YMCA – Central Singapore CDC

Proms @ The Park

Saturday 20 October 2007

4 - 5pm Fringe Activities

5 - 6.30pm Concert

Botanic Gardens, Symphony Stage

Monday, 22 October 2007

Singapore Stompers - Dixieland

The Singapore Stompers, Singapore’s only Dixieland band, opened the concert. As the Stompers have been collaborating with the Lindy Hop Ensemble for several years, their presence was expected.

Lindy Hop Ensemble (LHE)

Towards the end of the performance, the Lindy Hop Ensemble (LHE) joined in to a swing tune before leaving to prepare for another number.

While the members of the Savoy-style Jitterbugs Swingapore (the other of the two Lindy Hop schools) swear allegiance to traditional big band and swing, the LHE fuses Lindy Hop with non-jazz genres such as rock-n-roll, modern pop and even bangra!

Windworkz Big Band

The Windworkz Big Band ended the concert with good, old, big band swing such as Come Fly With Me and Route 66, and also rock-n-roll, Beatles and pop songs in swing style. Like many big bands, they also played non-swing pieces such as the bossa nova favourite So Nice (Summer Samba), Latin and pop hits.

As it was YMCA’s event, it was not surprising to hear Village People’s YMCA & see the LHE doing the YMCA dance – the one whereby you form the Y, M, C, A letters with your arms.

Every dancer knows that it is not fun to dress up and dance in the tropics. With all the performances done, the LHE could dress down in comfortable T-shirts and dance with the band on stage.

While the band may be relatively unknown, it comprises rather good musicians as well as saxophone, trombone and trumpet soloists.

As expected, the audience shouted “Encore!” which the band obliged. While the crowd wanted more, the band, unable to accede to another encore, decided to wrap up and swing with an “Auld Lang Syne”.
