I agree - just got back from S.F, New Years Eve thing - I went with my harps and
boom box with J.B. blasting away - people don't even get it - his music and
legacy.
I went to play his funky-ass music but most people don't even know how to dance
or want to anymore!
It was pretty sad - except that J.B.'s music will live on - he was a bad M.F.!!!
More white people got it than black people - that's scary!
Good God!!!

I heard him play ode to billy joe on the harp last week when it came thru my

To all List Members,

Here are a few guidelines for your posting on this
mailing list that will make your postings easier to
read and follow for all list members. Most of them
are basic email courtesy, but bear repeating for those
who are not familiar with them. It is not my intent
to create a lot of rules for the list, but rather to
make the reading of the postings and the digests
easier for everyone to follow.

1. Trim your replies. Many times we will see a post
in response to another one that quotes the entire
other message, or the entire thread with multiple
replies going back several days, or even an entire
digest! We really only need to see the portion of the
preceeding message or thread that applies directly to
your response. While you SHOULD include enough of the
previous message so that people will know what you are
talking about, usually a couple of sentences are
enough for people to understand the context of your
reply. Please avoid this "lazy quoting" habit so that
we may all follow threads more easily.

2. Bottom Quoting. The sentence or two that you
quote to give context to your reply should be ABOVE
your answer, not below it. This allows the reader to
get the context before reading your reply. Replies
are often hard to understand if they are read without
context.

3. Large Signature Files. Reasonably sized signature
files are fine, but we often see large paragraphs in
signature files that are totally unnecessary for a
post intended to be read on a public forum. The
"privacy" or "confidentiality" paragraphs that are
attached to some people's signatures are an example.
This often means that the signature is larger than the
entire message. Please trim your large signature
files to a few lines with your basic contact
information, url, etc.

4. Subject Titles. Subject titles should be relevent
to the topic being discussed in the post. Many times
a discussion will drift far away from the original
topic. If the subject line on your reply no longer
reflects the content of the post, the subject line
should be changed when you reply. A transition can be
signaled to others by changing subject and referring
to the old subject, like this: "New Subject (was Old
Subject)". After a few posts on the new topic the
"was old subject" can be dropped, leaving an
appropriate subject line for the new thread.

5. Please turn OFF the HTML on the email you send to the list. Many mail
readers don't convert it so that people wind up with a bunch of code on their
screen and whatever message you were trying to send gets lost in the code.
Also, many of our non US members pay for their email by the KB, and this type of
code costs them money to download something they can't read. Please be
considerate and just send your messages in plain text.

If we all examine our posting habits and make these
small adjustments, it will make reading the postings
and digests far more "user friendly" for everyone.
Thank you for your attention!

Kim;
I totally agree, however I would add that I think the public or media whatever
tend to "talk up" the white harp players more than the black ones - I guess they
figure it's unique for a white guy to have some soul!LOL
Anyway, I decided last night to go down to the Embarcadero in S.F. with a boom
box and Mr. Brown and just wailed. It was amazing to me how many people have
lost their groove - ;how can you not want to dance - just a little - when you
hear J.B. doing "Sex Machine"?
I think I have found my second job - playing to J.B.'s funky stuff at the train
station! I made $50 in about an hour last night!
I would recommend every harp player out there to try playing with the
"Godfather" - not his top 40 stuff but the real funky stuff - he was a Master.
If nothing else you will get rhythm!
Shawn

Hi,

I only have two Guyger CDs:
Past Life Blues, and
Deep in the Blues (with Paul Oscher also on harp)

Both are stellar efforts with deep, deep blues in
both. Great harp.

I don't know if it is still around but Guygers' "Live at the Dinosaur"
is good. I really liked the way he mellowed the Billy Boy Arnold's
tune "I Wish You Would". Quite a contrast to Lester Butler's in your
face version which I also like.

  bluesdawgie,

I just was tossin a little leavening on the levee mice
elf.... and ya never know, y'all could be takin home some serious money for
all I know !
the money bands get around here is pitiful nowadaze, we were making as much
and up to twice as much 20 years ago, and each dollar bought about 3 times
as much, in rent, food, gas, liquour, whatever,
but thanks for the good wishes

yea, I was a full time bass player, people have stopped running for the door
when I unsheath the sax, and, people say I hope you brought your harps, I
can cover the guitar player if he is late, play a little banjo.. and am
getting into flute, ,, I can do some simple keyboards too... I have been
paid money for all but the banjo and the flute ..........

