Transatlantic *trading* is not a problem at all. I do it regularly. Before
Sept. 11th an airmail 'small packet' package from England to the eastern
seaboard would average 5 days in transit, mid-west about 6 days and west
coast about 7. Cost of posting a package of 10 cdrs UK>USA is currently
£2.18 or so. *Blanks and postage* is slightly more problematical, as US
stamps are not valid in UK and vice-versa. Best way round that is to
negotiate an additional no. of blank cdrs that the sender includes to cover
the return postage. TDK CDRs currently cost around 50 pence each in uk, so
to cover a 10 cd package I guess about 4 or 5 extra should about cover that.
Since Sept.11th transit is averaging about 14 days. Perfectly
understandable, given the circumstances.
Robin
Hi all,
I wondered if anybody had any thoughts on how to deal with the
transatlantic trades, is this something people are willing to deal
with or is it too much trouble? Being somewhat knew to the whole idea
is there an easy way of doing this? I know that I can't be the only
person wallowing on the wrong side of the Harper stomping grounds!
Neil
Salut, Harpoonists -
I have the following Harper shows for trade or donation to the list
( isn't there another term :-
Heavy Crazy Radio 1 In Concert London 1974
Cambridge Folk Festival 28/7/84
Roy Harper & Jimmy Page Rock City Covent Garden 4/11/84
Bloomsbury Theatre 09/01/93
Same Old Rock - Brighton 11/11/94
12 Bar Club, London 12.11.96
small I know , but perfectly formed .
I also would be prepared to copy some 17/9/01's for the group if
people don't have copy facilities . I can't say that my heart is going
pitter-pat at .shn though . I have plenty acronyms in my life already and am
getting close to capacity - remember when Homer took up learning French
and immediately forgot how to drive ... I guess my view is that I will
wrestle with whatever it takes to get at the music ,but don't have any
problems with EAC copies so why make life complicated ?

this one will be coming to you as a shn disc (on the same vine that we set
up through the eurotraders list) soon enough anyway....
hope that's ok...
Alan
i just got two more shows this morning, bloomsbury theatre from '93, two
consecutive nights.
i'll sort something out...

Hi all
Just a brief word or two as I just discovered the list yesterday. Roy is
one of the greatest writers and performers ever. (He and John Martyn both).
And always an activist and a man if courage in his convictions. I'm not a
nostalgic and don't listen much to music from the past - most of my albums
departed long ago - but Flat Baroque and Berserk is one that still gets an
airing from time to time.
I am right out of the loop these days so it is good to see that he is still
performing. I saw him four times from 1970 (solo acoustic - in Crewe if I
remember) to the early 80s including a brief free benefit appearance in
Trafalgar Square at some demo or other.
I have a plextor and EAC and occasionally do some trading so look forward
to hearing what he sounds like now. Do any shows from way back when
circulate? As with the ISB, I always preferred the acoustic stuff to the
later rock efforts.
Does he play with a band or solo these days? Saw him once with Jimmy Page
(Battersea Park, sometime in the early 80's) but he really seemed an
anonymous shouiter, all the subtleties of voice, words and guitar playing
were lost. Would be glad to hear that he has re-discovered what he did best
and like no other.
Cheers

PS - Alan, no doubt you'll get plenty of offers but if not then I will
happily handle b&p's on the Manchester show you mentioned. As it's only a
couple of disks I could do, say, five with no problem. I have plenty of GD
trading experience although no longer active.
Alan, happy to take this show and offer it back to the list. noB & noP X3.
(That's "free" in other words).

yes, i know that they do routinely tape everything to DAT straight from the
sound desk, and have been doing this since the eighties.
In other words there must be a very large vault of roy soundboards
somewhere.
It would be very easy indeed for them to devise a new series of cut-price
live discs, i would imagine.
here's hoping...
Alan
hi
i have a copy of this show here, 2 discs (audio format not SHN)
I will send this to the first person to email me (in the UK),
who is willing to satisfy these little conditions:
a) you must then make a similar offer to this group - or offer a few B+P's
of the show. (please give details of what you are willing to do, eg - b+p 3
copies to other list members)
b) you must know how to copy the discs correctly (and that means extracting
with EAC)
i recorded the show myself, and edited it etc. It's not bad at all. A little
peaky in places (the theatre was pitch black and i couldn't see the levels
on the MD machine) but it's really quite good overall. definately worth
having.
It was the very first night of the tour.
good luck
Alan
Hi
I first heard Roy in 1976 when I had just left school and a friend
played me Flat Baroque.. it blew me away, then it was HQ totally different
style same effect, he's been the main man ever since, never bowing to
fashion or what is currently "in" just telling it how it is. Personally I
think his output from 1990 to date has been right up there with his best,
his voice was fantastic on the recent tour, I was at the RFH show and the CD
is amazing, I just hope he allows some more complete concerts to be
released, there must be loads in the can, I'm sure we'd all be happy to buy
them & he'd reap the financial rewards which I'm sure would help now he
doesn't do the big tours of yesteryear.
have a good weekend

