I have this theory about Carrie Underwood, the Oklahoma-born Barbie who won American Idol a few years back. Beneath the perfect blonde locks and sleeping-beauty smile there lurks a rogue rock chick dying to claw out. Do not believe me? Her show set lists and iPod play list are peppered with metal heroes. Her brassy high notes belong in a Heart song, not a hoedown. Her band is well-versed in the Who. And she loves lasers. Loves them. Not enough evidence? Just wait for her encore.
Until she goes Joan Jett on us, Underwood, who performed at the St. Pete Times Forum on Friday, will dutifully play the part of perfectly packaged country star. In the span of just two albums, the 25-year-old has become one of the best-selling artists of the 21st century. She has cultivated a cute routine that has kept her hot with Carrie Nation, that is, the moms and daughters who made up the smallish, but loud local crowd of 7,750.
The Vote for the Worst campaign has did it again! They managed to keep the worst American Idol contestants in the show: Amanda Overmyer and Danny Noriega.
Their website reads:
We helped save Amanda and Danny and helped boot a pretty good singer like Alaina. Amanda and Danny were definitely in real danger, yet they stuck around, so great job helping to vote for them this week! Now let's get them into the top 12 and on to Idol Gives Head.
Indeed, last night the results were announced and Jason Yeager, Alexandrea Lushington, Alaina Whitaker and Robbie Carrico all went home. Alaina Whitaker declared that there was no way she could go on with her exit performance, but her fellow contestants propped her up and Carly and Amanda offered backup-vocal support.
When Ryan first asked Alexandrea Lushington and Amanda Overmyer to stand, most people probably thought that Overmyer was the one to go. Well, wrong, you obviously didn't take into account the number of people who want to mess around with American Idol and go with the VFTW campaign.
Tuesday, the top 10 guys on American Idol performed: David Archuleta, Robbie Carrico, Jason Castro, David Cook, Chikezie, David Hernandez, Michael Johns, Luke Menard, Danny Noriega and Jason Yeager.
Indestructible rock & roll gladiatrix Joan Jett has been hitting it for over three decades, yet everything she does still delivers that perfected mix of big, dirty guitar, throaty passion and gutter-tutored volatility — and if it’s a case of arrested development, we should all be so gloriously dysfunctional. Making a very rare visit to her boulevard of very bad memories (just the manner in which she pronounces “Hollywood” sounds as if there were guano upon her tongue), Jett and her trusty Blackhearts, with bitching, long-overdue new album Sinner in tow (sample lyric: “relax/while I pound your ass”), shall doubtless do magnificent battle, a skirmish certain also to be coloured by the recent tragic loss of former bandmate Sandy West. Vulnerable, vicious and certifiably brilliant, Joan Jett remains an incomparable force.
"After that, we take a quick break to let Carlos get back ahead of schedule again, with a special issue focusing on Krypto, and where he's been since 'Infinite Crisis' and why, and that issue I mentioned about Superman's early days in the big city," continued Busiek. "Then Carlos returns for the next half of the 'Camelot Falls' arc, which will feature Arion, Perseus Hazard and Squad K, some New Gods, Power Girl and the question of the 'Third Kryptonian,' and a bunch more. After that, there's a special event that I'll let Matt Idelson announce, but we'll be building up to the debut of the new Insect Queen, revelations about LexCorp, outer-space adventure, more on Intergang, and plenty else to keep Superman hopping."
On the other hand, Mary was perplexed by Peter's comment and lack of explanation. She thought she always gave him what he wanted and that he was happy with it. She approached the matter of plex with Peter as she would any project. She'd watched him, worked out what he enjoyed, put them together with enough variety to often surprise. She'd even gone as far as to purchase special underwear and night gowns. She'd gone out and bought a whip, for Christ's sake! A whip! No mind it'd frightened him near death but still, she'd done it for him. To hear him express doubt or displeasure was unexpected.
So unnerved was Mary, she took an inordinately long time in the shower, pondering Peter's words, and was late arriving at work.
A few days later, Mary missed a step in dance and fell. It stopped the class cold. There was an audible gasp as everyone watched her gather her things and calmly leave the room. Another person would have probably exited in hysteria, but for Mary, silently padding down the passage and the stairs was her hysterics. She went into Juan's for supper and stood before the glass case, not feeling like having the green salad, neatly arranged in the plastic container. She left without ordering and knew then that she was beginning to unravel. Furthermore, she hadn't heard from Peter, despite her telephoning his work and home and leaving messages at both.
