By the way, I forgot to mention the name of our collaboration - it's under
the name "Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints" which is a rather silly
combination of our two names...

Hey HInc fans!
I was just reminded that I didn't make a post about my most recent
Songfight entry, "Goodbye Monster" ! It's a collaboration with London's
own Johnny Cashpoint and can be heard here:
http://www.songfight.org/green/
Go check it out and vote for your favorite song while you're at it!
Our entry is a somewhat different take on the title...
Also, big news on the "recorded output" front! The new "single" from
Heuristics Inc. is now available... it's the "anemone" remix album! Check

This is the end result of the "anemone" project, where lots of different
artists remixed my ambient track and made some very cool songs using the
materials! It can be purchased "at cost" through the website, and also I
have a few copies here if you happen to see me around.

Announcing a new Heuristics Inc. improvisation.
"Senzeni Na," recorded late at night on Wednesday. Check out the website

My blog is now posted right on my homepage. The first few lines of it,
anyway. It's now set up so that people can leave comments to the blog
posts as well as to songs. I rewrote all this software myself, so let me
know if I ever break it :)
Also, some of you may not know about the website
http://www.stripcreator.com . It's a "comic" creation site by Brad of
Brad Sucks fame. Lately I've been making some comics:

It's pretty fun. Anybody can go there and make comics. Check it out!

You may have seen it on the "song info" pages... now you can see it in the
blog too! Woo! Exciting! Ok, maybe not.
I have been becoming underwhelmed by the blogging system of blogger.com
and decided to write my own blogger. So I took the system I'd written for
song info comments and modified it into a blogging system that allows
visitors to the site to leave comments on my ramblings.
Check it out... the toolbar "bill's rant" link now points to the new
system's "recent" page, where you can see my 5 latest posts and click on
them to see the comments. From any blog page you can click on the top bar
to see that page, the most recent posts in table "summary" form, or even
all blogs ever posted!
Here's a direct link to the main "blog" page:
http://www.heuristicsinc.com/cgi-bin/showblog.pl?recent=5&first=1
The most recent one will also appear on the front page eventually. I know
that many visitors to the page have never really looked at the blog page,
so I'd like to make it more prominent.

I'm cleaning out the hard drive at home... I've had a few tracks laying
around that have been more or less completed but hadn't gotten around to
"releasing" them yet. So the current burst of activity at HIncHQ
continues with:
"with you there to guide me"

A "collaboration" between Heuristics Inc. and Mobile Sound Unit. MSU
created an AudioMulch document, HInc took it and replaced all the loops
and sounds in it, and modified it to fit the new sounds. All loops by
Heuristics Inc. Mix by HInc and MSU.
The end result is a track that seems to combine the "sound" of HInc with
the "sound" of MSU. It's different!

I've just put the finishing touches on my newest remix. It's a song by a
German band called "Siren on Mars" ... which, unfortunately, is no more.
However, their legacy lives on. "Room Without a View (Claustrophobic

Also, the "replacement" band is now called "Nutrient" and lives at

Check them out as well... they have a male vocalist and some different
bandmembers now, but their music is still cool!

Announcing the first Heuristics Inc. release of 2004! I just finished my
remix of the excellent Starfinger rap masterpiece "More Than Soup"! For

Happy New Year to all!
In keeping with the new year I am revealing my newest website feature, a
set of scripts to add comments to the songs! Now you can see what people
have said about songs, and even leave your own thoughts, right on the
"song info" pages. For an example, check out the top track:
http://www.heuristicsinc.com/cgi-bin/buildpage.pl?title=OneSided+(Finale)&info=1
All "song info" pages will now have their very own comment list.
Let me know what you think of this feature... and you can also let me know
what you think of the songs!

Ok, goth industrial, for the genre-heads out there.
This week's Songfight has an entry by Heuristics Inc. entitled "Violet
Wants It Her Way." It's getting good reviews so far on the boards.
I'm really happy with how this song turned out... go check out the
fight; it's absolutely huge, with 25 songs; and vote for your favorite!
Starfinger is also in this fight.
Also while you're there you owe it to yourself to listen to last
week's "More Than Soup" by Starfinger, which won the fight by a LARGE
margin :) It's amazing!

This week Craig, the artist formerly known as CRT, now Dr. Kong Balong,
and Heuristics Inc., who has kept this name since 1992, teamed up once
again as the electronic supergroup Brainpipe. This week we submitted an
entry for Songfight's Blue fight, "Angry All Over" :
http://www.songfight.org/blue/
(the blue comes in because this week the songfight powers-that-be decided
to have two different fights, each with its own title... the other was
green, "Field Day").
For this collaboration Craig wrote lyrics and sang vocals, then sent them
to me, and I put music to them. I think this style of song creation
yielded cool and interesting results. Go check it out, and vote for your
favorite amongst the "AAO" entries!