Hello,
I finally got around to taking the time to introduce myself it seems,
I've been listening to Harper since the early eighties, started in St
Helens when all the vinyl copies of "Born In Captivity" were stolen
followed him consistently until we all made the move to the USA and
gone are the days of the four times a year Harper show. Last time I
clearly remember seeing him(I know there have been other times) was
Suffolk'n'Goode festival with John Martyn and Bert Jansch, I guess
the Strawbs were there too but I think everything got too much for me
by then.
Biggest regret was leaving the UK four weeks months before Harpers
appearance at Cropredy if I'd known travel plans would have been
changed.
So hello and I don't know enough about SHN but have grown to love
extracting with EAC. I think I'm in the first category Colin
mentioned although the search for Harper is mostly to do with missing
those nocturnal forays to dark rooms to experience something at times
captivating but always interesting and thought provoking.
Alan you are incredibly brave to play the "Black Cloud of Islam" it's
an easily misunderstood piece of music.
Neil
i think the main advantage of SHN is that for a small vine, for example,
people burn their own audios from the shn discs, which get passed on to the
next person.
The result is that everyone gets completely identical discs.
I bet if you got 10 people to copy audio > audio then by the last one there
would be faults on the discs.
(maybe not every time, but there are great risks when people don't know how
to extract audio, - and my experience is that most of the stormcock members
didn't have much idea about how to make good safe copies of audio discs)
i'm in favour of whichever method is
a)easiest for people and
b)accurate enough so that in a few years we're not all trading glitchy discs
because we couldn't get it right in the beginning.
EAC must be used if we're doing audio>audio.
anyone who hasn't got this yet might wander over to www.exactaudiocopy.de
and get a copy (it's FREE!)
thanks

Hi all,
here is a list of what is the best quality Harper concert material I
have, most are 2 discs a few are 3 and a couple are 1, I do have quite a bit
more but the quality is not so hot, I can post a complete list but this is
just to get things going, this stuff is all very listenable to, if you need
any more info feel free to email at jugula@...

I think I'll post to the Stormcock list an offer to tree Bloomsbury 1/8 and
1/9, or to be more clever - the Spitz show from 98, just to drum up some
controversy.
Or maybe not.

Hi,
I really can't get to grips with this shn thing & don't wish to waste
any more time on it (i've just spent over half an hour converting another
double cd to shn and again it was over 800 mb).
What I am prepared to do is make perfect copies of any of my RH concert
recordings and send to Alan (if he doesn't mind) & he can do the shn thing
for those who want it, any one who doesn't like the shn idea can send me
blanks & a stamp (I should be able to reuse the jiffy bag) & I'll make the
discs for them & return within a couple of days, how does that sound? I'll
sort out a list of what I have & post to the list ASAP.
Barry
Hello,
I think that the format in which music is distributed depends on the quantity
and way in which it is to be done, i.e. single trade, tree, vine, weed or
whatever....and of course whether the recipient has access to a burner.
For a single trade, shn may not be the best suited option, but for larger
distribution it can be.
A far as this list is concerned, Alan has set it up in order for people
interested in available live recordings to share in them. The way I see it sthat
this list will basically attract two kinds of people (although of course all
will be Roy fans)
1) Those interesed in collecting live recordings that posess one or tow or none
at all but would like to get into it
2) Those already involved in collecting live recordings
Check out the Harperzone that Alan has set up. Only a handful of people have
registered as traders, yet there are 29 people already registered on this
traders list. Sure, there will be many who don't have or don't want to be
'registered' as an 'official' trader and there is nothing wrong with that at
all, but presumably, there are many people on this list that would rather B&P
etc than want to become involved in what can be a time consuming (and extremely
addictive) venture.
I guess at the end of the day, it comes down to economy of scale, and the
preference of the person offering the music.
....I think I'll shut up now as I've just arrived back from the pub and am not
thinking entirely clearly, but hopefully, my point is understood.
sorry ...I'll come back when I'm sober!
Colin

Hi
I agree with John, shn is not worth the effort, it took me ages to
compress 2 cds only to find the files were still too big for 1 disc, Alan
keeps telling me to stick with it! so I'll keep an open mind but I need
convincing, as it's time consuming and doesn't always have the desired
effect, if anyone has any advice please send it in.
Apart from that I like the new list and have some good quality RH stuff
which I'll be more than happy to distribute to the list (either in shn or
otherwise) I'm sure we'll be able to come an agreement whether this is a
good format or not, won't we?

