To all List Members,

Here are a few guidelines for your posting on this
mailing list that will make your postings easier to
read and follow for all list members. Most of them
are basic email courtesy, but bear repeating for those
who are not familiar with them. It is not my intent
to create a lot of rules for the list, but rather to
make the reading of the postings and the digests
easier for everyone to follow.

1. Trim your replies. Many times we will see a post
in response to another one that quotes the entire
other message, or the entire thread with multiple
replies going back several days, or even an entire
digest! We really only need to see the portion of the
preceeding message or thread that applies directly to
your response. While you SHOULD include enough of the
previous message so that people will know what you are
talking about, usually a couple of sentences are
enough for people to understand the context of your
reply. Please avoid this "lazy quoting" habit so that
we may all follow threads more easily.

2. Bottom Quoting. The sentence or two that you
quote to give context to your reply should be ABOVE
your answer, not below it. This allows the reader to
get the context before reading your reply. Replies
are often hard to understand if they are read without
context.

3. Large Signature Files. Reasonably sized signature
files are fine, but we often see large paragraphs in
signature files that are totally unnecessary for a
post intended to be read on a public forum. The
"privacy" or "confidentiality" paragraphs that are
attached to some people's signatures are an example.
This often means that the signature is larger than the
entire message. Please trim your large signature
files to a few lines with your basic contact
information, url, etc.

4. Subject Titles. Subject titles should be relevent
to the topic being discussed in the post. Many times
a discussion will drift far away from the original
topic. If the subject line on your reply no longer
reflects the content of the post, the subject line
should be changed when you reply. A transition can be
signaled to others by changing subject and referring
to the old subject, like this: "New Subject (was Old
Subject)". After a few posts on the new topic the
"was old subject" can be dropped, leaving an
appropriate subject line for the new thread.

5. Please turn OFF the HTML on the email you send to the list. Many mail
readers don't convert it so that people wind up with a bunch of code on their
screen and whatever message you were trying to send gets lost in the code.
Also, many of our non US members pay for their email by the KB, and this type of
code costs them money to download something they can't read. Please be
considerate and just send your messages in plain text.

If we all examine our posting habits and make these
small adjustments, it will make reading the postings
and digests far more "user friendly" for everyone.
Thank you for your attention!

Subject: New solo piece on SBS 365 at hunterharp.com

Hi all,

I recorded an improvisation on a Hohner model 365 with SBS (Steve Baker System)
tuning. You can find it at:
http://www.hunterharp.com/sbs365-an-original-solo-piece/

I find the SBS tuning inspiring for certain chords of chord work, and it can
play a lead when you need it to, though this particular 365 is a pretty leaky
harp compared to any of my regular diatonics.

This piece was recorded live on my Zoom H4. The harmonica is played without any
amplification or FX, and the recording is unedited.

It might be a tube. It might be the way you're setting the amp up. The 5 watt
Crates have 3 controls: gain, volume, tone. High gain = high distortion. Are
you changing settings frequently? For high volume without high distortion, keep
the gain low and turn up the volume. Keep the tone on the bass-y side too for
most applications.

If that doesn't do it, try replacing the tubes, then take the amp to an amp
tech.

Does this amp happen to have an effects loop? Many brands have had problems with
those jacks and the symptoms are exactly what you describe. To check, plug a
known good shielded cable from the output to the input, just like you were
inserting an effects box, but you are only bypassing the switched jack(the one
that passes the signal from the pre-amp section to the power amp section when
nothing is inserted). If that works you might get away with just spraying some
silicone cleaner or De-Oxit into the jack and/or onto a plug and inserting it
several times to clean the contacts. At worst, the jack will have to be
replaced. Not a big deal.

Bill, take another look at the amp. My Crate VC508 has a line-out jack that
doubles as an FX loop. If yours has a line-out jack (it'll be the only other
jack besides the input jack) then it's probably set up as an FX loop too, in
which case Walter's advice might do the job. Dirty contacts could certainly
produce the kind of intermittent problem you describe. And anyone who owns an
amp should have a can of spray contact cleaner in the house.

Just wanted to alert Harp-Talkers to a new release, with accompanying (free)
video. Via the magic of overdubs there are ten different harps used on this:
diatonics, chromatics, whole-tone, polyphonia, slide-harp, extreme-bender and
double-octave bass harp.

