PLUS about 30 fellow "Campers" from all over the world.

If you are flying, you will probably want to fly into Memphis, get a
ride, or rent a car
to drive down "The Blues Highway" (Highway 61) about 1-1/2 hours to
Clarksdale.
(We will help you find a drive-mate.)

The Shack Up Inn has one and two bedroom shacks and bins. The facilities
all have refrigerators and small kitchens.
If you get a two bedroom shack, and share with another camper, you can
lower your rate to about $40 a night.
The single shacks and "bins" are about twice that. Still a great price
ande an unforgettable experience.

We love all levels of harmonica players.
Raw Beginners: we have a strong program for you, including preseminar
phone lesson.
Advanced and intermediates: we offer separate classes on separate levels.

Jam Camp has evolved toward more of an emphasis on total musicality
through harp playing, songwriting and singing, with lots and lots of
jamming.
By total musicality, we mean, helping our campers "swing" when they play
the harp and making them more confident, more rhythmic, more lyrical,
more adventurous, more "listening,” more relaxed, more ear-trained, more
in touch with their “inner musican.”

Ten Ways We Focus On Your Harping:
1. Pre seminar phone consultation. (E-mail me to make appointment)
2. One to one Lessons at Camp.
3. Small jamming classes and groups for your level with guitar players
and band.
4. Confidence building live jamming atmosphere.
5. Great student and teacher/room ratio.
6. Custom Beginners Program.
7. Custom Personal Advanced Program
8. Opportunities to learn from a variety of great players.
9. Immersion is the best way to learn, especially when it's fun and
focused and varied.
10. Limited Enrollment lets us focus on you.

I have some questions...
Hi Marvin,
I wash my harps (diatonic and chromatic) in my kitchen sink with warm water and
dish soap. I soke them for a few minutes and swish them around then rinse them
off with cool water. I dry then on a towel after shaking and patting them out a
bit and gently blowing and drawing to insure water isn't blocking the reed
slots. All my harps have plastic combs or treated wood combs which don't expand.
I have never needed to run a fan or hair dryer. I just let them sit on the
counter for a while and they dry just fine. I don't use a lot of dish soap, just
enough to make a few suds and that does fine to loosen and float away the
grime/crud that can build up. There are about 35 harps in my working case and it
doesn't take more that 30 minutes to get them all clean, slides working, reeds
working and dried off. I have never use alcohol to dry harps and don't think it
is necessary. -- Sonny Derin

I have some questions concerning rinsing, not cleaning, my harps:

Is there any advantage of rinsing with alcohol over water?

Should you rinse with cold, warm, or hot water?

Is it beneficial to use alcohol after rinsing with water, to accelerate drying?

Can drying harps with a hair drier do any damage? What about blowing air from a
fan?

Thanks,

Marvin Fleischman

Aye, same here -- almost always get flagged in my carry-on. I'd honestly
never though to dig them out and put them into a separate tray. Usually
only takes a minute -- they're specifically looking for the harps and
usually recognize them right away.

I've been asked a few times what they were, then asked to play it to prove
it was a musical instrument.

Better at least than poor Dave Caroll's broken-guitar saga!

Really? Any time I try to sand these ABS combs, it turns terribly wrong. If I
use a power sander, the friction causes the ABS to melt a bit and it turns
gooey. If I use hand sanding/filing, the finish is always a bit coarse and
unsatisfactory. Using a rotary tool to buff them also produces too much friction
heat and melts them a bit. Plus these injection molded plastic combs are full of
spaces, so if you sand too much (ie. like when trying to round of the ends), you
pop through into a empty chamber. The "solid" plastic combs are better (like on
a Huang Star Performer or a Suzuki Manji), but still I find that they don't tool
as nicely or easily as wood/laminate/composites.

I believe it is the one Jason Ricci started.. i guess it is pretty good
nowadaze.. I heard that Adam Gussow is on it now too
But when it first started it was just Jason , Brian Purdy and a bunch of
their friends that they actually knew in person, joking and chatting about
their pets.. and parties they had been to and such,, so I never went back.

Now I understand it IS more harmonicacentric, and perhaps a good resource,,
they are all great players.. but at first is was like sitting NEAR a table
of good players and eavesdropping while they talked about everything BUT
harmonicas.. as, indeed, who wants to talk shop after work,, not me either..

When I take a break from the bandstand, the band does not sit taking about
the last song or guitar string gauges.. we talk about girls ... or cars.. or
ATlantic City .. or girls .. or Vegas.. or girls..

So it is understandable that these guys who all have played together,
respected each othe.. would not talk about the 10 little holes in a
harmonica .. or what mike is best...

but now I have heard they are more informative,,, if anyone wants to know
something

Bob M... have you checked in there ? is it worthwhile. ?

