This link to the US distributor indicates a two meter pair is $1,685.

I also noticed they are associated with DACT (Danish Audio ConnecT),
maker of high quality stepped attenuators.

Thanks, Sheri, I'll be there.

Any interest in hearing a DAC I upgraded recently? It might be
interesting to compare it to the analog outputs of a good quality
CD/SACD player like John's Sony. Pictures I took while upgrading the
Lite Audio DAC-60 at
http://fredt300b.smugmug.com/gallery/1211061

I also completed a pair of speakers recently that sound pretty good
for the $350 I have invested in them. Designer's description at this
link (mine are in floorstanding enclosures but they are acoustically
identical to the ones described here):

Hello all. A good local friend of mine named Mike is looking to
reduce his personal inventory of audio gear. I thought some members
here might be interested. I have heard all but the Dynaco
extensively, and I can attest to the sound quality and descriptions
of those pieces of gear. If I had any place to use the Hales,
they'd already be spoken for, and the mods to the Spicas really did
make significant improvements - they really are sweet speakers.
Mike can be contacted at senroy@..., and he will welcome
inquiries.
-------------------------------------------------
* CAL Icon MkII, newish remote, no issues, $275.

* Dynaco FM3, working eye tube, $75.

* Spica TC-50s, matched pair, corners of veneer need glue to stay
down, internal wire upgraded to Cardas, crossover capacitors
upgraded to very-high-quality-and-$$$ film caps, Edison-Price cable
posts, $350.

* Chicago Speakerworks stands as sold for use with TC-50s, some
scratches but very presentable, perfect height for TC50s, $75 or $25
if bundled with Spicas. (I'd rather not ship the stands.)

* Hales Revelation 1 speakers. Not sure i want to sell these,
they're awesome and would cost significantly more to replace with
something of equal value/performance. They're also practically
indistinguishable from new. But, i'm asking $500 and would sell them
if someone met that price.

July (8th?) to tell us about how he organized jazz concerts and got to

Let me know what you think, and would like to hear about.

He has some pictures, and we could bring some Jazz CDs and hear his

Hi,

I have been a jazz fan for over 50 years, so it sounds like a great idea
to me.

By the way, I've finally bought the Rotel 1062 integrated amp, and it's like
adding a
subwoofer to my SMGa's. I never would have thought that 60 watts could sound so
powerful. I guess i will need a new CD player next. Any suggestions ?

Here's an excerpt from a TAS review that suggest the 1072 CD player
would be a good match:

"Audio components, too, are looking to hook up with an ideal
companion, for only then can they fulfill their sonic potential. As
with humans, though, perfect audio partnerships can be elusive.
Consider, for instance, the plight of a high-value, high-performance
CD player like the Rotel RCD-1072, our 2003 Overall Product of the
Year. There aren't many similarly able, affordable integrated amps (or
receivers) worthy of sharing shelf space with such a gem.

Fortunately, Rotel, with clairvoyance as accurate as a spotting
scope, foresaw the problem and created the RA-1062 integrated amp. By
any and all of the above criteria, it is the RCD-1072's ideal match.
The new amp shares the CD player's attractive satin silver finish (a
ho-hum black is also available) and supremely magnanimous $699 price
tag. Most importantly, this amp's standout performance is fully the
equal of the stunning RCD-1072. And although the 1062 was literally
made for that CD player—the two were "voiced" together before their
respective designs were finalized—its copious charms are evident with
a wide variety of source equipment and speakers".

Fred,

I would like to hear your DAC. Since CD is here to stay concentrating
on improving CD playback is vital. Maybe we could listen to DACs and
CD players costing below $2000 new or used.

I can bring the DAC, but CD and SACD players was the topic for one
of our late 2005 meetings, so it may be too soon to cover that topic
again.

But here's another digital-related idea: Our meeting topic could
be "the dumbing down of audio". To my knowledge I have never heard
an MP3 disk, and I would be interested in hearing for myself the
difference in sound quality as the resolution is progressively
reduced.

I recently installed EAC (Exact Audio Copy) on my computer. It's CD
burning software program that does considerable quality sampling and
is capable of burning an exact copy (a WAV file) of a CD to the
computer hard drive (an then to a CDR). It can also burn FLAC files.
FLAC is a high quality lossless compression algorithm that many say
is indistinguishable from the original CD. Of course my computer
also has Windows Media, which can burn CD's using Windows Lossless
Compression, Windows Lossy Compression, and (heaven forbid) low
quality MP3 compression.

