Charles,
Here's my guess: within the Global Program Settings are the *Default*
values for Chord Instrument, etc. Those are used when a totally new
leadsheet is created. They will not affect an existing leadsheet,
such as the ones in the Imaginary Book.
Please try the Leadsheet and Chorus Settings, and set your Chord MIDI
Instrument there. That will change the current leadsheet. This works
fine for me. Let me know if it doesn't work for you.
Thanks for asking.

There are some minor display issues with Sun Java 1.5 on Vista - will get a screen 'flicker' with gui applications when they start up. This is resolved in Sun Java 1.6, so best to go for this version.

I've installed the latest Java runtime (1.6.0.2), then extracted
improvisor206.zip and clicked on improviser.jar file.
Got an "open vocabulary" window and after bypassing it

Sometimes, depending on the method of extraction, things don't end up
in a common directory. This causes problems.
Please make sure that everything into a single directory, which
ideally is named improvisor206 (but the actual name doesn't matter).
There should be the following units in that directory:
improvisor.jar
leadsheets
vocab
README
READMEpc
Once you can see these things in your directory, double-click
improvisor.jar.
Directory vocab should contain file My.voc. If either the directory of
the file is missing, there might be problems of the type you describe.
The green splash window normally stays up only about a minute. Without
the My.voc file, the tool is not of much value, because it contains
all the chord definitions and such.
I'm sorry you're having problems, but I'll be happy to work them out
with you.

Hi,
Please can someone explain to me the situation... I really love this software I
just found and
I'm really excited. I'm and learning jazz pianist and a learning java student.
I've been
searching the web for a great java music project which I could participate in as
I'm told this is
the best way to learn and that employers love people who do Open Source at home.
I found this program in a list of gnu licensed software. What license actually
does this
software come with? I can't find the info? I'd really like to both contribute
and learn from this
project, it's amazing!
Thanks,
John
ps. I totally understand if it is not open sourced but, don't ask, don't get!

John,
A version of the source will be provided on request to
improvisor@....
The reason that we are not suggesting that people casually
download the source is because it will not likely be of benefit
to the casual observer without a significant time investment.
We're looking forward to the day that everything is nice and
clean, but meanwhile about 10 developers have been involved
so far. We would like to see any side development coordinate
with our own, rather than create branches that will take the
project even further out of control.
Thanks for your interest. I'll send you information about
getting the source in a separate message.

Hi Friends,
Just joined the group as a result of Google search for ways to put
together lead sheets for my band. I use Finale Print Music but it has
its limitations unless I upgrade to Allegro some time in the future.
For now I was looking ideas to create lead sheets and this showed up
in Wikipedia. I am glad I found this group. Hope to do some learning
and growing with this community.
Whereas I have some programming experience in Pascal and HyperTalk, I
do not qualify for Java programming. However, since I am technically
inclined and trained in Microsoft Networking technology and repairing
and building PCs, I might be able to give some informed feedback on
this project.
Hope to hear from someone as to how I can help. My brother-in-law and
another friend of mine are computer professionals. I use their wisdom
from time to time.
Take Care,
Victor :-)

One thing members can do is contribute solos they've constructed.
I was working on Benny Golson's "Stablemates" tonight on my horn.
After deciding I could use more study of it, I wrote out
2 choruses. I've created a Contributed Solos folder in the
files area and put the solo leadsheet there.
We'd like to hear from some of the rest of you. Thanks in advance.

Mike,
Please say more. What OS? Do you have all the Impro-Visor
folders in a common folder, as desired? Is there a sub-folder
vocab with a file My.voc?
What you are describing sounds like it can't find
vocab\My.voc,
which prevents the load from completing.
Thanks.

When extracting the downloaded file (I used WINZIP for that) –
make sure to mark the "use folder names" option.
This will extract the software to its original folders – and there
you go.

Yes, I had the same trouble. The only solution for me was to scanner
the score printing, import the image into a writer or drawing program
and enlarge it. I did it with a Slackware linux OS using Kooka to
scanner the image, OpenOffice draw for the import. Using OpenOffice
you can save the file like a pdf file too ;-)
The result make a compromise. Usually, you can insert 16 bars into a
page, with horizontal setting. We hope in a better score printing code
source :-(

Rather than print, then scan, consider snapping the pages off the
screen. For example, with MacOS, I use
shift-command-4
to create a .png file for any region of the screen, or
control-shift-command-4
to capture the image so that I can paste it into any of various
standard documents. I am not sure what the Windows counterpart
is, but I know there are at least some capture tools such as
SnapZ that can be obtained for this, if it is not built in.
This type of screen capture was used for most of the images
that appear in the Impro-Visor web pages.
The reason this particular printing routine is used is that the
standard Java one was interfering with some aspect of MIDI on
one of the platforms (Apple, I think). We should revisit this
decision in a future version.
Regards,
Bob
What I did for one specific score (16 bars) was to use the landscape
format and reduced the margins and it grew bigger. I wonder if the
score automatically adjusts to the margin settings, in that case that
should work with a typical 32 bars chorus by just reducing the margin
settings.

