NAFH 32 Matt Mcdowell - Headlong Into The Fire 3" -
McDowell's most recent solo outing finds him honing his vision to
form an extended composition incorporating layers of electronics,
organ, bells, free drumming and a healthy dose of acid-fried guitar.
Elements of early minimalism, musique concrete (ala Richard Maxfield,
etc.), and the Neil Young/Loren Mazzacane Connors school of guitar
playing combine to create a deep listening exercise akin to waking up
on fire to find yourself lost at sea. $7 USA $10 Non- USA

-----

NAFH 31 Alexander Turnquist - Sleep Chapter 3" -
a dense layer of acoustic drone that slowly develops, shifts, and
collides with itself around the distant sound of a flowing river.
Alexander hails from Eastern Idaho and spent much of his youth developing
an appreciation for the rugged mountains and forests that surrounded him.
Of equal inspiration were his parents, his father being an accomplished
guitarist and his mother a photographer with an eye for nature.
In his spare time, it is not unusual to find Alex wandering in the Tetons,
immersing himself in volunteer work or handcrafting custom woodwork for his
father's log homes business.

As for his music, categorization does not come easy. Each song contains a
prose buried deep between the acoustic layers, waiting to be discovered. The
best advice one can give when considering his unique guitar compositions is
this: Don't just hear, but listen. You will be better for the
experience." Ron Thyberg

NAFH 29 The Cutest Puppy in the World - Apotrope - 2xCDR
The Cutest Puppy in the World is Bryan Rhodes (of Baltimore) and Layne
Garrett (of Washington, DC). We explore emergent forms, extremes of
saturated and empty space, scorched remnants of that tune you've been
humming for three days. We play electric piano, analog synthesizer,
combo organ, guitars, found-object percussion, thumb piano, bass
clarinet, Styrofoam, whatever is within reach. Our music is all improvised.

"Apotropaism is a ritual way of warding off evil by depicting it, for
instance by making an image of some evil threat." (Torben Sangild, "The
Aesthetics of Noise", ubu.com/papers/noise.html)... Gregory Whitmore's
vantage in the cover photo overlooks Kabul Afghanistan, where they are
fashioning talismans and amulets, charms and jujus with weary
abandon.... The world, we figure, could use a little well-directed dark
matter.... $12 USA $15 Non - USA

NAFH 28 Eric Carbonara - This May Be The End/Long Hallway, Three
Slightly Open Doors 3" -
This May Be The End is a tapestry of intricately repeating guitar
phrases woven into layers of interlocking, syncopated, phase in/phase
out patterns...a melodic rhythm that will keep your head bobbing as
much as spinning. Melodic lines (often expressed through layered
ebows) enter as quickly as they depart, leaving no central theme
except the interlocking Reichian pattern. This may be the end feels
almost like two pieces of music with a bridge of synthesized waves
between the two patterns, the latter being a more subtle come down to
the vortex of chaotic bliss in the first section.

Long Hallway, Three Slightly Open Doors is a step in a different
direction, without a central rhythmic or melodic theme, the piece is a
beautifully meandering stumble of notes falling from the guitar. A
perfect counterpart to the first piece's tenseness, Long Hallway is
loose, patient and indirect about it's objectives, causing the
listener to react more than anticipate.
Recorded in his home studio, Nada Sound Studio, from 2003 to 2006,
both pieces are a far cry from Carbonara's solo guitar work, showing
his depth as an arranger/composer in the studio beyond that of a solo
improviser. $7 USA $10 Non USA