I do not sing....when you do not sing, you gotta play a couple instruments
to justify a place on the bandstand, or play your A double S off on one of
them............or starve

my ideal band nowadaze would not need any mikes !!

amd thats from a guy who had to buy a van and take the seats out to haul his
bass rig some years back,

Mike, I hope your gig went wellin NC on New Years!
Mike has a great website with pictures. I would go to nazharp.com
and you can find these pictures. Paul Oscher does as well. I am
betting every white harmonica player who has a website will have
pictures playing with famous and not so famous black performers.

Hi Hank,

Yeah, I like del Junco a lot although I just heard him for the first
time recently. I just recently aquired Blues Mongrel and I have
become obsessed with the song "You Got to Run Me Down" which I have
set up to repeate on my CD player on several occasions and just
listened carefully for hours. It's on this point that I'm wondering
if you can help me out. There is a line of vocals in this song that
I can't make out and I thought you might be able to figure it out.
Here's what I'm talking about:

You got to run me down,
you got to run me down,
If you want to cantact me, ou got to run me down,

second vers,

third verse,
then...

Somthing, Somthing, Something,
Yeah, Yeah, that old someting, something,
If you want, to make love, you got to run me down! Look out!

So what's he saying at that point? I can't figure it out. I'd also
like to know who wrote this song.

Apart from that, the harp solo on this song is just increadeble. He
really is a very tallented player and very origional as well.

Let me know if you can figure out those lyrics. You or anybody else.
Thanks.

  I ain't too young......

back around 1970....the new civil rights laws were in place, but not
everyone was on the same page yet (if they even are now, but at
least now they keep it more to themselves)...
anyway, I was a bass player in a Motown type "Revue" which is a
show with several featured singers, back-up female vocal trio,
dancers, a baggy pants comedian, and so on , with a James Brown
sized band.. sort of like Ike and Tinas Revue..
Everybody but me had dark skin.
When the bus would stop at a "Soul Food" eatery, I would be asked to
eat in the kitchen by the restaurant management...( the band would
give them an argument,: he's one of us, he's in the band "
restaurant owner: "He don't LOOK like one of us, so he eat in the
back" ).
I would accede in the interests of getting the food served without
further delay.
For someone whose parents raised him without prejudice, but who did
go to school during segregation, it was .....I dunno..
enlightening ? to be told to use the back door.
Did not bother me a whole lot,, but then again, it was not
everywhere, nor my whole life..
and I will be damned (and probably would be) if I ever want to
treat anyone else like that

My first band had a great black singer.
The rest of us were white.
We played all black clubs from time to time, as
well as all white.
I was ALWAYS treated Great in the black clubs, but
sometimes our singer was not treated well in the
white clubs.
We especially had problems with the late night
eateries not wanting him to come in with us.
We wouldn't eat there either, and ate a lot of
burgers in the car.
Sometime later he moved on, and we ask a young
black guy to join us.
His father wouldn't allow him to do so, because we
were white!!!!!

harps drill out the reedplates for screws.....do you
use something like a mini(tabletop)drill press? will
they work with such small bits that are needed?a
rotary(dremel style)dril press/workstation..seems i
read somewhere they are not all that great when being
very precise is a necessity. or,do you just freehand
it? thanx,harpo

I use a round file to enlarge the hole that already is there. I guess
you call the file a needle file. I got mine from F.& R. Farrell a few
years ago. You could probably pick up a set of needle files at a good
hardware store.

I've seen Carlos a couple of times live. He's one of the many fine
harp players we have up here in Toronto (Mark Stafford, Dave Rotundo,
Jerome Godboo, Paul Reddick are a few others). Carlos certainly is
amazing. He can take a blues standard and put his own twist on it.
Some of his stuff can be a little far out for my tastes, though.
Having said that, he does an amazing solo version of "Another Man Done
Gone Down". I think he uses a 12 hole harmonica for that one. If you
can catch him live, it's well worth it.

Brother Hank,

I appreciate Carlos del Junco as well. Sorry to say that I've only met him
through his work. And, like you, find a wonderful story told in his own
particular style. His solo of "Nine Below Zero" is a favorite and a piece I
would definitely like to be able to perform. (Low Eb!)
His cd cover is especially helpful in providing a wide range of
information.

Be Blues,

Suave Blues Man

You need to see Mike Hardy in Grand Bay. I hope he does not mind me giving his
email.
Contact him at harp2please@...
Mike is the greatest Harp Advocate in South Alabama and a heck of a Harp player
to boot.

Has anyone put their music on myspace or youtube? I'd really like to hear some
of you guys get down on a tin sandwich. I put a few songs on myspace, but I
haven't yet mastered my recording technique.