Well, I wasn't, actually... I played from a couple minutes after 10 to

For those who might have missed the concert the other night... and I know
it was most of you, shame on you :) I recorded the results of both my and

aren't publicly linked at this time, but you can hear them at the

Here's info on the recordings:

time 17:08
1. ...living in the basement (algorythm track)

3. untitled in-progress flp8 track
4. er-1 improv
Set 2 - Heuristics Inc.
http://media.heuristicsinc.com/livemixes/HInc-LiveSet7Oct2003-part2.mp3
time 12:25
1. untitled in-progress germ track
2. Party Mix (remix of a CRT tune)
3. ambient virus improv
Set 3 - Mobile Sound Unit
http://media.heuristicsinc.com/livemixes/MSU-LiveSet7Oct2003.mp3
time 38:09
No idea what he played :)
I had a lot of technical problems. But I'm not sure exactly how many of
them show up on the recording. Most of my tracks are in-progress works,
meaning that they're still pretty rough. But it was fun anyway. If you
want to try a fun activity you can try to count the errors, haha, just
kidding.
Total filesize is 61.9 mb. Concert fits on a CD, at around 67:43.

Tonight, Tuesday 7 Oct, I will be doing a live concert streamed over the
internet. I will be doing a set and Mobile Sound Unit will do one. We
are planning to start streaming at 10PM Eastern, perhaps for an hour each,
maybe less. I think I will probably go on first at 10PM. You can listen
in for free at:
http://www.tapegerm.com:8000
All you will need is an audio player that can play streamed mp3s,
e.g. winamp, musicmatch, real, etc.
Sorry about the late notice. I had some computer difficulties and wasn't
sure if I'd be able to participate until yesterday. Luckily I've found a
workaround for this! Come and check it out if you've got the time.

Such a bizarre title. Anyway, I forgot to mention that I have another
entry in SF this week. I'm taking a break for a little while from SF
though so nothing more to keep up with for the moment. Check HMA out
for now at:
http://www.songfight.org
Here are my lyrics:
he remembers the day that you got him
your anthropomorphic servant
he's a happy machine
he exists to serve you
you leave him such a mess
he thinks he deserves you
he's a happy machine
he works all day and night
just loving to pick up
everything in sight
then one day you left something on the stairs
gyros not what they used to be
and you know his navigation's not right
and he fell so heavily
he's a broken machine
his ankle's been shattered
can't work any more
his self-worth is scattered
the replacement parts are too expensive
he's an old model anyway
so now he sits alone in the closet
can't move, he'd just be in the way
now he's a sad machine
because of the cost
for want of an ankle
a whole being was lost
enjoy the song... vote for your favorite!

Last week's HInc entry, "spacecadet," for the Songfight garnered 2 votes,
which is pretty good since most reviewers didn't like it :) By far the
most common complaint was not being able to hear/understand the
vocals. So I re-mixed it.... if anyone wants to hear the redone version,
check it out here:
http://media.heuristicsinc.com/progress/HeuristicsInc-spacecadet.mp3
As a sidenote, HInc's Brainpipe-bandmate CRT also did a "Space
Cadet" under his vocal alias Starfinger. How's that for confusing, 4 band
names in the same sentence! Between only two people, no less. Anyway,
the Starfinger tune got 7 votes... rock on CRT!
Now on to this week!
We've both entered again this week. My song "ACCELERATOR!" is different
from anything I've done before. Note how I went from all lowercase to all
caps - it's a stylistic shift! I sing and stuff, again, and this time you
should be able to understand the words... Here's a link:
http://www.songfight.org
...and the words, for your perusal. It's about driving in Maryland. We
all love it, for sure.

Anyway, just to keep people on their toes, I recorded a completely
different kind of song for songfight this week. It's a spacy improvised

the first time I've recorded a song where I sang lyrics that I wrote, so
it's some sort of landmark date. I crave feedback on this, so drop me a
line publicly or privately and let me know what you think of it.

As before, if you plan to vote, please check out the other entries as
well!
Here are the lyrics:
space between dark places
space between beats
space between our faces
space between meets
i'm making first contact
with the alien
learning to interact
with you

impulse to see it tried on him personally." - A. Lincoln
P.S. What are the rules for SongFight? I don't see a FAQ on their page.
Is there a limit on song length, prohibition on profanity, etc? What are
the rules?

Hey Bill,
Cool mix. That Prelinger stuff is great. I listened to several of the
other mixes + yours. I was willing to give the Milwaukee Youth Center
Choir my vote if it turned out to be a bunch of cute kids trying to win
a prize or something like that, but it wasn't so you got my vote. I
guess I'm not totally unbiased, though. :)

This week Heuristics Inc. entered the Songfight!
Songfight is an internet site where the Fightmasters announce a song
title at the beginning of the week. Entrants have one week to write,
compose, and record a song using that title, and then websurfers can
come, listen to the songs, and vote for their favorite. This week's
title is "What We Need More Of Is Science."
For the songfight this week I pulled some samples from an old 50's
teen-social-consciousness film called "Why Study Science?" and used
some Tapegerm loops to make a song... if you want, go check it out at:
http://www.songfight.org/
Please, if you go to vote, listen to the other songs too :)

Well, of course. Or something. Thanks!
But I do have a pile of copies of both CDs at my house now. And how cool
is that!
That album cover picture was done using the Gimp from a couple of photos I
took with my PDA camera ... fun toy.

Love the album cover, Bill. Not as good as the brain,
of course. ;-)