NAFH 27 Robert Horton - Sleep, Wake, Hope, and Then CD -
These are the most recent pieces by Robert Horton, striving to create
an album full of recordings that shimmer and change the light. On two
pieces Horton enlists the magic of gong-ologist and percussionist Dean
Moore. Dean is a hidden treasure who lives and plays in Seattle and is
a member of the group Yuan, along with Horton, Michael Shannon and
Edward Guerriero.
The rest of the pieces are Horton conjuring spirits with his homemade
instruments, teasing objects with contact microphones, squeezing tones
till they splinter into high harmonics and weaving webs of fractured
bytes into modal vodka.
Horton's has performed and recorded for almost 30 years in a variety
of outlets. He founded the Appliances, part of SF's first wave of punk
bands in 1979, and formed the tribal noise drone group Plateau
Ensemble in 1983. Since then, he has been a prominent contributor to
the last two revolutions in home recording, both the cassette culture
of the 80s and 90s and the CDR zeitgeist of the 00s. Robert records
under his own name, Egghatcher, and Future Ears. He is currently a
member of Kyrgyz, Beautiful Friend, Infinite Article, Broken Mask, and
the duo with Tom Carter. Co-Released With The Music Fellowship $12 USA

NAFH 25 Andy Futreal - Like Twilight Bleeding 3"-
A collection of three pieces on acoustic guitar recorded at home on
three different evenings in the fall of 2006. Two pieces, "like
twilight bleeding" and "kaftan" were single improvised takes recorded
direct to two-track. The first stretches out in the evening light from
a brief series of high notes to explore a central theme - breaking,
scattering and ultimately reforging it; the latter piece is shorter
and frenetic -- maybe catching a thread of older musics from parts
east. The third piece, "ghosts of twilight", recorded onto a rickety
old 4 track cassette with acoustic guitar and ebow, brings shades of
"like twilight bleeding" back to creak and howl as things wind down
some time past midnight.

Andy grew up in eastern North Carolina and has been residing in
Cambridge, UK, for the past 7 years. When not involved in the day job
of cancer genetics, he plays guitar quite a bit. His more proximal
influences range over the map (literally and musically) and include
Monk and Feldman to African guitarists Phuzekhemisi, Madala Kunene,
Manfila Kante and Ali Farke Toure to the Chinese erhu of A Bing, the
American folk blues of Leadbelly and Cuban Son of Arsenio Rodriguez.
Filtering and merging these and other sounds that are constantly
moving the air at home and work, his music is difficult to pin down to
an easily categorised school or style. Over the past decade or so he
has collected a stack of DAT tapes, cassette rumbles and digital two
track recordings of music that came to mind - primarily on acoustic
guitars, but also other stringed instruments and the occasional foray
onto the piano -- as well as things more noisy. He and his brother
Michael have a previously self-released cd as the Offramps -"The dirt
roads of nations", as well as an improv acoustic blues track on the
recent Harha-Askel comp "Goin' Down Slow - music for acoustic guitar".
This is his first solo release. $7 USA $10 Non-USA

NAFH 21 Droopy Septum - Howling Lands, Whispering Leaves CDR-
Droopy Septum is the solo project and sound creations of Edinboro
Pennsylvania's Ryan Emmett. His sonic explorations range from minimal
drones to harsh noise to carefully constructed sonic landscapes.

"I was in a dead stare. Concentrating on nothing but the grain of the
wood floors and waiting for the coffee to gurgle. The new Droopy
Septum, 'Howling
Lands, Whispering Leaves', was playing in the background. A great
combination, thoughts of nothing while listening to sounds that don't
accurately describe anything. Though they are all familiar
noises/sounds... they are detached from the environments. Without
having the environment for reference, I am left to imagine fields of
static hums
and locusts, wind, trees, gravel, water, frost, lawnmowers, sounds of
building things, cars turning over, generators idling, crickets,
etc….but all of
these sounds wrapped into one solo representation. At times the
noises begin to feel repetitious, but then another layer of something
kind of creeps out of the
dark like a pedophile to destroy any evidence of pattern. Anyways,
this is one of the better albums I've heard in a long time. Every kid
should haggle their parents for the modest donation of 6 or 8 bucks.
And any responsible person should have one for their
own." -- Jordan P. Frey $8 USA $11 Non - USA
