of Will Scarlet & Hot Tuna (electric) was made almost 30 years ago (1970) it's
more than likely that the harmonica used was tuned closer to J.I. than 12TET
which could explain....

BTW Can anyone date when the 1st ET tuned Diato's were on the market place ?

There is acoustic theory to support your empirical results.

Lets be clear here that we are not discussing "no
difference"; we are discussing "no perceptible difference."

I try not to let my feelings enter into these discussions.
It is my purpose to reduce, not create controversy. The
acoustics of the harmonica are objective facts. Although I
don't claim to understand them completely, that is my goal.

The shape of the covers will not affect the direction of the
sound because of diffraction. When a wave emerges from an
opening that is much smaller than a wavelength (the case
here), it propagates radially in all directions as from a
point source..like a pebble falling into a pool of still
water.

A non-technical explanation is this. All of that sound
came through that tiny .080" x .5" reed slot. Since the
opening under the cover at the back of the harp is much
larger than that, there is plenty of room for the sound to
escape.

Only for the sake of argument, assume that the amount of
sound energy reaching the ear is proportional to the area
under the covers at the rear of the harmonica. Even if you
increase the area by 50%, that's an increase of only 1.7
db...hardly perceptible.

I have a sound meter. I have covered 75% of the area at the
back of a diatonic with a finger and have not seen any
reduction in the loudness on the meter.

Like you, I conclude that opening the covers isn't worth the
effort.

Vern

Melody?

I haven't seen any vids but do have GMs with cover plates "opened up"
by others (back and side) and by myself (back only).

However, I don't alter GM cover plates any longer as I didn't find a
difference in terms of loudness, tone, etc, when I compare the altered
coverplates to unaltered ones, when tested on a specific comb/reed
plate GM combination. Also confirmed this impression by asking 3rd
parties and by comparing digitally recorded test samples.

The only thing that changed was that the altered cover plates were
less resistant to distortion / crushing than when in their pre-altered
state.

It may be that differing cover plate designs are affected differently.
The GM cover plates are pretty solid compared to some other models.

Or perhaps we're back to a "comb material"-like controversy. I'm
interested in what Vern might have to say on this? Perhaps he's
already made his feelings known...

Here's a link to a vid that Dave Payne made on opening up cover
plates. If trying on a GM would suggest leaving the middle cover plate
brace at the back of the cover plates intact:

My Roland Edirol R-09HR does the same thing, even when using the remote control!
I didn't know it was for "level testing", though. (how can you see levels when
you're not standing near it?) I thought it was being "armed" or something. Still
seems like a useless function to me, because the AGC or limiter takes care of
any problem with the levels.

I've been using the Vox DA5 for a little over half a year, mostly for
busking, and a couple of times at gigs to cut through the ambient noise (not
stage gigs, but as part of an acoustic band, once at a wedding party and a
couple of times in a bar where we were the house band). I like it. It's
compact and lightweight. Batteries last a long time.

I use the Blues 3 or Drive setting, with reverb. I keep the tone and gain
down. Madcat Shaker mic with an impedence transformer. Sometimes an SM57
(with impedence transf.). Way more than enough volume.

I really like the irony in your e-mail! The words "efforless mastery"
cached my attention ... ;-)

This is how I like to think about making music:

"Music has it's own evolutionary process. All of us that listen, play
and talk about music help this process to go in certain directions.
No direction is better than another. No direction is of a higher or
worse quality than another. It's only a direction. Your personality
adds to this process and
without the need for self-validation, creativity flows naturaly."

So, to me, all of us here on Harp-L are a James Brown of the harmonica!!

Abraços,

Wim Dijkgraaf

Here's my beef with the H2. You have to hit the record button twice

initiates the recording process.

I myself and a number of my friends have missed recording gigs because we

I do not think Jimi Lee ever performed on ACL. We both live in Austin
and are friends. Playing the ACL show is a HUGE deal for those who
live here, playing the ACL festival is still good, but not in the same
way. As far as I am aware he has not played either. That does not
take away from his accomplishments.

Anyway, my point is, if Jimi had played ACL, I think I would know.
I'll ask him.