Hello,
I just found out about this on another group.
Some quick questions - when I create a song or when I play a
song from the Imaginary files, the first measure does not play.
When they do play, it looks like the sound is about a measure
behind the displayed music. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Also, can you import MIDI files into this program?
Thanks!

This is the first report I've heard about the first measure
not playing. What machine (including speed), OS, and Java
version are you using? This might have to do with the second
problem as well.
Currently there is no import of MIDI files, only export.

Hi Bob,
I am using a MacBook Pro with a 2.16 Core Duo chip and 1 mb of Ram. My
Java is J2SE 5.0. I just upgraded to Leopard (OS X 10.5), that might
be the problem. Have you had a chance to test the application with
Leopard yet?
Thank you for the quick response!
Reply from Bob Keller:
Bill,
Except for Leopard, that is the same setup I use about half the time,
except 2 GB of ram (I suspect you mean GB and not mb).
I don't think it's the ram tho', as I run 1 GB on my desktop machine
just fine. Thus it might indeed be Leopard, and I'm really sorry to
hear that, because I was looking forward to the upgraded features.
Let me know if you find out more.
Meanwhile, you could temporarily introduce a dummy measure up-front,
as follows: Open the Textual Editor (control-F). In front of the
chords insert
NC |
and in front of the melody notes, insert the appropriate length
rest, e.g.
r1 for 4/4 time
r2. for 3/4 time
r2 for 2/2 time
r1+4 for 5/4 time
then click "Editor to Leadsheet" at the bottom.
I realize this is annoying but you could still use the tool
until the underlying problem is solved.
Thanks. Again, I'm sorry you're having this trouble, but
thanks for alerting us to what might be Leopard issues.

I would be surprised if you couldn't. If you can't, then I suppose
you must tie the notes. Dotted notes seem to be associated more with
classical music so I could see why they would omit them in this case.
I actually haven't used the program that much but I was pretty
impressed with its capabilities given it is a free program.
I have been using Sibelius to compose - that program does practically
anything.

In a way, yes. Impro-Visor differs from pure notation programs in that
it decides whether a dotted note is to be used based on the note
duration and onset.
When you click on a slot, and the duration from the previous slot is
appropriate, a dotted note will be used. Currently Impro-Visor does
this for dotted half-, eighth-, and sixteenth- notes. Ties are used
for quarter notes.
For example, to get a dotted-eighth + sixteenth pair, having clicked
on the slot for the first note, press 4 to get 4 slots per beat at
that slot, then click on the fourth slot to get the sixteenth note.
The first note will then become dotted.
Similarly, to get a dotted-sixteenth + thirty-second pair, press 8
to get 8 slots per beat, and again click on the fourth slot to get
the thirty-second note.
I've shown some examples in bar 3 of the file:
Explanatory Examples > dottedNotes.png
of our Files section. Note that the construction lines and the
brackets underneath only appear when the cursor is in that measure.
Another way to get dotted values is to use the textual entry.
For example g8 is an eighth-note, while g8. is a dotted eighth-note.
These dots specify durations, but Impro-Visor may render them with
ties, depending on the note onset.
Also note that to get "swing feel" it is preferred to just enter
the durations as eighth notes and let the style specification
provide the feel, rather than try to enter the durations explicitly.
I hope this helps.

An issue reported earlier with Impro-Visor running on the new MacOS
"Leopard" release is confirmed:
On playback, the cursor (green line) starts ahead of the sound, by
about one measure, depending on tempo.
I will look into a fix for this, but it might be a problem with
Leopard itself. If there is a fix, it will probably be in the
forthcoming Impro-Visor version 3.0.
Thanks, those of you who are Mac users, for your patience.

hi, just downloaded... seems like a cool bit of software... but am
still exploring...
just wondered how (if at all) it's possible to shift a section of
notes forward by say an eighth or quarter note?
for instance in tab power pro, selecting a note and pressing shift
will create space at the beginning of the phrase.
also does the display always give the notes unbracketed? as reading it
like that is quite tough.
thanks in advance for any help

Daniel,
You select the notes, then drag the selection laterally, to the
next slot, or any number of slots. (Currently this only works for
more than 1 note. There's a small bug that prevents it for a single
note).

That's right, we don't have "beaming" yet. It is on the wish-list
but lower priority than some other items. But singers read this
type of notation all the time, so instrumentalists should be able
to. If the density of spacing is an issue, you can always make
there be fewer measures on a line. (Ask if it is unclear how
to do this.)