"Nagasaki From Uranus," as by the Tom Ball Harmonica Orchestra. Here's the link
to the video. Turn up the volume! :-)

Also downloadable through all the usual outlets. Really fun project! Any

7th HARMONICA MASTERS WORKSHOPS
November 2-6, 2011
Trossingen, GERMANY

Four days of classes, sessions and concerts for diatonic and chromatic
harmonica on the new campus at the former Hohner factory site,
situated in the heart of the town of Trossingen in Germany's beautiful
Black Forest region and featuring:

* Steve Baker (diatonic harp)
* David Barrett (diatonic harp)
* Hermine Deurloo (jazz chromatic)
* Joe Filisko (diatonic harp)
* Eric Noden (guitar)

The Harmonica Masters Workshops were initiated in 2003 by Steve Baker in
cooperation with the town of Trossingen and the
Hohner Musical Instrument company. Conceived as a high-end educational
event for blues and jazz harmonica, featuring world
class instructors and a full supporting program of sessions and
concerts, they were an immediate success and have subsequently
become an annual fixture in Trossingen, except in 2005 and 2009, when
the town hosted the World Harmonica Festival.

Students at this truly international gathering make up a remarkable
cross-section of European harmonica afficionados, plus visitors from
North America and beyond. Despite the impressive roster of instructors,
the event is by no means directed exclusively at advanced
players, there is plenty for intermediate players here too. As well as
offering a great learning experience, the Harmonica Masters Workshops
also provide the opportunity to get to know fellow hamonica enthusiasts
from many different countries, to meet old friends and make new
ones. We look forward to welcoming you to the Harmonica Masters
Workshops 2011!

* Steve Baker (diatonic harp)
* David Barrett (diatonic harp)
* Hermine Deurloo (jazz chromatic)
* Joe Filisko (diatonic harp)
* Eric Noden (guitar)

Is it safe to rinse a CX12 after extended playing? Is it safe to dry with a blow
dryer at low heat?

ahhh, i don't like the idea of dousing the flaps (valves) with water. maybe
if it's distilled water so that minerals don't dry in there causing the
valves to stick to the reedplate

blow drier at low heat depends on the manufacturer's idea of what 'low' is.
keep it at a distance, at least a foot away. blow so that the wind is not
lifting the flaps. heat could cause them to curl

maybe just take out the comb assembly, and then wash the cover and slide as
vigorously as you want, and only wipe down the mouthpiece of the comb
assembly.

stay well,

Marvin, go on to You Tube, and type in "cx-12" there's a video on how to
disassemble it there, (their really simple to pull apart, and put back
together), no sound but good anyway. DO NOT USE A DRYER on any harp with
wind savers (valves) EVER! Tap it dry, and let it air dry, and reassemble.

All the best,

Hey Bill! Probably a good point about water quality. I live where the tap
water is very pure, so never think about BAD water.
Good point to use distilled H2O if you live in the city where water is
"iffy".

hello. I had few years ago 2 CX-12 chroms. I.M.H.O. this model is one of the
best engineered model ever built, maybe second after CBH model.

is very easy to take it apart and clean it ! in order to clean it, I used only a
solution made out of normal water and some detergent. I left the plastic parts
and the slide in the water for 10 minutes, clean it with a mild tooth brush,
give it a good rinse in moderate hot water and left it to dry.

I cleaned the valves IZOPROPILIC ALCOHOOL, with the help of some strips of
paper... very easy job and the alcohool dried fast...

after all the parts dried completely, I put them together and I use a VERY, VERY
small amount of MEDICINAL PARAFIN OIL to lubricate the slide.

after that the CX-12 worked like a dream...

hope these infos will be good for all of you... cheers

Subject: Marine Band Quality History

Recently I found a source for brand new (never used) yet quite old (made a long
time ago) Harmonicas. I bought several Marine Bands in various keys which I
didnt have yet. I plan on customizing these with screws and sealed combs to
start and maybe some hand work on the reeds. They seem like really nice
instruments, and it is quite obvious that they were never played before I got
them. They play pretty well but seem like they need some breaking in, and they
have a fair amount of sharp(ish) edges especially compared to the Lee Oskars
that I usually play. But I want to migrate to customized MBs anyway.

Ive heard a lot of folklore about marine band quality being particularly bad at
various unspecified periods. These harps are cardboard box models, and some of
them seem even old in that cetegory because the address on the back of the box
doesn't have a zip code. On one of them the plating on the cover was checking
and peeling a little.

Is there any way to date these? And are ther any particular problems that I
should be aware of when I go through them? I am not into overblowing yet, but I
do plan on tuning and gaping the reeds.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: [HarpTalk] Marine Band Quality History
Recently I found a source for brand new (never used) yet quite old (made a
long time ago) Harmonicas. I bought several Marine Bands in various keys
which I didnt have yet. I plan on customizing these with screws and sealed
combs to start and maybe some hand work on the reeds. They seem like really
nice instruments, and it is quite obvious that they were never played before
I got them. They play pretty well but seem like they need some breaking in,
and they have a fair amount of sharp(ish) edges especially compared to the
Lee Oskars that I usually play. But I want to migrate to customized MBs
anyway.
Ive heard a lot of folklore about marine band quality being particularly
bad at various unspecified periods. These harps are cardboard box models,
and some of them seem even old in that cetegory because the address on the
back of the box doesn't have a zip code. On one of them the plating on the
cover was checking and peeling a little.

