Emily Pinkerton: an ethnomusicologist whose music spans from Appalachia to the Andes

When she lays down South American grooves on guitar, audiences are hard-pressed to tell that Emily Pinkerton is a native of the Midwest. Born and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana, her musical education carried her to Valparaíso, Chile, inspiring a decade of immersion in Latin American music. Her latest release weaves these two worlds together in a vibrant, transcontinental tapestry. Evocative, haunting vocals in Spanish and English soar above pulsating rhythms of Andean guitar and old-time banjo.  www.emilypinkerton.com

Jim Scott: a well-known UU activist/artist whose music covers ecology, justice, and peace
(And a much-loved veteran of the Indy Folk Series)

Years of activism are reflected in Jim's work.  His songs, poetry and short stories address issues of ecology, justice and peace with insight and gentle wit.  As a member of the Paul Winter Consort, Jim was co-creator of the monumental choral work Missa Gaia/Earth Mass.  As a UU, he created "The Earth and Spirit Songbook," a collection of over 100 songs of earth and peace by many contemporary composers, and helped create the "Green Sanctuary" program, a framework used by congregations of all denominations to promote good stewardship of the earth. His musical creativity has produced published choral works, soundtracks for PBS, a stage musical, many recordings of songs and concert collaborations with renowned Jazz, Classical, and Folk artists.  www.jimscottsongs.com

See you then, music lovers--and stay tuned for the announcement of the 2009-2010 series of the fabulous Indy Folk Series.

Check it out, music lovers:

We're starting our ninth season (!) in style, with the Indy debut of Grammy Award-winner Barbara Bailey Hutchison (www.bbhsings.com ). She's sung at the White House (three times) and on hundreds of commercials. She's been voted "Best Solo Performer," "Best Acoustic Performer," and "Best Female Performer" in a national magazine poll, so I'd say she's ready to play the fabulous Indy Folk Series.

Saturday, September 19: Indy Folk Series Presents Barbara Bailey Hutchison

7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
UUI (Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis)
615 West 43rd St. (Just south of Butler University)

About Barbara Bailey Hutchison
What kind of music does she sing? Good question. Her music defies categorization. Her lyric driven, melodic, often humorous, alternative folk music speaks to issues of tolerance and human rights, as well as personal relationships and funny circumstances. She writes much of what she presents, and has gained critical acclaim for her work. Inspired by experience, hers are songs in which everyone can find themselves.

Dakota Records, the independent record label responsible for eleven of the singer's seventeen albums, was started by Hutchison, because she "...just didn't fit the major label mold", and she wanted to maintain more control over the content and production of her music. Singer-songwriter, Gene Cotton, produced three of her CDs including "Reconcile", her critically acclaimed "Christmas" CD, and a CD for children, "Cat In The Sink".

About the Indy Folk Series
www.indyfolkseries.org
Now in its ninth season, the Indy Folk Series is a non-profit venture presenting selected acoustic music in a comfortable, coffeehouse setting. The series showcases nationally known and local performers playing folk, bluegrass, Celtic and other styles.

Candles on the tables hearken back to coffeehouses of the 1970s. First-rate acoustics and a friendly atmosphere put artists and audience at ease. Refreshments include coffee, wine and a tempting array of snacks.

See you soon, music lovers--and thanks for supporting live acoustic music!

Open Mic Night: Saturday, Nov. 28

Feelingthankful? (Of course you are--please reflect for a moment.)

Share the feeling on Saturday, Nov. 28 with a houseful of artists pitching in to benefit a great cause. It's Open Mic Night for the Indy Folk Series. This time, your tunes and contributions benefit Somethin' to Crow About, which brings transformative art experiences (and much-needed art supplies) to kids in low-income schools. (You'll enjoy a brief video at http://www.youtube.co/watch?v=PzQLb34k79s).

Open Mic Night features a series of solo and ensemble performers, each playing about 10 minutes or so (typically, three songs.) We've been told to expect some longtime favorites as well as performers new to the series--and you never know who will drop in to try new material or musical partners. Open Mic Night is a vehicle for rookies as well as veterans who enjoy the easy atmosphere and great sound (Hint: look for some delightful gems from our favorite Austrian soprano.)

6:00 p.m. Artists sign up (be there at 6:00 to make sure you get a place!)
7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Performance

Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis (UUI), 615 West 43rd St., Indianapolis.
Coffee, snacks and wine available. $8
suggested donation.

You're Invited: New Year's Eve Jam and Open House

Beth and Dan Henkel, together with Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Indy Folk Series, invite you to our umpteenth annual New Year's Eve Acoustic Jam and Open House. We hope you'll stop by for a while or stay all evening. This is a joyful mingling of diverse good folks, with informal music happening throughout. (Circle Fellowship co-sponsors the Indy Folk Series; expect good vibes, tunes and conversation.)

7:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009/January1, 2010

REPEATING LAST YEAR'S GREAT NEW LOCATION: Circle Fellowship (see below)

WHAT HAPPENS
If you've been part of this tradition, you know the drill:

Acoustic music in the front room, snacks in the middle, earnest conversation and conviviality everywhere.

- Musicians come and go throughout the evening, sharing tunes and talent
- Some folks stay 'til the ball drops; others drop by as schedules allow
- There's plenty of food and drink, but bring something if you'd like to share (beer/wine, champagne and safe/alternative beverages are welcome.)
Musicians are off the hook--just come and play!
- If they're your friends, they're ours--bring 'em!
- Children are welcome; we'll take turns with them caring for them.

We hope to see you for this post-Solstice celebration to usher in a great new year for all of us.
You needn't RSVP, but feel free to ask questions or to let us know you're coming: dan@...
 or 317-446-2666.

NOTE LOCATION: Getting there
After years hosting this party at Beth and Dan's Oxford Street home, we expanded last year to the comfortable and resonant Fellowship House at
1818 West 57th Street, Indianapolis (one block north and one block east of Kessler Blvd. and Michigan Rd.)

Map at www.cuuf.org
Going north on Michigan Rd., turn right at the first street north of Kessler Blvd. Look for the third house on the left. Park on either the west or east side of the house. Enter off the deck on the north side of the house and prepare to enjoy.

It's official, acoustic music lovers:

The Indy Folk Series, that bastion of traditional (musical) values, has determined that "This Internet thing may work out after all", to quote an unnamed IFS official.

We're now on Facebook! Soon, we may start tweeting. We promise never to hack the Pentagon, though heavy-metal Web sites should take the usual precautions.

Please check out our Facebook page and become our friend (in that way, I mean.)

Hello, music lovers:

Tim Grimm and Jan Lucas Grimm delivered the goods last night in the form of two sets of finely honed, personal, evocative, roots-based music. They were at their best, with harmonies, banter and rapport that swept up everyone in the room.

That room, the sanctuary-turned-concert-hall at UUI, had never sounded so good and never held so many for one of our concerts. It was magic, and aiding the artistry were Karl Zemlin's Sonic Artistry and the efforts of a juiced-up committee of volunteer co-producers.

Look for the magic to happen again on Saturday, March 20, when we hear the Maple Trio--three masters on a slew of string instruments. You've heard them as the musical core of Blueprint Music, and perhaps on their recordings. Catch them live in the ultimate listening room.

Meanwhile, check out the Indy Folk Series on Facebook. Enjoy Karl's photos and join the conversation.

Thanks to all who make the magic happen--and who support live acoustic music.
It matters.

Please note, music lovers:

The next Indy Folk Series event is March 27 (not March 20 as previously announced).
The Maple Trio is on a tear and we're excited to have a chance to hear them in the wonderful IFS listening-room setting. Scott Shoger gave the trio high marks in NUVO with his review of their new album, Samara.

As Scott puts it, the Maple Trio "transmutes the raw material of American music into something that's not quite classical, not quite folk, not easily classified. Their work is skillfully executed, ambitious and experimental, with a breathy, organic texture consistent with the group's adoration of nature, trees above all. It's in the same vein as the Appalachian Waltz record featuring three giants (Yo-Yo Ma, Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer)." Sounds irresistible, doesn't it? It is.

The Maple Trio is Matt Koher, Grover Parido, and Doug Sauter. The trio instrumentation includes violin, mandolin, guitar, cello, and banjo.Genre influences include traditional fiddle tunes, classical, ragtime, jazz, and tango. This gives the trio a cross-generational, cross-cultural appeal.

