I have a customer that has a pair of Martin-Logan Monolith III's for
sale. He is asking $1800.00. These speakers are in excellent
physical and sonic shape. He prefers a local sale. At this price
they won't last long.

I have emailed the coordinator of the Home Theater Group asking him to
check and see if members of this club can meet with them at lunch, then
go over to Mr. Chu's home theater.

Atul,

I can make arragements with my customer. They are at his home. I'm just trying
to help him out. He is replacing them with speakers of which I'm not a dealer.

I was aware that some HAS members also participate in the HT club, but
I didn't realize our meetings are often planned for the same day and
time. The same is true for the Dallas Audio Club and the Lone Star
Bottleheads. Most audio clubs seem to plan their meetings for the
first or second Saturday of the month.

Would there be a problem with scheduling our future meetings for the
third or fourth Saturday of the month? This way HAS members would have
more flexibility to pursue our other audio interests independently of
HAS activities. Let's discuss this Saturday.

Hi Fred and all,

Two things: (1) Does the audio video club in Houston have a Yahoo group
or website? If so, please post it. (2) The Texas Bottlehead Club, when
held in Dallas, always take precedence over our Dallas Audio Club and I
combine the two when I host. I plan no official DAC meetings when there
will be a Bottlehead meeting anywhere else in Texas. jim...

The Houston Home Theater Group does not have a website
or Yahoo group.
They are mentioned in some of the home theater forums.

From my standpoint I have no problem of us moving our meeting to the 3rd or 4th
Saturday of the month and I fully agree that we should discuss this point at
Saturday's meeting as we may have members that may not be able to do this.
There is another point along this line that I feel we should consider and that
is some of our members also have to work on Saturdays. If time allows at
Saturday's meeting, it would be nice if we could also touch on this subject and
try to determine how best we could include these other people. At this point I
do not know an exact number of people in this situation but it would be nice to
have some way that we could include more in the functions we put together.

Agreed.

I know some folks that either can't come on Saturdays, or, it's too
early in the day. Personally, HT doesn't interest me that much but I
understand the issue. Let's talk amongst ourselves.

HT doesn't interest me that much either. I would prefer to have
lunch after the meeting as a HAS group as we usually do, and plan
any joint activities with the HT group for a future date that
doesn't conflict with an already-scheduled meeting.

To all HAS members,

For anyone that is interested, I have received some new speaker cables and
interconnects from China along with some additional samples. A few people
have expressed interest in the interconnects, so I will bring a few sets to
the Saturday meeting. Also, I will bring DEMO cables that anyone is welcome
to take home and try in their system. I have two different speaker cables,
three different interconnects, and three different power cables. Let me
know if you are interested in the DEMO's ASAP. The speaker cables are 8
feet and the interconnects and power cables just under 5 feet.

Regards,

Wayne Curzadd

In my opinion we had a very successful meeting Saturday.
My own head count indicated that we had 23 people in attendance.

Thanks to Fred Thompson for organizing a very informative and interesting
meeting and to all that took the time and trouble to bring the DAC's, CD/SACD
players, speakers and other equipment. I personally enjoyed hearing the Denon
and the new Sony as those are excellent pieces of equipment. Since I have never
utilized a DAC in any system that I have ever had, I appreciate the members that
brought a unit to our meeting such that some one like myself could hear the
differences that they make to the sound.

To those that have borrowed some of the pieces that we have at Henry's facility,
it would be greatly appreciated if you would post your opinions (both negative
and positive) on the pieces of equipment such that others can view your
comments.

You may have noticed the granite pieces that we have for the amplifiers, one was
from Ryan and the other is from Fred Thompson and will be utilized as amplifier
platforms. Ryan had informed me that the 3" block weighs approximately 100
pounds and my only comment is that is the heaviest 100 pounds I have ever picked
up. My drill stand even groaned a bit at the weight when I placed it on the
drilling table. Both platforms are on spikes and if there are other
modifications that you feel would enhance the sound, please advise.

Again, thanks to all for an excellent meeting and hope to see everyone on the
10th of September.

John Z.

I learned a few things from this meeting. I was the one who brought the Maroon 5
CD. I have heard it suggested but, never experienced how different music sounds
on different speaker systems. I was very surprised how compressed and lifeless
"This Love" sounded on the system at the meeting compared to my own. From
reading Audiogon threads it seems that "classic rock" sounds good on some
speakers and compressed on others. On my set up (McCormack DNA-1, Tube Audio
Design 150 Pre, Eastern Electric Minimax CD, Vandersteen 2CE Sigs), the same
recording sounded robust with a wide and deep sound stage. Different components
were spread across my listening room and they were easy to pinpoint with eyes
closed.I geared my set up to classic rock and do not have the type of music that
is played at these meetings so I am training my ears to understand and critique
based n a totally different sound. If anyone else can suggest some good classic
rock red book recordings, I would like to hear them. My
particular taste centers around music with punch and pace. Aerosmith, Eagles,
Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd. Unfortunately, it is hard to find recordings that
bring out the best in a system.

That was also my first experience with an outboard DAC set up. Definitely heard
the difference. I liked the tube CD player the best. I enjoyed the air and
presence to the music even though I don't listen to that type. Anyway, I
borrowed a power cord for my CD and will report after they have burned in a
while...

Would there be any interest in comparing a (price) progression of
single box CD & SACD players? I have a $300 Onix player, which
represents the lower entry level for mid fi sound. If other members
could bring players that are priced in the $800-$1,500 range, and
Bob Noblitt could bring his Sony XA9000ES SACD player, and Jim the
Denon we would have a logical stair step (price) progression to
audition. The emphasis would be on low to moderate price single box
players ($300-$5,000), and I would prefer to not intermix separate
digital components within this price range. But if somebody could
bring a top quality single box player, or if Ken Leibowitz could
bring his Verdi SACD transport, Delius dac and Purcell 44.1-DSD
upsampler we could also get a taste of the high end.

If there's any interest in doing this meeting as another "pizza &
beer party" on October 1st or the 15th, Linda and I would be glad to
host, and everyone could also hear the new Audio Mirror 40 watt
6C33C monoblocks with the Selah Audio line arrays.

Please post your responses, and/or we can discuss this at the
September meeting.

Ok, we now have a $3,000+ player and a $300 one. Why does the
phrase "salon and saloon" from an old James Taylor CD come to mind?
Can someone bring something in between? Monte, how about the Eastern
Electric Minimax?

I could bring the $800 HHb Burn-it Plus. It's a combo player.burner,
balanced or single-ended that I believe is based on some Pioneer model.

Sounds good. I'll take a poll at the Sept meeting to find out what

Fred:

I will have the Shanling SCD-T200 and the Harmon Kardon HD7500.
The HD7500 will only play the redbook CD's as I do not think the SACD's had
arrived at the time this player was on the market.
Thx for this idea for a meeting,
John Z.
