songs from this era like this one, High
Tide in Wingo, I'm Putting My Trust in You and some other videos here that
were never recorded, at least never released on any record or CD I know
about. If there is a missing CD with these songs someone please let me
know.

Watching some Norton Buffalo videos really brought back memories. I must
have seen him live at least 30 times, much more than I saw anyone else.
Besides his amazing musicianship it is astounding what he does logistically
and was it was fascinating just to watch him. On the majority of songs live
he played more than one harp, often diatonic and chromatic in the same song.
He is juggling mics, turning volume dials, playing maracas or tambourine,
looking at harps to make sure he's got the right one and it's right side
up, then hanging mic cords around his neck, and singing lead. In some of
his band iterations, he would also be plunking out chords on a keyboard in
the midst of all this. I certainly didn't know him but was lucky enough to
meet him a couple times and got to chat. Not only was he my favorite harp
player but was an unsurpassed multi-talented entertainer.

Sounds interesting. I use CT harps quite a bit. Let us know when you make a

Hi Joe,

I would've been disappointed as well without Norton's harmonica. That's what we
harp players want... to see and hear Norton play harp! And we're going to miss
him so very much.

Did you watch the YouTube with Norton and the Steve Miller band recorded many
years ago with James Cotton ? I just love the look on James' face when Norton
is soloing... I think he liked it alot !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zucb1SC9aus

I treasure all Norton's albums with his own bands and the duo with Roy Rogers...
they're the best!

My life changed for the better the day I saw Norton and his band being featured
on an Austin City Limits some 30 years ago when I first got interested in
harmonica.

Man, I wish that show was available on video! It seemed like a dream watching
that... I was hooked...

Smo-Joe, Yeah, too bad he didn't get more playin' time with some of the
other acts he toured with ala Miller, Doobies and others....he was used
sometimes for his background vcls and percussion skills I guess as they
didn't use harp on all the tunes,,,,

Ken, I agree....I forgot how cool 'Nobody wants me' is!!! Nice he uses both
axes in the same tune and it really works well....let's add this to the
essential Norton list!,-) Thanx for posting this Video!

I also, always love his CHROMO solo on 'When a Man Loves a Woman' it's on
THE ROSE (Bette Midler) soundtrack. He plays as pasrt of the horn section
and then steps out front to take the PERFECT solo!

Best,
Rob P

Well. I gotta tell you Ken (since you're a buddy), I watched a PBS
show about a month ago, BUT it was FROM a year ago. It was Steve
Miller Band with Norton. I was quite disappointed and felt that I
wasted an hour of my life. (hour and a half with pledge breaks). It
was all Steve Miller and every tune sounded the same, the beat was
the same and it seemed as if the keys were the same on everything.
Boooooring. Meanwhile, Norton shook a tamborine and added some
(almost undescernable) vocals. No harp. No harp at all. Bummer.

Rob,

I sure hope we can see some of this tribute to Norton at some point.
A DVD would be great, and treasured by all of us Norton Buffalo fans.

I like your two choices of favorite Norton Buffalo songs ("Puerto de Azul" and
"Walking Down to Suzy's"). These 2 have always been favorites of mine.

If I could add a 3rd song that has both diatonic and chromatic harmonicas, it
would be "Nobody Wants Me". The opening solo is on diatonic, and later there's
a chromatic solo. Norton's harmonicas, voice, and melody just go together so
well.

I made a custom ringtone for my cell phone from "Walking Down to Suzy's" for
when my wife calls me for sentimental reasons going back to when we first met
and I made her a cassette tape of "traveling songs" for her car.

I've been listening to "Lovin' in the Valley of the Moon" and "Desert Horizon"
alot the past 2 weeks. I have the original vinyl LP's of these albums, as well
as the CD, and they have always been my most favorite albums of everything I
own.

Here's a YouTube of a very young Norton doing "Nobody Wants Me"...

I once played at a neighborhood bar...( you might call it something
else) where the patrons were mostly on foot do to previous license
revocations.
Once upon a gig...
There was this guy playing from the back...great volume...wrong key.
I was not much better than him at the time so this was intimidating.

I could see him gaining courage as he drank and the night wore on.
finally he made his run for the stage....
he jumped...this was a high stage!
grabbed my singing mic stand to secure his foothold on the stage.
and began to fall slowly backward...
I kept playing through my harp mic and gently..(as i remember it now)
placed my foot in his chest, grabbed the mic stand and pushed him
backwards.

This was the best applause (maybe the only) that I got all night and
the guy was not so gently escorted to the parking lot by a gang of
self appointed
security guards...

No...I don't miss that place...

but gussing outside the gig while you can see in the window...is how I
learned most of what I know today about playing on stage..

I never wanted the guy on stage to see me as I hid in the shadows and
sucked in his life force...

Mark Hummel, Mark Ford, and David Burgin, Andy Just.......even Taj
Mahal...I couldn't sit in the club watching the show...I just went
outside and played along.
Nobody knew but me..It would be rude and distracting if anyone could
see or hear you...but I would suggest picking the nicer parking lots.
I was always frustrated if some drunk noticed me and came over to
comment on my show...
I wanted to be left alone to work out on my own.

That's the best kind of gussing...or is it gussing at all.

I still do it when I know a great Sax player will be on stage...
you can't get this from a recording...

Please...Not in the audience...no....I can hear the guy from playing
in the restroom...all the way from the stage...nobody else can...but I
can hear him.
It ruins my night...too insecure I guess...or maybe I am just
listening very carefully.
Nobody any good ever does this...do they...It would be worse if they
were good, I guess.

Please check you harps at the door.

Grant
