Well folks, it was an exciting evening down at the Malibu Inn. Early on Rhett
came out for a sound check but then it took a while for the opening act, Jeff
Caudill, to come out to play. He got started a bit after 9:30; I think Rhett
took the stage around 10:45 and played over an hour.
Jeff's performance was aided by his friend Michael on keyboard and mandolin.
They were good, but the crowd was looking forward to Rhett. Actually Jeff
himself announced that he was as excited as all of us to see Rhett come out. I
appreciated Jeff's acoustic set, and particularly liked the song "Never Been
High."
When Rhett appeared at the side door, many of us started to scream. Actually
there were a few women screaming throughout the show. . . he opened with My
Valentine and just got hotter from there. In fact, the area around the stage was
hot, and as Jeff said, "not in a good way." Rhett asked "is anyone else hot in
here or is it just me?" As we all agreed, someone said, "no one is as hot as you
Rhett."
Here is my best effort at the set list.
My Valentine
Won't Be Home
Barrier Reef (entire crowd singing along)
Things that Disappear
Nineteen
Singular Girl
Cover - Wave of Mutilation (Rhett says "IMHO the best song ever written")
Buick City Complex
Brand New Way
Melt Show
Wish the Worst
Untitled New Song (Impatient) - written in L.A. in Feb. and mentions local
freeways
Rollerskate Skinny (Two girls had "Rollerskate Skinny" and "Pretty as a Penny"
across their respective chests, which many of us and I think Rhett got a kick
out of)
Come Around
Help Me Suzanne
New Kid
Big Brown Eyes
Our Love
Terrible Vision
Encore
Question - Here we got an actual tale from his own proposal where he explained
that even the most eloquent artists may be rendered helpless. "I dropped to one
knee and said, will you marry me?" After the song, there was a loud "thank you"
and it became apparent that one of the audience members was going to take this
opportunity to propose. He got up on stage, Nathan, with many tattoos, and
proceeded to propose to his girlfriend, whose name I did not catch. Rhett stood
back playing the riff on his guitar, enjoying the interactive part of the show.
Anyway, she said yes and everyone clapped and Rhett went right into Murder and a
Heart Attack at the previous request of an audience member. He ended with a
resounding rendition of Time Bomb.
All in all it was an awesome show, Rhett at his best, a guitar string only
broken on the very last song. He said he was pleasantly surprised by the evening
and promised to return in the near future - and noted the band will be working
on a new album later this year.
I look forward to the upcoming tour of the band - hey, come back to SoCal
guys!
Thanks again to Rhett, and to the staff at Malibu Inn.
