Her latest release weaves these two worlds together in a vibrant, transcontinental tapestry. Jim Scott: a well-known UU activist/artist whose music covers ecology, justice,and peace
(And a much-loved veteran of the Indy Folk Series)

Years of activism are reflected in Jim's work. His songs, poetry and short stories address issues of ecology, justice and peace with insight and gentle wit. As a member of the Paul Winter Consort, Jim was co-creator of the monumental choral work Missa Gaia/Earth Mass. As a UU, he created "The Earth and Spirit Songbook," a collection of over 100 songs of earth and peace by many contemporary composers, and helped create the "Green Sanctuary" program, a framework used by congregations of all denominations to promote good stewardship of the earth. His musical creativity has produced published choral works, soundtracks for PBS, a stage musical, many recordings of songs and concert collaborations with renowned Jazz, Classical, and Folk artists. www.jimscottsongs.com

Her lyric driven, melodic, often humorous, alternative folk music speaks to issues of tolerance and human rights, as well as personal relationships and funny circumstances. This time, your tunes and contributions benefit Somethin' to Crow About, which brings transformative art experiences (and much-needed art supplies) to kids in low-income schools. Open Mic Night features a series of solo and ensemble performers, each playing about 10 minutes or so (typically, three songs.) We've been told to expect some longtime favorites as well as performers new to the series--and you never know who will drop in to try new material or musical partners. Open Mic Night is a vehicle for rookies as well as veterans who enjoy the easy atmosphere and great sound (Hint: look for some delightful gems from our favorite Austrian soprano.)

Hello, music lovers:

Tim Grimm and Jan Lucas Grimm delivered the goods last night in the form of two sets of finely honed, personal, evocative, roots-based music. They were at their best, with harmonies, banter and rapport that swept up everyone in the room.

That room, the sanctuary-turned-concert-hall at UUI, had never sounded so good and never held so many for one of our concerts. It was magic, and aiding the artistry were Karl Zemlin's Sonic Artistry and the efforts of a juiced-up committee of volunteer co-producers.

Look for the magic to happen again on Saturday, March 20, when we hear the Maple Trio--three masters on a slew of string instruments. You've heard them as the musical core of Blueprint Music, and perhaps on their recordings. Catch them live in the ultimate listening room.

Please note, music lovers:

The next Indy Folk Series event is March 27 (not March 20 as previously announced).

The Maple Trio is on a tear and we're excited to have a chance to hear them in the wonderful IFS listening-room setting. Scott Shoger gave the trio high marks in NUVO with his review of their new album, Samara.

As Scott puts it, the Maple Trio "transmutes the raw material of American music into something that's not quite classical, not quite folk, not easily classified. Their work is skillfully executed, ambitious and experimental, with a breathy, organic texture consistent with the group's adoration of nature, trees above all. It's in the same vein as the Appalachian Waltz record featuring three giants (Yo-Yo Ma, Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer)." Sounds irresistible, doesn't it? It is.

The Maple Trio is Matt Koher, Grover Parido, and Doug Sauter. The trio instrumentation includes violin, mandolin, guitar, cello, and banjo.Genre influences include traditional fiddle tunes, classical, ragtime, jazz, and tango. This gives the trio a cross-generational, cross-cultural appeal.
