Fellow web scribblers,
some of you have expressed interest in that hip-hop
travel log that came out called "Where You're At." It
just so happens I was sent the book for review on my
site. I asked the pr guy if he would like me to
forward his info to the group. He said sure.
So if you want to receive a promo copy of the book,

As you already know, the long underground mixtape
industry has hit the mainstream in the last two years.
Some of the best material that's been coming out from
rap artists is trapped on mixtapes, unable to be
officially released because of sample clearances
(think Ghostface and Jadakiss). Even though the
illegal mixes are gaining in popularity and

Thanks for the invite and heads up about the group.
Mine is not truly a hip hop blog, at least it wasn't started as
one...but as the time goes on it seems to be transforming into one
more and more.
Seriously thinking about starting a seperate blog from my personal one
for all the hip hop related musings...
Anyway, my name is Tiffany, I am a former sports reporter turned
internet enthusiasts turned techno-geek. I write whatever comes to
mind so don't look for a constant theme on my site ;-)
Does anyone know anything about the folks who run

Popmatters only really has deadlines for it's columns that I know of - otherwise their really open to writers over there with clever ideas too. I still write for them - well I'm supposed to write features - just haven't had time lately.

Some of us on the list write reviews and articles for small magazines
off and online. Many of you do it for free, hoping to just exercise
your writing, build your portfolio, and gain exposure.
One site that can really help you with this is Blogcritics.org. They
will accept you as a member as long as you have your own weblog. You
can write short blurbs, or long well thought out rants. You can post
several times a day, or hardly at all (like me). There's set
dealines, something I remember that made Lynne leave
popmatters.
The best thing about Blogcritics is that if you submit a well
written, timely review of an album they will place it on half dozen
news sites through a partnership they have with Advance networks.
Advance sites include NJ.com, Mlive.com, cleveland.com,
OregonLive.com PennLive.com MassLive.com, NOLA.com, SILive.com,
Syracuse.com, al.com.
This means your critique of Young Buck's album could ended up being
read by hundreds of thousands. Good stuff right?
Plus, plus, plus they REALLY need more reviews of hip-hop, R&B, and
urban music in general.
Sign up here: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2004/07/29/125146.php
And um...no one asked or paid me to post this or anything. Just
trying to spread a good thing.
Can you please explain "some guys to participate (no homo)"
Is this only for guys and not girls?
What do you mean by no homo? Homosapiens? What?
Thanks
Lynne

Blogcritics.org works pretty well for exposure. Since I actually

And the easy to obtain freebies are a bonus...makes it much easier to

When the group was first started I had moderation turned on. I had to
review each message before it was sent to the rest of the group,
which slowed down discussions and made this place a burden on my time.
I switched the moderation off, but it only seemed to take effect for
users who signed up afterward. Older users still were getting their
messages sent to me for review.
So just now I took the ten minutes needed to manually change all of
the older members status to unmoderated. Hopefully that will save me
tenfold the amount of time later and make this group more live.

Lately I've been using less "search" and more
"discovery" when getting things to write about. On of
the tools I use for discovering new things on the web
has been Google Alerts.
When it first started the service was pretty
primitive. Google emailed me updates on pages that
matched my search terms and that was it. Now they have
a new interface that lets you do a lot more with the
service.
I won't explain it all, just peep it here:
http://www.google.com/alerts
One trick of the trade is to subscribe to a search of
the pages thaty link to your favorite websites. You'll
end up finding related pages that way. For example,
try subscribing to this search link:sohh.com
I've found a couple of hip-hop news related websites
that way.

Hey guys,
as bloggers we probably do 20 times the amount of
searches as the average web user. I'm a Google fanatic
and use it almost exclusively.
However I've toyed around with Amazon's A9.com web
search and I've been impressed with some of the
personalization features. Why I don't use it more? I
don't know.
Now they've rolled out some new features and a better
interface. It's built on top of Google so I'm getting
the same core search results. Plus more.
-I think I'm going to switch.

Hi Everyone,
I recently joined the group and I've been quietly enjoying the
messages. Just wanted to send a big-up and thanks to Hashim for all
the effort.
With respect to the search tool, this is the first time I've seen A9
although I remember reading about it a while ago. The added features
are enticing, I think I'm going to try it out. I've also used google
exclusively. The toolbar is convenient, even as an address bar. But
every now and then, when I want to make sure I'm not missing
anything, I use vivisimo.com. It uses so-called "clustering"
technology to group similar results and it has an interesting
preview feature. It also doesn't use google's engine, so the results
differ ever so slightly. Thought I'd share.
Chill,

Many may disagree with me, but The Source is still the best. XXL is a
shill for everything Interscope.
Why don't you get a free subscription to both? Call up the pr dept,
tell them you want a promo subscription as a blogger. One person on
this email list has subscriptions to quite a few mags using this
tactic. I would too if I wasnt so lazy.

