Goldfield fiddling trio plays Gypsy Jazz! The first fiddling trio of its kind in Singapore, Goldfield comprises of three talented individuals exploring fiddle music from different cultures on the violin, banjitar and double bass. Most notably, the group holds the distinction of being the only local Irish fiddling trio and has played for events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations at the The Dubliners Irish Pub.
For two nights at the Concourse, Goldfield fiddling trio members Lester Kong (violin), Jason Loo (rhythm guitar) and Joel Loh (double bass), will be interpreting classic jazz pieces with influences from French gypsy musician Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. They will be joined by accomplished guitarist Amos Tadete and together they will take Goldfield’s sound into an exciting new direction.
Did you know?
1. Gypsy Jazz or jazz manouche is a genre of music pioneered by French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his group the Quintette du Hot Club de France in the 1930s. The music relies on rhythm guitars and bass to produce a swinging rhythm (think “boom-chick boom-chick”) as well as lead instruments that play the melody on top of that.
2. Django Reinhardt only played guitar with the index and middle fingers of his left hand as the rest of his fingers were badly damaged in a fire accident. Still, this has not stopped him from playing fast melodic improvisations that are an inspiration to guitarists even today.
Repertoire
1) sweet georgia brown
2) night and day
3) Oh Lady be Good
4) you know you belong to somebody else
5) one note samba
6) summertime
7) it don't mean a thing