Hi Richard,
Harmonica Space is another harmonica forum, and like most that are heavily
intereacted by diatonic players, there are lots of blues players, but also those
who play other stuff as well. The link is http://www.harmonicaspace.com. There's
some pretty good folks there too, some from Harp Talk, Harp-L and a number of
other forums as well.

So I was just sitting here wrapping up a custom golden melody for a customer and
listening to music on harmonicaspace, and I got to wondering what makes a good
player. Which I guess is a subjective question, since we all have different
tastes, likes and dislikes. But what is it that makes us consider someone a good
player? Is it because they can do all the licks and tricks, or do we also
consider the player who plays melodies to well known songs, who plays with
passion, clean notes, good intonation, etc. to be a good player. I've heard some
folks here on the list who play melodies to well known songs, or play campfire
songs, who I consider to be very good. They don't play with a lot of flash, but
the quality of their playing is really good. So I'm kind of curious as to what
others consider being a good player means.

Wood combs make me feel better about myself. When I am happy with myself, I'm
more relaxed. When i'm more relaxed, I play better. When I play better, my wife
is happier with me. When my wife is happier with me, I am more relaxed... etc...

Anyway, all kidding aside. I think that all tonal or vibration debates aside,
it's a nice feeling to play an instrument that is well crafted and which is the
right shape, feel, and design for you. You just play better on such an
instrument. To me, most plastic combs (ie. the injection molded kind) just seem
too "one size fits all". You can't really change them to suite your own mouth
and hands. With wood combs, I just take it over to the belt sander and round off
the ends to fit my cupped hands exactly. I pull out my little files, and round
the tines just so. I can pick a type of wood with more or less heft to it so
that the instrument has the proper feel in my hands and mouth. etc etc. You just
can't do any of that stuff with ie. a Spec 20 comb. In then end, when an
instrument is suited to YOU, you and the instrument have less of a gap, and the
music has to flow less far and through less obstacles to get out.

sound richer with more depth to me, plastic feels/sounds thin/simple. Take it

well, I see it this way.. the audience WILL hear a difference,, NO , Not in
the tone.. they will hear better music from YOU, if YOU like the tones you
hear thru your bones.. the more I like the sound of a harp the better I find
myself playing... and metal seems to me exciting and sharp , clear and
precise, well centered tones

Wood does seem warmer.. and plastic does not bother me.. it is good enough,
especially if the plates are tight and responsive.. like Delta Frosts.. or
Special 20s

but Metal combs put me in a different mood.. sort of like playing a
Telecaster does...

in any event, it is my belief that comb material affects the players
enthusiasm positively or negatively depending on ones tone preferences.. and
possibly subject to an individuals anatomical idiosynchrosies, ear
structure,, dental structure (or lack of it LOL) chest cavity capacity,,
oral capacity.. and OF COURSE >>>>>>TECHNIQUE

I'm 100% with Gant on this. You may not be able to detect the difference on
tape, the vibrations transmitted through the air, but you can absolutely tell
the difference between wood and plastic in your jaw, which is transmitting the
vibrations and is directly connected to your ears. Again, how we sound to
ourselves and how we sound on tape being different is part of that. Wood combs
sound richer with more depth to me, plastic feels/sounds thin/simple. Take it
easy, Skyak

yah got that right G.. about the sensitivity...like when you get a mustache
hair caught in the harp

or , in my case when the plastic surgeon resets your nose and sews your lips
and chin back together after doing a face plant on the highway off my harley
because a 16 year old pulled out of the gas station right in front of me.

having been there and done that... it give me pause to think of the horrors
our military endure when being treated for injuries from an IED

lets all go visit a VA hospital and play some harp for the guys and gals..
bring a smile and a few giveaway harmonicas.

it's Christmas time boys and girls and not everyone is merry... let's do
what we can... what we do best..----play the harmonica for someone who is
not paying you,, or judging you.. someone who is happy just to know you
appreciate what they do

"Whatsoever you do for the least of these, my brethren, you have done for
me"

This may be reaching a bit, but I think that the tonal difference IS
apparent to the player, not because of an aural response but a tactile
sensation. According to my theory, the vibrations emitted by the
harmonica are sensed by the most sensitive nerve cluster in the human
body--the mouth, lips and tongue. They are felt as much as heard and
the vibration corresponds to the accompanying aural stimulus. Thus, the
harp player both feels and hears the instrument without distinguishing
between the two stimulii. They arrive in the brain simultaneously and
are immediately combined to produce a single coherent sensation which we
designate as sound. But the sound an audience or recorder picks up is
much different (listen to yourself on tape--not the same you, is it?!)
because it lacks the tactile stimulus.