Oh yeah...lately I get my most thoughtful hip-hop coverage from the
NY Times and Village Voice. Ain't that funny.
Go Kalefa Sanneh and Sasha Frere Jones!
Thanks for the props Gilson. This is just fun for me.
I found another "feature" of A9 today. If you use the engine Amazon
will give you discounts on your purchases. Good stuff. Read more here:

DUMMY TYPE
by Alison Rogers
How To Write a Story Pitch
The art of pitching a story is that of taking the
question uppermost in your mind--"How the hell am I
going to pay the rent today?"-and replacing it with
the question uppermost in an editor's mind--"When the
hell can I finish my assigning so I can go out for
drinks?"
A simple task, but one which can cause rambling--an
offense you realize you've committed only AFTER you've
hung up the phone or hit "send" on your e-mail. The
ideal story pitch, which should be short, ought to
communicate four things:
What the story is
Why the story is timely
Why it belongs in that particular publication only
Why you are the only person on Earth to write it

I love the blogosphere. Where else can you post
suggestions about a product and get a response from
one of the company's employees?
Weeks ago I complained that blogs were "stuck on the
web" and didn't have an easy way to let my friends
read my thoughts the way they feel most comfortable-
through email, IM, and text messages. Read it here:
http://blogcritics.org/archives/2004/09/01/212642.php
Well, Anil Dash of Six Apart/Movable Type fame replied
to my post, letting me know about LiveMessage, a free
service that does all those things. Use it here:
http://blogcritics.org/archives/2004/09/01/212642.php
I hope to implement this on my blogs sooner than
later. Let me know if any of you decide to use it to.

off. It's been live for a week at
http://mixtapes-etc.com.
It's been fun so far. Already we have a deal with
BlazinMixtapes.com to give us free cd's in exchange
for links from our reviews to their pages. Plus I
landed a gig at the new Mixtape Magazine that launched
during the summer. Look for my article about mixtapes
overshadowing vinyl's use as a promotion tool.
Without the help of this group I would not have gotten
so much help so easily. So, thanks again.
Don't hesitate to hit me up either privately or on
this group if you need any help or advice about this
personal publishing stuff we do. I've been learning a
lot and I'm happy to share.

Peoples,
today Google sent me this attached message about their
new desktop search. I tried it out today and it's
amazing. See http://desktop.google.com
One cool thing it does is search the history of the
web pages that you view. As a blogger who's always
looking to reference things I read in the past, this
is gold.
The main thing it does is search the files in my hard
drive. For some reason it does this faster and more
accurately than the search Windows provides.
Try it and let us know what you think.
Note: forwarded message attached.

Google Announces Desktop Search
Google Desktop Search for Email, Files, Web History, and Instant
Message Chats
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - October 14, 2004 - Google Inc. today
announced a beta desktop search application that enables users to
search their email, files, web history, and chats. Called Google
Desktop Search, this new application makes it possible for users to
find information on their computers as fast and easily as they can
search the web with Google.
"Google Desktop Search brings the power of Google to your personal
information on your own computer. As easily as searching Google, you
can instantly search your files, local email, the web pages you have
seen, and more," said Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president
of products." It's free, installs quickly, and keeps completely up
to date. Google Desktop Search represents a quantum leap in access
to your own information."
Google Desktop Search is a lightweight, free, downloadable
application that brings Google search to information on your
computer. The application operates locally on the user's computer,
where it provides the following capabilities:
- Find email, files and more. Users can search across their email
and a wide range of files and information such as email in Microsoft
Outlook and Outlook Express; files in Microsoft Word, Microsoft
Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and text; website history in Internet
Explorer; and instant message chats in AOL Instant Messenger.
- Searches fast like Google. Google.com can search billions of web
pages in a fraction of a second. Google Desktop Search is built with
the same technology, and it can search a single hard drive in even
less time.
- Easy access to desktop results via Google.com Search. Google
Desktop Search enables users to search both their computer and the
web simultaneously. When users search through Google.com (either
from the homepage or the Google Toolbar), Google Desktop Search runs
the same search in parallel on the user's computer. If Google
Desktop Search finds relevant results, those results are added to
the Google.com search results page. This means, users don't need to
decide before they search whether to search the web or their
computer. From a single start point, they get both.
- Fresh, dynamic results. Unlike traditional computer search
software that updates once a day, Google Desktop Search updates
continuously for most file types. When a user downloads a new email
in Outlook, for example, it can be found within seconds using Google
Desktop Search.
As with all Google products, Google Desktop Search is designed from
the ground up to respect user privacy. When a user chooses to search
simultaneously across his or her computer and Google.com, the
computer's content is not made accessible to Google, or to anyone
else, without the user's express permission. Users can select what
information they want to have searched, and easily remove
information whenever they want.
Google Desktop Search is available at http://desktop.google.com. It
is currently available for Windows XP and Windows 2000 Service Pack
3 and above. It requires a minimum of 128MB of RAM, and a 400MHz (or
faster) Pentium processor is recommended. Google Desktop Search is
available in English today and there are plans to make it available
in other languages.

Doc Searls has a great perspective on making money
with blogs. He argues that making connections and
gaining authority on a subject is more important than
earning pennies through direct advertising.
That's been my plan from day one. Blogging will never
pay my bills. Actually, my low key Google ads don't
even cover my hosting costs. What I'm hoping for is to
build my network while I'm still studying
publishing/journalism in a way that I couldn't if I
was spending all this time in a traditional
internship.
Pros amongst us, please shake me awake if this
strategy seems stupid.
Anyway, read all of Doc's article here:
