This has caused me to rethink this tune and the Bossa Nova. (an early solo
guitar performance that is fast somewhat virtuosic. Surprised me. I have often
told people to slow the bossas down. For the most part I am right. But, what if
I am wrong?
Jim
This is the earliest recording I know.
Tom Jobim

PS.
My friend, David Earle Johnson told me he was playing a party in Rio. David said
that on the breaks he and Tom would find a room and get high and play. This is
classic David Earle, "Jobim, why do you write the same tune over and over."

Maybe it is true, still; you don't get in a person's face and call em out.
Antonio Carlos Jobim?!

Jobim did have a style that he mined assiduously.
Gershwin said if he could get a fine one in 12 that was good. Jobim wrote many
pedestrian songs to get to his special ones. The marijuana reference, i don't
know. i wasn't there. it wouldn't surprise me or impress me none. You know Elis
Regina?
David was there. I believe that. I believe he spent days in voodun ceremonies in
Cuba. He is dead now and I have no way to lie detector the dude. I did not make
it up. The man could chant like no body's business. He might have exaggerated,
but I never knew him to lie.
History is basically the stories people remember.

He had a characteristic style, but I wouldn't accuse him of writing
the same song over and over. His music was far from a one-note samba.

Hi David,
That was kinda my point. You wouldn't, I wouldn't, but David Earle would. ;-) I
really wanted you to hear this particular version of Ipanema. It was a
revelation to me.

David,
Maybe you can help me. I am not sure I am doing it correctly, but I upload
things directly into the files. At one time there was a box to click that said
notify group of upload. That doesn't seem to be there anymore. I have uploaded
some very fine things that no one has commented on.
Lately:
1)Artur Rubinstein playing Chopin (I wanted to discuss "rubato" what it actually
means and its implications for solo jazz guitar.)
2)Maria Callas singing the big aria from Barber of Seville (wanted to discuss
virtuoso singing and how we might borrow/steal ideas from other languages.)
3) me explicating Some Other Time for solo gtr.
4) Laurindo Almeida's fantastic arrangement of Little Girl Blue

If no one at all comments after a few days i delete them so others have a lot of
headroom to upload things. I have also uploaded some of my music. It doesn't
stay up long because no one responds.
When I went to our files there was Jobim's Ipanema. I did "save link as" and it
opened my email. I copied the above from there and pasted it just as you see.
Hope it works.
Jim

Very Interesting. I too have often told people to slow the Bossa
down. Perhaps we now have an excuse to do the often played manic
speed NY style bossa?

What's the source of the recording? Anymore details?

Thank you Angelo.
I am not very sophisticated with this appliance. ;-)

Per usual, I have been informed by Andy Seyler. I asked him to tell me about
Jobim and this record (I am old, I call them records) was suggested. I don't
know for sure when this cut was recorded but it is on "Antonio Carlos Jobim: Do
Brazil Gold Collection Vol. 1. I have never heard Tom play so much, so fast. As
Alisdare mentioned, perhaps we should rethink bossa and include more of the
samba.
Those in the know please take this and run. I have long thought Jobim's music to
be the epitome of cool. Now I hear a heat that alters my thinking.
And, he is in F. The hit was in Db. Am I correct? I await further instruction.
Bless all,
Jim

I think we have a great resource here, but I am not sure how to make the best
advantage of it.
What I want to do is provide audio for the topics so we can HEAR what is being
discussed. I am doing something wrong and would appreciate any help.
The URL I posted did not work. I got it from the file itself..........???
Do many people check out the files of this group?
We have a fair amount of space to fill although when I have tried to upload big
zip files, I am told that there is a limit.
I would humbly ask the moderators to explain the upload parameters (for the
umteenth time, I bet, lo siento) and procedures. I believe that we should not
only talk and write about music, but Listen to it as well.
Thanks for letting computer amateurs participate in this group.

