The Impro-Visor group is for those interested in using and sharing information on
Impro-Visor (Jazz Improvisation Advisor), free software for musicians and song-writers who wish to create tunes, improvised solos, transcriptions, or bass lines in the form of lead sheets (chord symbols with melody).
Impro-Visor also generates styled accompaniment (e.g. piano, bass, drums) automatically from chord progressions. In addition to supporting a database for storing and retrieving licks, Impro-Visor can generate new licks and full solos based on a user-modifiable grammar. Most musical information is stored as open text files. Sound output is MIDI, and playback can be exported as MIDI files.
Impro-Visor runs on Windows 2000, XP, VISTA, MacOSx, and Linux. You must have installed
Java 1.5 or later in order to run. Download the latest release from this group's
Files area, unzipping into a dedicated folder.
Notes:
- If using WinZip, please be sure to select the "use folder names" option.
- Impro-Visor is a Java app. There may be a problem with MacOSx "Leopard" until it supports Java 1.5 or later.
Impro-Visor was developed at
Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, by Prof. Bob Keller and undergraduate research students, from 2005 to the present.
The official home page for documentation is
http://impro-visor.com/. There is
a tutorial. Here is a quick
example of a solo, which starts with the chorus show the right.