Hello, Music Lovers:

We're happy to announce the tenth season of the fabulous Indy Folk Series!
Here's the URL:
(or see the Indy Folk Series page on Facebook.)

See the season rundown is below, beginning Saturday, September 11th with  iota (the Indiana Old Time Ambassadors) . Let me also tip you off to an event that you'll want to see. The Phoenix Theater  is reprising Pure Prine Aug. 9-Sep. 12, featuring Bobbie Lancaster, our headliner next March 19. Created by Phoenix Theatre Producing Director Bryan Fonseca, Pure Prine is a celebration of the music of John Prine, one of this country's most talented singer/songwriters. With the talents of Tim Brickley, Jenni Gregory, Tim Grimm, Bobbie Lancaster, Jan Lucas and Michael Shelton, this evening of songs showcases the humor and charm of Prine's music.

INDY FOLK SERIES 2010-2011
All concerts Saturday, 7-9 p.m.
UUI (Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd St.)
Map at www.uui.org
$10 (12 and under free)

September 11
iota (Indiana Old Time Ambassadors)
iota is Erik Peterson on banjo, Deb Shebish on fiddle and Johnandrew Bellner on guitar. Driving, clever & soulful, this trio performs songs, fiddle tunes & ballads that are full of old-timey spirit.  iota brings forth the music of many native Hoosiers, past and present. The trio's fiddle, mandolin, guitar, ukulele and more support spirited vocals and harmonies.

October 16
Joe Peters & Linda Hicks
Enjoy the interplay of two singer-songwriters who are frequent collaborators. Joe Peters' songs hearken back to a time when young people sought the experience of peace, love and adventure and expressed this search in their music. Many of Joe's songs are influenced by eastern philosophies and were written while living and working overseas. Linda Hicks' music draws from the influences of bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, traditional, and contemporary folk music. Rich Warren of Sing Out! Magazine says "Not only can she write, but she also knows how to choose excellent songs and deliver them with sensitivity and conviction."

November 27
Open Mic Night with violinist and cultural ambassador William Harvey
Benefits Afghanistan National Institute of Music
Open Mic Night brings out an array of talent each Thanksgiving weekend. Pros try out new material; aspiring performers get a stage and warm reception. This year, proceeds from Open Mic Night will help train Afghan children, including orphans and street children, in western classical music and traditional Afghan music. Violinist William Harvey, a Juilliard graduate who founded Cultures in Harmony, teaches at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul. While visiting his native Indianapolis, William will give us a glimpse into his most recent forum for cultural diplomacy.            NOTE: Performers should arrive at 6:00 to sign up for a 10-minute set.

January 15
Sing! Uprising (singalong)
A favorite pastime and a first for the Indy Folk Series. The audience becomes the show as professionals, amateurs and civilians share in a spontaneous evening of music making. Dissipate the winter doldrums with song. Bring instruments and a copy of "Rise Up Singing" if you like. Proceeds will benefit a worthy cause.

February 19
Deep Fryed Acoustiblasters
The Deep Fryed Acoustiblasters play a mixture of Bluegrass, Blues, New-Acoustic, Rock and Jazz in an all-acoustic format. DFAB is made up of rock-solid players who bring their experience and maturity together to create captivating, soul-stirring rhythms – sometimes recalling the roots of original Bluegrass, other times breaking the boundaries to move listeners into a new era between tradition and progression. The energy of the Deep Fryed Acoustiblasters is complemented by four uniquely distinct voices. Individually, they offer an audience vocal variety, but combined bring it together for a perfectly harmonious blend.

March 19
Bobbie Lancaster
Bobbie Lancaster showed promise as a classical singer but found her voice in Americana, blues, roots and original music. Her performance was hailed as a highlight of the popular "Hoosier Springsteen" show, and she was chosen for the top-flight cast of "Pure Prine" at the Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis. Mike Kelsey of WFHB radio calls her "An amazing performer whose energy can transform a stage." According to NUVO newsweekly, "The woman can crank it up like Bonnie Raitt & Sheryl Crow."
