The Last Waltz.

Well, unfortunately, Martin Scorsese and his cameras weren't there to document
the
festivities, but Saturday night brought a fitting end to Rhett Miller's decade
of
performances at Largo.

For those that don't know much about the history of Largo, and its plan to move
in May to
a new space in LA, here is a link:

http://theguide.latimes.com/blogs/soundboard/2008/03/11/largo-is-moving-from-its\
-
current-spot-to-coronet-theatre/

Thankfully, at the outset, Rhett announced that he was recording both shows
(Friday
(which I sadly didn't attend) and Saturday) for a possible live release.
Because shows at
Largo are about "flying by the seat of your pants" he was going to focus on
covers, and
possibly release the shows as "The Interpreter – Live at Largo." Based on last
night, it
should be an amazing CD.

The setlist was obviously tailored to celebrate his final show at Largo. From
the opening
"This is What I Do," to "Barrier Reef," to "The Other Shoe" (complete with the
Merle
Haggard story), Rhett kept the diehards happy. But, the real story was the
cover songs. A
beautiful version of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love," a fun version of the
"Weeds" title
track "Little Boxes" and his MasterCard commercial version of "Homeward Bound"
was just
the beginning. His version of "Waterloo Sunset," which he called the greatest
song ever
written, was perfect. The night also included songs by Aztec Camera, Tom T.
Hall (Sneaky
Snake, by request), Elliot Smith, and a riveting version of Fiona Apple's "Paper
Bag," perfect
for the Largo stage. Of course, there was "Wave of Mutilation" segueing into "I
Wanna Be
Sedated," because, as Rhett said, "They are all folk songs."

There were so many highlights, I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Of course he
didn't let us
forget that his other band has a new CD coming out. Great versions of "Dance
With Me,"
"The One," and a stunning "Here's to the Halcyon" which made me excited to hear
the rest
of BIOG. Other great moments included a new song written for a friend that
spent a year
in Iraq, "Government Man" which channeled his inner Fogerty. After hearing it
on the KUT
broadcast, I was ecstatic to hear "Bonfire." The encore gave us a complete
version of
Dylan's "Desolation Row," which really highlighted the final verse (after Rhett
said "it's why
(he's) a songwriter." That performance nicely book ended an earlier performance
of a song
("Champaign, Illinois") that he wrote long ago admittedly stealing Dylan's
melody.

But, it was really the last two songs that brought the meaning of the night into
focus.
After getting us ready for his last ever Largo performance, Rhett launched into
"Rollerskate Skinny" which he said was mostly written in the Largo back room,
emotions
took over, he lost concentration, and aborted the song. He wasn't finished. He
asked for
one final request from his wife, Erica. After much thinking, she picked "My Two
Feet" from
the new record. After all, Rhett said, tonight is "really about the future." I
don't think
we'll see that song played with as much poignancy anywhere else. Finally, he
gave
"Rollerskate Skinny" a second shot and played it perfectly. The emotion was
obvious as
Rhett soaked up the applause for his final Largo night.

Thanks Rhett, it was one for the ages.

The Murry cd is not out yet. The name of the cd is "I
Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way". He said
he will have a MySpace with a link to buy it and I'm
sure there will be several other ways to purchase it.
The release date on the cd is April 21. I have a copy
of the cd and it is great. 17 songs about God and
trains. It's haunting, moving and some great music.
His voice is sounding great.

Any PR's good PR, IMO, just so long as you don't get busted for DUI,
or come stumbling out of a club sans Jockey shorts.

If you're on the "old" official mailing list, we're still working on

everyone on the old list will simply sent a link and invited to join