I never saw the post w/a url but as I said I probably missed it.
Those are finicky things to deal with sometimes if there are < or >
before or after the url and you include these the server says
`naaaahhhh, I can't find that'. Some times a url is more than fits on
one line and if you don't get it all... same deal. But I for one
like listening to jazz and have a good system on the back end of this
mac to enjoy it with.

Keep trying we all value your input.

Jim,
As I mentioned in a previous reply, I like to use url clippers. These aids
chage a URL of 100 characters to one of, maybe, 20.
These are two that are commonly used:
http://www.snipurl.com and http://www.tinyurl.com . Snip is my fave...

What you do is:
Upload your file to the archives.
Copy the URL of the file from the address (URL) bar of your browser.
Open the Snipurl (or Tinyurl) page.
There will be a text box into which you past the address you just copied.
There will be a button (snipit) or (make tinyurl) which you click.
This will create a small url which you copy and paste into the message you
send to us (or to anybody).
We click on it... and viola! it opens to your file...
Practice it a bit. I think it's one of the best aids to communicating on the
web...

Hi everybody,

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you all, and in this case Jim Mings,
for all the knowledge and wisdom you have put onto this list.
Regarding that version of "Garota de Ipanema", I don't think Jobim could play
that fast. I have another version on a cassete that is undoubtely the same
player, but it is recorded live. It is a bit more exciting, more "RUBATO" if you
want. Unfortunately I never knew who was the player.

Just now I was searching on deezer (I love deezer!) and I think I found the
player: Baden Powell! Check it out:

http://www.deezer.com/#music/result/all/baden%20powell%20garota

Joao Pedro

PS: Does anyone recall that wonderful site that had a lot of Jobim scores and
arrangings, some hand written? I have been looking for a while without
results...

There were two videos on that page one poorly lit and recorded [ lots
of spurious noise ] but well played. The other was well lit with a
much brighter guitar [not as good a sound as the Baden Powell and
quite as well played. It seemed a little faster too. Do you know who
that guy was? Just curious. He played some cool voicings in the head
of the tune to achieve the chord, melody, and bass parts. The darker
version sounded like the same positions on the guitar but I just
didn't see .......

Hi Ron,

No, I have no idea who they are. But beeing a classical guitar student myself, I
think they learned that from some transcription of Baden Powell version. It does
not have that spontaneity of jazz guitar (like Baden Powel version had, for
instance). Anyway, it is a great work, and I wouldn't mind learning it as
well...

Thanks for your research. It does sound like Baden Powell. He and Jobim were

Hi Jim

You're welcome, it is nice to be able to help once in awhile!

By the way, do you know Joao Bosco? It is a Brasilian guitar virtuoso, a bit

Nor would I. Songs like "Stone Flower", "Waters of March", etc, I think
would support the notion that he didn't write the same song over & over;
even "One Note..." has changes under the melody. Heck, if I could make
the kind of impact Jobim made writing the same thing over & over, I'd sure
go for it. I like his songs, and enjoy trying to find "new stuff" in
there every
time I play 'em. My drummer is always saying, "I don't want to play
another
bossa", and I wonder why...

One of my faves is the little-played "Bonita". It sounds like none of the
others I know of...

That's Jobim himself, eh? Very nice!

Hi Guys

I find it very easy to go to the files for our group. I am also in other
music groups that have iterations of their group name just for the purpose
of having a larger file base.

It is easy to listen to the Jobim recording that you (Jim) have posted there
for us. Thank you. And very, very interesting.

It is not at all my favorite version of the song, but then he grew up with
the bossa and other latin rhythms and perhaps, is far more tired of the
slower approach than I am. Personally I can't get enough, or play enough of
those slow, driving, controlled, but powerful and so full of life and
energy, rhythms from South America. But then I haven't played Girl From
Ipanema nine thousand times like some other musicians have had to.

Here is a hypothesis for you all: Ipanema is the most requested song in the
soft jazz business. Additionally: it used to be Melancholy Baby.

All the best, John

PS Jim I love your idea of us sharing music as a basis for discussion and an
open sharing of musical ideas.