For most treens, going back to school also means heading to the mall for back to school clothes and accessories. According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending is estimated to reach $17.6 billion, up from $13.4 billion in 2005, and fueling this growth will be electronic and apparel purchases. More than half of teens, aged 13 to 17 will spend at least $200 on back to school clothes, according to a survey by Mall of America. Nearly a third of them will spend even more.
This school year, 80's revival is "in" says Sara Rogers of the Mall of America. Leggings, layers, chunky jewelry, oversized sweaters and skinny denim all the rage for teenagers and tweens alike. The "Goth" look is another trend gaining mainstream popularity. Inspired by movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" parents are approving this "look," so more teens will be sporting skull and cross-bone t-shirts and belt buckles. If teens are seeking a new wardrobe or simply spicing it up with the hottest accessories, the following items are must-haves when returning to school:
Wills was given permission to take a break from his officer training at Sandhurst in order to take part in the Hackett Rundle Cup, while his fun-loving sibling, who is well-known for his talent on the polo field, was also eager to strut his stuff.
As the two Wales boys did their best to help the Army team overcome their Navy challengers, their leading ladies Kate and Chelsy chatted warmly on the sidelines. The first in line's longtime girlfriend was looking pretty in a halterneck summer dress, while the South African student kept cool in a simple white skirt and top.
Zara also donned her riding gear on Saturday afternoon, although she wasn't taking part in the main fixture. Princess Anne's daughter, who was named European eventing champion last year, was relying on pedal power instead as she showed off her sporting skills in a game of bicycle polo
“Today, on the birthday of our great nation, the cast and crew of ‘In Your Dreams,’ including myself personally, urges the Broadway entertainment community, and the entertainment community nationwide, to speak up on behalf of this proposal for the creation of a Department of Peace -– a proposal that currently has the support of 73 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and two members of the U.S. Senate, and has additionally been supported by resolutions of the city councils of Atlanta and San Jose, among others.
“The Department of Peace legislation -- House Resolution 3760, Senate Resolution 1756, the 'Department of Peace and Nonviolence Act' -- would allocate $10 billion, the equivalent of just 2 percent of the national defense budget, to establish a Department of Peace. It would include a cabinet level adviser to the president and a Peace Academy similar to West Point, where students could learn conflict resolution techniques to deal with issues ranging from war to prison rehabilitation and bullying in schools.
“This effort is part of an international effort to establish departments of peace in other countries has caught on in Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.
"Surveys conducted in other countries of the world -- such as France, Denmark and England -- show that people in those countries believe that America is currently the Number One threat to the future stability of the globe -- putting us even ahead of Iran as a threat to peace. The creation of a Department of Peace would serve to reassure people in other countries of America’s true desire for peace.
"In conclusion, the cast and crew of 'In Your Dreams' wishes you all a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July holiday -- and we hope to hear you all speaking out in support of this important issue this coming July Fourth, our nation’s latest birthday.”
Farrow urges some of the leading lights of the American entertainment community -- respected and vocal entertainers such as Susan Sarandon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie O’Donnell, Bette Midler, Ashley Olsen, Michael Eisner, Morgan Fairchild, Star Jones, Lindsay Lohan, Idina Menzel, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Zac Posen, Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Barbra Streisand, Nathan Lane, Matthew Perry, Roseanne Barr, Hilary Duff, Matthew Broderick, Joan Rivers, Beyonce Knowles, Diane von Furstenberg, Lenny Kravitz, Cher, and others -- to consider taking a moment today to speak out on this issue to raise its public profile.
Monsoon is my favourite season. The air is so clean that when it stops raining, you can see all the way up to Matheran, with the ghats looking like pale blue cutouts against a denim sky. With the first rains, Mumbai is revived. Trees put out new leaves, the gulmohurs glows gloriously, outshining the newly washed red tile roofs of upper Colaba. I look down from the 16th floor on to red roofs, green palm fronds, red flowers, green leaves. The little back road is carpeted with fallen red flowers, a path fit for a bride. It's the right time to plant a tree on the portions of pavement still bare, time to make Mumbai a little greener.
Many successful models work part-time. It means they can carry on with the ‘day job’ and fit modelling into weekends, evenings and holidays. Kitten Von Mew, 25, is a receptionist in Warwick but also a successful vintage pin up model specialising in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. She has turned her passion for everything to do with these decades into a second career.
‘A local photographer approached me at a local gig and asked me if I wanted to do a shoot. I thought he was joking. I said no, but we kept bumping to each other and eventually I said yes,’ she explained. Since then she has worked at events associated with the Second World War, has been Marilyn Monroe and recently worked at a promotional event at Blenheim Palace.
