Does anyone know the year--or even better, the date--when the Count
Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras first came to Singapore? I know
it was sometime in the 70s but I don't have concrete proof.
Upon visiting their home page, their music will play automatically non-stop. If you are new to TBNH, why not try "C'est Magnifigue", "Jump N Move" & "Never Stop".
Najip Ali & DJ Aldrin with another Indian percussionist also gave an interesting opening with a contemporary piece fused with ethnic Indian drums beats.
Subject: Fri & Sat 19-20 Sep: FREE International Jazz Bands at CQ!!!
Sorry for the very late notice, but this is an event you cannot miss!
Unbelievable but true. Renowned acid jazz group The Brand New Heavies (UK) is here for a free performance! And if you are lucky, you may get to swing with the Jive Talking too.
“Back with a vengeance.” So said The Hollywood Reporter’s Craig Rosen. The Heavies’ triumphant return marks the re-emergence of one of the most innovative, influential, R&B and funk groups of the last 15-plus years. In the mid-1980s, after bonding over their love of American funk and soul music - notably James Brown and the Meters - Simon Bartholomew, Jan Kincaid and Andrew Levy formed The Brand New Heavies as an instrumental outfit. Based in west London, the band fitted perfectly into the rare groove and then acid jazz club scenes at the time, which also became associated with other notable long standing career artists such as Jamiroquai and Incognito.
Jive Talking (SG)
Jive Talking is a veteran Singaporean band with years of great success. Having performed together with some of the world’s most famous musicians like B.B.King, Kenny G, James Ingram and many more, the band never fails to capture the audience’s attention.
Urban Jazz Crossover
Quasimode (JP)
Quasimode a 4 piece Jazz band based in Tokyo, Japan and was formed in 2002. Their sound is based on authentic jazz rhythms from the 60s and 70s and has been linked with similar Jap-Jazz bands like Soil & Pimp Session and Sleepwalker. With a mixed club and latin feel they deliver all their music live and have gained a strong support in their native Japan. Quasimode consists of Yusuke Hirado (Piano), Takahiro "Matzz" Matsuoka (Percussions), Kazuhiro Sunaga (Bass), and Takashi Okutsu (Drums).
CUBANIA (SG)
Cubania is a seven piece Cuban Dance band with the ability to play Latin music and other forms of popular music i.e. Funk, R&B, Jazz, Latin Jazz, POP. The entertainment is high energy with appeal to both Salsa/Latin music lovers and contemporary music fans.
DON (SG)
Don the debonair DJ by night releases his diverse musical taste of mashed up eclectism for the wholesome souls. Out to tease punters with his spiritual feelings & readings of the floor with his blend of hip hop, afro- funk soul - Baltimore to Baile Funk, deep house, broken Latin jazz to the twisting of minimalism its his techno game.

Congratulations! Singapore's Mr. Hady Mirza was voted the first Asian Idol!
Golden Age For Music Professionals?
Music professionals in Singapore and elsewhere never had it so good. In the past, young people had little choice but to aspire to be bankers, doctors, lawyers, managers, etc. Today, even bankers, deputy public prosecutors, engineers and management consultants are ditching the corporate ladder to pursue their love for music, including jazz.
Is Singapore Proud Of Her Musical Talents?
It was not an easy win for Hady though. For example, Indonesia and Malaysia also had strong contenders and a much larger population. Prior to the competition, Ken Lim, Hady's manager and also Singapore and Asian Idol judge, was concerned that Singapore was not enthusiastic enough about her own talents. He also thought Hady had a 50-50 chance.
But Look Beyond the Singapore Benchmark
While the Singapore vote is important, it may not be enough to win Hady the title. Unlike the national Idol competition, the Asian Idol audience had to vote for two countries (e.g. Singapore and Malaysia) to ensure that countries with a very small population like Singapore do not lose out. The competition thus in a way forced our artistes to set their sights beyond our own shores. The Asian Idol has certainly forced our artistes to raise the benchmark. What’s next? A Singaporean International Idol?
Let The Good Times Roll!
Growth in the general music scene in Singapore is certainly good for the Singapore jazz scene too. The jazz community could leverage on Singapore’s new found confidence in music to aggressively promote and grow the Singapore jazz scene.