Wow, you too Ken?! .........
There's been 3 Austin City Limits that changed my life as a
musician......Strength in Numbers, Eric Johnson. But the first was Norton. That
show that night literally blew my mind. Here was someone I'd never heard of. I
actually taped most of it on a cassette ( wish I could find it ) because I knew
something special was happening. The band was sooooooo tight!....the pedal steel
player also affected me with his tone on steel AND guitar. He was playing a Dean
guitar at the time. I had to have that tone, so I packed up my 55 Les Paul
Special, drove to Wauquegun Illinois to trade even up ( not the best decision
I've ever made ).
I wonder if anyone would approach ACL about that show? If re-released, the money

if I could use the same licks and sparseness so I did. Since it's
Veterans day here in the States, I thought I'd include one with NO

Vietnam Vets.....The hardest thing to playing behind ol' Possum is
trying not to cry and slobber all over your harp as you listen to

Hi Rob, not being a large CW fan I decided to listen to the George
Jones song about Vietnam Vets that you included in this post. Having
been an Army Helicopter Pilot over there back in '65, the song and
photos brought back a lot of memories.

Thanks for the memories,

Paul

i loved the contributions of Norton.

His records inspired me to focus equally on chromatic and diatonic.

Plus, my CD "HARMONICA DREAMS" was also inspired by Norton, something
I have never revealed until now.

The production approach was to create a music cd for non harmonica
players that had TONS of harp instead of a harmonica cd for harmonica
players. Although my CD has much much more harmonica than norton's cd,
he still helped me to formulate this concept.

Plus, the best......in the eighties when I was in NYC and I had
finished playing on the BLONDIE sessions and video, I called norton up
out of the blue.
I did not know him, but I called him anyways. Norton talked to me, a
complete stranger for over an hour on the phone. What a gift, what an
inspiration he was as a gentleman and musician.

We miss you Norton, I know you are up there playing harp with the
angels.

Can I be the only one disturbed by what sounds as if he´s out of tune most of
the time? Or is it some effect of the amplification? (Harps sometimes tend to
sound out of tune when other instruments don´t -- a natural disadvantage of our
chosen instrument?) Or is it that he´s led the horse to water, but it won´t
drink?
My pitch perception is not impressive at all, so maybe it´s me, but something
here seems to be amiss. Should he have brought more harmonicas?
Cheers,
Martin

Recieved a mail saying tht over on Wolfgang's Vault  today
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/hot-tuna/concerts/winterland-december-31-1970.html

So I checked it out to listen to the infamous Will Scarlet

Wow !
10 tunes
5 key changes
1harp in G
Positions 1st - G , 2nd - D , 3rd - A , 4th - E , 12th - C (used to be called
6th)
Strangely enough, he playes nothing in 5th...

Now you'd think that Kaukonen and Casady could play in B wouldn't you ?

I'll see what I can do. Much easier for me to do a quick audio recording than a
video--for a video I have to shave, comb my hair, set up the camera and the
lighting, etc., etc. Is it okay if I just do an audio recording and post it to
my site? It's not like you can really see the tuning or what I'm doing with the
harp...

We love all levels of harmonica players.
Raw Beginners: we have a strong program for you, including preseminar
phone lesson.
Advanced and intermediates: we offer separate classes on separate levels.

Jam Camp has evolved toward more of an emphasis on total musicality
through harp playing, songwriting and singing, with lots and lots of
jamming.
By total musicality, we mean, helping our campers "swing" when they play
the harp and making them more confident, more rhythmic, more lyrical,
more adventurous, more "listening,” more relaxed, more ear-trained, more
in touch with their “inner musican.”

Ten Ways We Focus On Your Harping:
1. Pre seminar phone consultation. (E-mail me to make appointment)
2. One to one Lessons at Camp.
3. Small jamming classes and groups for your level with guitar players
and band.
4. Confidence building live jamming atmosphere.
5. Great student and teacher/room ratio.
6. Custom Beginners Program.
7. Custom Personal Advanced Program
8. Opportunities to learn from a variety of great players.
9. Immersion is the best way to learn, especially when it's fun and
focused and varied.
10. Limited Enrollment lets us focus on you.