Alan,
Brave move playing 'the Black Cloud Of islam' - I noticed Roy didn't play it
this tour ...
Anyone else have a preference about SHN's - should we set up some kind of
standard for trees / vines on this group ?
I'm still firmly in the 'can't be arsed with SHN's' camp - I still don't see
the point in compressing your WAVs to send to someone to uncompress them,
especially if they have EAC (which they should...), just to save one disc.
Standing by to be (naked) flamed ...
(oo-err, now there's a thought . . . .)
John
barry - don't give up on me baby!
SHN is cool, honest....
i'll send you a copy of roy harper at the lowry, manchester - it was
the first night of the tour - 17.9.01
it's one shn disc and it expands out to 2 audio discs.
after you have burned your copies perhaps you can offer the shn disc
back to this group, and we can keep that going for a while until
everyone who wants it, has it. sound like a reasonable idea ?
I did black cloud of islam tonight at my local "folk" club (although
no "folk music" whatsoever gets played there) and everyone reacted
quite well. I could tell people were a bit on edge and listened
attentively to the lyrics, they even clapped at the end, not that
clapping at the end of my performances is a totally rare experience ;-
)
anyway it made a nice thoughtful change inbetween the ordinary stuff
being played. i think i introduced it as " this song's not racist,
honest"
bye for now
Alan
....I'll give up

Hi after spending all afternoon messing around I finally managed to compress
the files of a double RH cd to shn files but it still added up to 820mb
which will not fit on 1 disc....I'll give up
barry
i think John may have been suggesting that people might want to post a
little introductory kind of message about themselves, maybe ?
so here's mine, anyway.
Hi I'm alan and i manage to fill my spare time with creating online
communities for music freaks. My main achievement so far in this direction
has been the grateful dead group i started, which has grown massively and is
a wonderful collection of top people! find out more at www.eurodead.net
I'm 30, and i first saw Harper in about 1988/89 (i think) in Bangor in North
wales, aged 17 or 18. I stumbled in with two friends, late, all of us
stoned and giggling like idiots tying to find our seats much to the
annoyance and maybe some amusement of the audience (and Roy too). I seem to
remember Roy addressing us "allright lads ?"
as someone who had been playing guitar for a few years and into stuff like
hendrix, floyd, led zep etc, i was instantly into roy's sound and his songs
struck me straight away as the work of someone very special indeed.
Whilst at University in Leeds from 89-92 i saw roy many many times. Leeds,
Sheffield, Bradford, York and back home too in theatre clwyd, mold (why
doesn't he play there anymore ?). and some great ones in the lakes once,
kendal brewery arts centre anyone?
I remember seeing Nick for the first time too, when he appeared all nervous
and in leather pants. i think he was doing guitar man at that point.
after about 93 or so i don't think i saw roy or nick again until 99 or even
2000.
i was there at the RFH though, wouldn't have missed that.
recently i've started taking more of an active role in trying to record
gigs, with a decent stereo condenser mic into a minidisc recorder. (more on
those later)
And a week tonight, i'll be going to see Nick in Ruthin - a tiny venue which
will only hold 70 or so, so that'll be nice.
anyway, enough rambling.
bye for now

Why not stick to audio discs (WAV files) then everyone can use them ?
I know the all pro-SHN arguments, but we're not talking about large numbers of
discs here ...
Cheers,
John
Welcome to everyone on this list and a BIG thankyou to Alan for setting it
up.Would it be useful for us to know who is actually on this list - or do people
want to be anonymous ?
Is there anybody out there ... ?
Cheers,
John
is there anyone here who doesn't know how to deal with SHN files ?
i'm hoping it's going to be the best way to distribute music.
But it does mean that you have to be using a computer burner and not those
awful hifi type standalone units.
cheers
Alan
just a quick thanks to all of you for joining this list so early on and
helping give it the boost it needs to gain some momentum.
And a little reminder that there's a traders directory which you can sign up
to also, at:
http://eurodead.net/harper/traders.htm
to post messages to the group, just send an email to:
harpertraders@yahoogroups.com
don't be shy!
cheers
Alan
PS I want to establish an online collection of cd covers for the shows and
have started it off in the files section, with two covers for shows i
recorded myself.
You can get them here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/harpertraders/files/
The system is set up so that any one of us can upload files, it's a real
communal thing....
so if you have any, please upload them for us all to share - let's make this
a really good resource.
thanks again
hi all
i just uploaded some photos i took of roy and andy at widnes - 22.9.01
you can find them at :
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/harpertraders/lst
there is also a bunch of pics of Nick, from a gig in July.
enjoy ;-)
Alan
Hi
welcome to this new email list, just for people who want to trade Harper
recordings.
Please please please - don't ever trade commercially available stuff - go
out and buy it!
This forum is for people who might want to acquire or even collect some of
the many many audience recordings which exist of Roy Harper and his son,
Nick Harper.
I set this up because it seemed that the main other online email list for
Harper fans, Stormcock, seems uncomfortable with the idea of getting some
organised trading sorted out. That's fine of course, I'm not criticising the
good folks there.
It's just that I know lots of us have been crawling around in the dark
trading for ages and now we have this list just for that purpose.
If you choose, you can also join the Harper traders directory, located at
www.eurodead.net/harper/traders.htm
HOW this list works -
you post a message to the list (by emailing harpertraders@yahoogroups.com ,
and then it automatically goes to everyone else who has signed up to join
the list. Also, any replies to messages will go to the whole list too)
Of course, we can talk about anything else too, not just trading cds....
tea-cosies on heads anyone? ;-)
Alan