Hello try "The Marine Band Field Spotter's Guide" @ http://rsleigh.com/
You can date them to an "era" not so much a year.

Good luck

hello... I'm not an expert in this category, but what I can tell you is this...

back in 1995, when I first start studying harmonica, my first professional
harmonica was a Marine Band(in D). In those days, here in Romania was pretty
hard to buy good quality harmonicas in all the keys... right now the situation
is pretty much the same... unfortunatelly...

as much as I remember, it was a very fine instrument. as a beginner, I
"distroyed" it pretty fast, because I didn't know how to breath properly thru a
harmonica... and I pushed the reeds very agresive...

anyway... few years later, in 2001-2002 I think... , I bought another Marine
Band in the same key(D) and the quality of the reeds were IMHO a disaster ! I
think the brass alloy of the reeds was totally different as much as I can
remember... the reeds were extremelly rigid, hard to bend and the harmonica
leaked a lot of air... I sold it to another person as fast as I can and I was
lucky enough to find SPECIAL 20 harps...

since then these are my weapons of choice and I'm very pleased with them...

few months ago, I manage to buy from ebay some NOS Marine Band harps in an
amazing condition. they looked like were kept in some kind of time capsule.
pristine condition. they came in cardboard boxes and I think were made back in
the 70's...?????

I modified them on screws and also made some fine tunning and the result is IMHO
pretty spectacular. these harps sounds amazing ! loud, full, brilliant tone...
very easy to bend the reeds...

now, back to the main subject of this message...

as much as I read and heard ... Marine Band harps suffered along the time all
sorts of modifications, especially in the BRASS ALLOY section of the reeds and
the reedplates...

a friend of mine that lives in Germany and is a very skilled harmonica player
told me that he talked with some guys from Hohner and they told him that for
some economy reasons, the brass alloy for reeds was modified with a cheaper
one... and that was a disaster... from some unofficial sources, my friend told
me that Hohner had a serious problem in selling those Marine Bands... and their
image as a leading harmonica company suffered a lot !

I really don't know how much truth is behind all these stories... but as much as
I can tell you, I noticed that the quality of some recent Marine Bands was poor
compared to the harmonicas from the past...

some people complained about the same problems with the LEE OSKAR harmonias made
in the recent years... since I don't use Lee Oskar harps I don't know what to
say...

I think it'll be better if some of the best harmonica customizers from all
around the world will post some reviews about this subject...

I don't know why, but when we talk about harmonicas, the amount of informations
about the quality and the different years of production is amazingly thin...
compared with the wealth of infos available when we're talking about guitars...
I DON'T KNOW WHY THERE'RE NOT MORE INFOS AVAILABLE...???

what I can tell you, based on my experience, is this: compared to the normal
MARINE BAND model, the MARINE BAND DELUXE model is a TOP OF THE LINE instrument,
EXTREMELLY WELL BUILT... I think this model is a recreation of the sound of the
models from the past....

many people(included here is my friend SUGAR BLUE !!!) told me that creating
this model, is maybe one of the most inteligent choices made by the Hohner
company in order to regain some of their status on today's market...

maybe other people will have different opinions... I don't know... all I know is
that I bought already 6 Marine Band Deluxe and I'm very happy about it...

if any real profesionals of the harmonica customizing business is reading these
posts here, please write some pertinent coments about this subject !!!

and if some articles about this subject are already available somewhere on the
internet, please post here some links...

thanks a lot. and I hope my post here will be of some kind of help for the rest
of you harp players...

best regards, Marcian(from Romania - Europe)

My latest release "2 Days Out" is officially on the first ballot for the
54th Grammy awards.

This jazz CD project was recorded, mixed and mastered right here in Music
City by Nashville engineers with Nashville musicians. I think it once again
shows that we certainly have some of the best and brightest in the music
industry. I am really proud to live and work here!

"2 Days Out" can be found on the Grammy ballot in Field 10 - Jazz. It is
nominated in two categories:

Category #32 - Best Jazz Instrumental CD (entry 109 on the listing ballot)
and

Category #30 - Best Improvised Jazz Solo for "There Is No Greater Love"
(entry 118 on the listing ballot.)

If you are a voting member of NARAS, or know of someone who is, I would
appreciate your consideration for these prestigious awards. Thanks to all of
you for your support. Your interest in my music along with the support of
jazz radio on this CD, has created quite a buzz for this project. I'm really
honored to have a first ballot Grammy Nomination. To hear samples from "2
Days Out" and a full length version of "There Is No Greater Love" follow