If you've "Gussed" in the past and no one complained and someone accuses you
later on, the claim may be dismissed under "Res Juda Cata".

Nice to have a legal bull dog on our side....

Guys forgive me for doing this. It's the lawyer in me. I can't help it.
Gotta make the prosecutor prove the elements of his charges.

Playing from the floor is not "Gussing" per se. Said playing from the floor
must be uninvited, unwelcome and disruptive. So, retiring to a hall or a
quiet corner to play along with the band is not gussing per se only gussing
per quod if someone else is disturbed.

On the other hand it is possible to "Gus" from the stage by playing badly,
acting badly, etc. This is apparently a form of "constructive gussing" in
that while the invitation to play is there the ultimate effect is that the
"gussing" player is both unwelcome and disruptive, meeting two of three
critical elements and negating need of the third element, lack of
invitation.

"Mass jamming" where multiple players play at once without apparent rhyme or
reason is not Gussing per se but a form of low folk jamming which may result
in "gus' like effects on the musically sensitive who cannot tolerate and/or
are confused by what appears to them to be musical disorder and disharmony.
Consequently this action, while not "gussing per se" can become "gussing per
quod" if it knowingly annoys a sensitive hearer.

And finally, there are some people who are so tone deaf, boorish,
untalented, insensitive, etc. that any time they pick the instrument up they
are gussing no matter what the situation, resulting in "res ipsa loquitur
gussing," in which the thing or act literally speaks for itself and
possession of harmonica becomes or should be for these people "strict
liability gussing."

Does that about cover it?

yeah, man, now that's what I'm talkin' about - smokin' rhythm section, right
down to the bored looking bass player and harmonica lines played non-harmonicky.

one of those clips that I just wanted to check out and found myself riveted
watching right to the end.

bravo

So to heck with effortless mastery. I want to be the James Brown of

There was a discussion earlier about talent, work ethic, and apptitude.
There are tons of talented musicians who are capable of creative thought,
but in a limited way.. They interpret a classical piece for example, but
it's not a radical remaking of the piece. There are also people like myself
who can come up with a hundred original ideas before breakfast, and they all
suck.

Then there's folks the Little Walter who exploited the defects in his
equipment--the distortion, etc, and came up with a new defining sound for
harmonica. Then you have someone like Hendrix who took that to extreme.
Where did he get the idea to treat his guitar like a synthesizer (before
synthesizers were even that well known)? Then you take someone like James
Brown who seemingly woke up one day, decided he'd put the accent on the down
beat instead of the 2 and the 4 and created a whole new style of music--he
essentially created modern top forty.

So to heck with effortless mastery. I want to be the James Brown of
harmonica. How do I do this?

I'm pretty sure Terry MacMillan played on "I Was Country When Country Wasn't
Cool." I had the honor of performing last May for Charlie's induction
ceremony into the Country Music Hall Of Fame.....still waiting for the
promised DVD however.

Hello all,

I play harp, sing & front The Magic Frank Blues Band and we've got a couple of
interesting Chicago gigs coming up over the next week--come check us out!

On Friday, November 13 we play at the legendary Wise Fools Pub on Lincoln
Avenue--we're very excited to be taking the stage at this venue, which is
hallowed ground in the North Side Chicago blues scene.
http://www.wisefoolspub.com

On Tuesday, November 17 we'll be playing at a very unique event: we're the house
band for a Chicago-themed cooking show, staged at the gorgeous Copernicus
Theater. This will be a terrific event featuring dozens of food vendors, wine &
beer tastings, food sampling, live blues, cooking demonstrations by
world-renowned chefs....all for a very low entrance price. The organizer of the
event is determined to give it a Chicago blues presence so he wanted to hire a
band with a classic Chicago blues line-up of guitar, harp, etc. The best part
of the deal is that the band will be sampling and judging the delicacies
prepared live on stage during the cooking demonstrations. Chicago blues comes
to the kitchen! http://www.thefeastivals.com

Stop by and say hello if you happen to make it to either of these shows!

Thanks,

John
