When I first heard "Dogtown," I didn't care for it! But this song is a
masterpiece! It tells the story of a small town, where all the men go off to
sea, and most of them don't return! I think the widow had no choice but to
have the dog for a husband, or else she would die of loneliness! At the
beginning of the song, she was surprised that her husband had these plans,
that he never mentioned, and she was comforted by her dog, as most of the
women in that town! It probably is a true story, and it is a "story," which
Harry was great at writing! He wrote story songs, and this song told a great
story! It also has it's peaks, and valleys, which adds to the complexity!
Listen to the song, and the lyrics, and listen carefully to the drums! Your
stomach will turn, but only because you'll realize how great this song
really is!
And as far as the different versions, I told you I had only listened to the
C.D. once! After hearing it several times, I now agree that the different
versions are a good thing, because coincidently, in my acting class, I did a
monologue, and the teacher had me go from love to hate, back and forth
throughout the monologue. It made me think of the C.D., and the different
versions, just as the different ways to perform the monologue! I've never
done studio work, but I'm sure it is the same! You might sing a song one
way, and then decide to change the chorus, or the bridge, or slow the tempo,
etc.! I take back what I said, and once again, I think all the songs on the
album are great! I never heard "Remember when the music," and that is a
great song! I carry a walkman every time I leave my house, and I always
carry 2 of Harry's tapes. It's nice to have a bigger selection, because I
can switch off, and every one of them has their merits! But most importantly
is Harry's voice! Noone has a voice like him, and anything he sings sounds
so smooth, even the "Dogtown," and "Sniper" songs! Harry has the kind of
voice that you never get tired of! It is very distinctive, and noone will
ever be able to sing the way he did!
By the way, I sang "Cats in the Cradle" today in my music class, and I
screwed up "royally!" The teacher wouldn't let me start over, so I'll have
to wait until the final, and hopefully do it right!