So it may very well be that wood combs produce a different vibration
than plastic or aluminum or brass and thus affect the aural stimulus.
Maybe only dogs can hear it.

Just a thought,
G

I'm hoping Marv and Roger Monroe will also come from Ohio (as they have for so
many years). I know Doug Puls and John Watts will be there, because
Coast-to-Coast Music has already committed to it. They have been wonderful
supporters for as long as I've been attending. They are also two of the nicest
people you'll meet.

harmonicas in their act. Judy has written an outstanding book on playing bass
harmonica. All has written two books on playing chord harmonicas. Both are
proficient on chromatic as well. All also plays some of the best diatonic
around. His "Steel Guitar Rag" using an XB-40 is unbelievable; I thought he was
playing a steel guitar! He also mixes in diatonic playing at various points in
their act. PRIMO!

I could listen to him play any time, any day. I've watched Chris and Phil
Caltabellotta strike up an informal jazz session in a corner. In short order,
there are a number of others who join in, improvising some of the best jazz
music you will ever hear. A world-class jazz musician!

great books available, such as "Masters of Blues Harp," "Blues and Rock
Harmonica," and "Irish and American Fiddle Tunes for Harmonica." I've listened
to some of his online stuff; the man can deliver on the diatonic! Since I've
been playing bluegrass a lot over the past few years, I'm really looking forward
to hearing Glenn in person!

also uses tremolos in his act. One year, he played a Chinese song about a loon
on a lake; you could close your eyes and "see" the scene with your ears! I swear
he made that bird fly right off the water musically! He usually plays with
backing tracks or with his daughter on keyboards. He also teaches at Turtle Bay
Music. A superb musician!

a quick Google search, I found a couple of YouTube videos of this European
Harmonica Champion. He plays both diatonic and chromatic. Check out his videos!
His Fox Chase is something else! (DANG! I just started listening to the YouTube
video of "Harmonica Virtuoso Chris Turner with Bosch Hurdy-Gurdy." The man can
really make a chromatic WAIL!)

after-hours on Saturday night. He plays some mean blues harp, but he graciously
provides accompaniment on guitar during jams throughout the Fest. He can make
anyone in any genre sound GREAT! Last year, we had an impromptu jam in the hotel
lobby, with Doug providing guitar, and everybody else taking a solo on "Help
Me." I particularly remember Bobby "Black Hat" Walters and Sandy Martin as a
couple of the participants. Bobby provided vocals and harp, and Sandy played
harp. Both of those gentlemen (along with Jackie Merritt) welcomed me into the
Tidewater blues harp scene a number of years ago, giving me opportunities to
join them for seminars with luminaries like Dennis Gruenling and Allen
Radcliffe-Holmes. It was good to see and hear the local guys again!

just can't be obtained until immediately prior to the Fest. However, Tom usually
has seminars scheduled with the headliners, if they feel comfortable doing it.
One of the regular repair seminars is usually hosted by Hohner Richmond. Sissy
Jones, one of the top Hohner reps and techs in Richmond, often comes to give a
seminar. Sissy is (somewhat) retired, but she still works for Hohner. I just
ordered some parts from Hohner, and spoke with her on the phone. She's also one
heck of a player of any Hohner harmonica!

sometime Sunday morning. It's a BLAST for a diatonic player like me!

hahaha I'm afraid to answer this for fear of starting up the old comb material
versus tone debate. I think the general consensus is that while the player may
notice some difference, the audience generally doesn't. Or something like that.
There have been a lot of different views about this and one of the major points
being that the comb doesn't have enough mass to it to really affect the sound. I
know that when I play a harp with metal versus wood or different woods I can
hear a difference. I know some customers have said that when they record they
can tell a difference. But I think a bigger change can be the result of cover
plates. I think more emphasis should be put on cover plate modifications and
aftermarket production for tonal improvements.

If this is the Chris Turner that I worked with in a harmonica duo from 1977-79,
he is indeed a remarkable musician. The time I spent with him broadened my
perspectives enormously. He has a unique musical personality, with influences
that include Sonny Terry, Stravinsky, and everything between, and he surprises
his audiences over and over again.

Didn't know Chris was performing beyond Providence RI, glad to hear that he is.
I assure everyone reading this that a performance by Chris is something you're
likely to remember for a long time.

Hello Chris.

Your woods are beautiful to behold.  However, in your opinion, do any of these
exotic woods give a harmonica a different character in sound?

On my "Blues Harmonicas in DC " post, I left out an important word. Bruce Ewan
is a Chicago BLUES player. He is not from Chicago and I'm sorry to have misled
anyone, especially DC native Bruce Ewan.
