Dear members,
It is our practice to announce any relevant jazz events, radio/TV programmes, etc, two weeks in advance. However, JazzSG may not receive such information in time. Thus your contribution is greatly appreciated.
So if you know of anything relevant which is happening in 2 weeks time that we have not announced, please email us. Thank you.
It is a pity if you were unware of this TV programme. Nevertheless, here is a summary of the show.
Film Art: The Glenn Miller Story (1953)
Sun 18 Mar
9-11.15pm
Arts Central TV
This show tells the story of the great big band/swing legend. Interestingly, there was also brief appearances of other legends such as Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa themselves!
A large part of the show explained the background behind favourites like Pennsylvania 6500, Moonlight Serenade, Tuxedo Junction, Little Brown Jug and String of Pearls.
Interestingly too, on the same day at about 7pm, Channel 5 showed Pearl Habour starring Ben Affleck! As you would have guessed, Glenn received a letter from the U.S. War Department.
Glenn's job was to conduct a military band. However, in the midst of a parade, in disregard to military protocol, Capt. Miller ran to the band while Gen. Arnold was inspecting the troops, took over the baton and led the band to play what Americans loved - his music!
As expected he was reprimanded by his superior. However, it was the far-sighted general who praised Miller for boosting the troops' morale. Thereafter, Glenn's music is heard over radio to set troops and citizens "In the Mood".
In one scene, when soldiers took cover after a bomb was dropped, Glenn and his band however did the heroic thing and continued to play.
Unfortunately, the show had to end with a tragic note when Maj. Miller boarded a small military airplane in bad weather and disappeared.
It is not too long that Singapore also remembered the end of World War II. But for the jazz community in Singapore, it is also a time for us to salute Maj. Glenn Miller.