How about this: I select a well recorded CD and burn it to several
CDR's, each using a progressively lower resolution file format (WAV,
FLAC, WIn Lossless, WIn Lossy, MP3), and we listen to one track
starting with the original disk and working our way down the quality
chain. Who knows, as a result of this exercise Frank may sell his
Esoteric SACD player on Audiogon and buy an MP3 player at Wal Mart
to replace it:)

I also have another toy that might interest the more adventursome of
HAS members. It's a Squeezebox, which is reviewed here by John
Atkinson:

http://www.stereophile.com/images/newsletter/306Bstph.html

I could record the same disk described in the above exercise and
play it off Linda's notebook computer's hard drive through the
external DAC for all to hear whether music from a computer hard
drive is inferior to a CD. For this exercise I would use a better
quality player to do the comparison (John's Sony is already at
Henry's and would work well for this comparison)

Any interest in any of the above? It isn't the kind of meeting topic
we normally have, but it might be good to learn about all the stuff
our adult kids are using in their systems.

Sounds good to me...

Fred <fredaudio@...> wrote: I can bring the DAC, but CD and SACD

of our late 2005 meetings, so it may be too soon to cover that topic

Looks like most of the responses to my suggestion for a July topic are
positive.

Ok if we firm up the date for the July meeting on the 8th, so I can
finalize the invitation to my coworker who will talk about arranging
Jazz concerts?

Looks like Vlad will also contribute to the discussion.

BTY: His name is Ed Boczar.

Sounds good to me. Let's just agree the meeting will be on the 8th and
that you will invite Ed as our presnter. Should be interesting.

If we try out different DAC's, I think it would also be interesting
do a comparison between different digital cables.

Dan, that's a very good idea. I have been using a $35 extreme budget
cable from Element cable company. It would be interesting to hear the
difference a better cable will make. It would also be good if somebody
could bring another DAC so we'll have some basis for comparison. The
modded Benchmark DAC we heard at the last DAC comparison meeting would
be a good candidate.

For anybody who's interested here's a link to a picture of the
speakers I plan to bring to the next meeting. As I mentioned in a
previous message they're standmount-size (0.5 cu ft) speakers housed
in small floorstander enclosures (I don't like speaker stands and if
you'er DIY'ing it's just as easy to build a floorstanding
enclosure). The drivers are mid-level Seas. The crossover parts are
high quality air core inductors, Northcreek caps, and Mills
resistors. They cost about $350/pr to build.

http://fredt300b.smugmug.com/gallery/132721/18

The speaker in the adjacent picture is also a recent project. This
is a high efficiency (95dB sensitivity) with a 1st order crossover
using an Eminence woofer and GR Research tweeter. It's designed
specifically for low power tube amps.

My most current project is a very unusual design I heard last week
at the Great Plains Audio Fest. It's a bipole mass loaded
transmission line (MLTL) using two 4.5" full range drivers - one on
the front baffle, the other on the rear, wired in parallel with no
crossover or filter. This one is available as a kit (minus the
enclsoures) for $260 from Creative Sound Solutions. Info at the link
below.

Same cut over and over and over and over and...

We'll try to set a reasonable limit. My attention starts to wander when I hear
the same thing more than three or four times, even if it's not my wife reminding
me of a chore I promised to do.

That sometime in the not-too-distant future every serious audiophile
will have, in addition to his CD/SACD player and turntable, a hard
drive based music server that will hold his/her entire music
collection which can be easily accessed throughout the house from any
of his/her audio systems. The server will also access internet radio
stations, largely replacing the FM tuner.

The Squeezebox I borrowed from a Bottlehead friend, along with his 300
Gig portable hard drive with 192 CD's on it, has convinced me. The
first high end server has been developed by a company whose primary
focus is computers, not audio, but I noticed Cambridge Audio is the
first mainstream audio company to introduce a "mid fi /high end"
server. This only makes sense - music servers came to us as a mass
market product, and they will find their way into high end audio from
the bottom up.

http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=39&Title=Azur+640H

High end audio manufacturers are a conservative bunch, but you can bet
they are watching this development closely, and their leaders have
already asked the R&D staff "What would it cost to develop a high end
version of this damn thing?" Cable manufacturers are watching too
because many audiophiles will connect to their computer via both an
ethernet cable and a wireless router.