Her advice for would be models is that it is hard work. ‘I do a lot of research on the periods. I study photographs and search through magazines. I also only buy genuine vintage clothes, that is vital to get the look right. For example you need to have a genuine girdle underneath to make the dresses hang properly. I scour second hand shops and the Internet,’ she added.
Based in Stratford-on-Avon, she is well placed to travel for modelling assignments. ‘If the job is right and there is time to plan then I can do it, added Kitten, aged 25.
"The great beauty for me," she said of parasols, "is they're a good conversation piece. I always have one in the car. I might use a really exotic one or silk one in New York. Out in the country, I'll use cottons with wood handles. One of my favorites is an embroidered, black eyelet cotton batiste. I call it `Morticia.' I thought of the design while at a funeral, where it was brutally hot."

Among other things, not least that she is a showgirl on the Italian weather channel Che Tempo Fa, the former model and TV hostess is Mrs Francesco “Il Bello” Totti. The glamour couple may have very little to talk about when they are together, since he has barely mastered Italian and prefers to communicate in Roman dialect. The, ahem, Totti totty married the Roma captain in 2005 when already pregnant in a ceremony that was broadcast live on Italian television. But the former free spirit (there are nearly-nude pictures in circulation, apparently) may currently be under house arrest, since she and Totti now have a son named Christian. Mr Traditional — whose lack of intellectual capacity was underlined when a raft of Totti jokes (they included the gem “ The three hardest years for Totti? Class one of elementary school”) was printed and whose childhood ambition was to become a petrol pump attendant — explained that his first-born had to be male, so the famous Totti legacy would continue. To the horror of the medical establishment, the Tottis insisted Christian was born under water. Nobody knows why.
I just posted some pix I took back in 1984, when Joan & Co. where in

Only Garbage and Peaches fulfilled the formula, alternating equally between the band's hits - or an alarmingly stoked cover of Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" - and the rapper's eagerly filthy outbursts. As the Karen Finley of rap, Peaches paired perfectly with the subversive feminist power of Garbage's Shirley Manson.
• Bio: After leaving infamous all-girl rock band The Runaways (which also featured Joan Jett) in 1979, guitarist Lita Ford launched a solo career in the ’80s; her marginal vocal talent made up for with hot six-string skills and hotter leather bustier/fishnets combos. Today, Ford hangs out on MySpace.com a lot and crank-calls Joan Jett for kicks.
• Hit: “Kiss Me Deadly”
• Buy the CD:Best of Lita Ford (1992)
• Trivia: Ford went to a party last Saturday night, but neither got laid nor got in a fight.
• Lita Ford will perform a cover version of the current pop hit: “Sk8tr Boi” by Avril Lavigne
YOU KNOW HOW sometimes you hear a song on the radio, while you're pulling out of a big-box store parking lot, without any fun-filled big boxes but instead with boring essentials like mouthwash, Little Debbie snack cakes, and Depends, and you're feeling like a shopping zombie, and 107.7 the Bone is cranked because you were listening to "Kashmir" at the proper stadium-worthy level to get in the "mood" for Robert Plant at the Paramount July 19? That certain number comes blaring out of the speakers, and everything suddenly looks way 1983 once more.
It was '83 when Joan Jett first soothed the ruffled feathers of the poor dove she was dragging into a filthy-fun ménage à trois in "The French Song," and damn if it didn't feel that way again when I heard it recently, played in anticipation of Bastille Day on Little Steven's syndicated Underground Garage show.
Who is this? I wondered. It was too pop to be Girlschool, too rude to be Heart, too punk to be the Breeders. The song just goes on and on, hammering home the French-language chorus as relentlessly as Jett courts her male or female cherry bomb, with what seems like about a dozen guitar breaks. "J'aime faire l'amour sur tout à trois," Jett browbeats her ménage, though judging from the way the band plays off each other, I suspect she's really bellowing at the three other Blackhearts. That's amore! "I know what I am, I am what I am," she chants toward the close, before jamming in that last rhyme with the blunt force of Mariska Hargitay knocking down the door of a sex offender. "Don't think that I'm uncouth, I only speak the truth."
Cloddish, but so excellent and a "gem," as Little Steven put it later, after following the track with the equally ass-kicking "Talk Talk," by Music Machine, and "Rock 'n' Roll Napalm," by the Resistoleros. They're not all from '83, but the three seemed like miraculous, mean little irresistible blasts through the fog, propelled by the power of refusal.
Lewis has the ability to coo seductively one minute, only to raise a convincing Joan Jett snarl the next. As soon as she walked on stage, all eyes locked onto the singer Rolling Stone has dubbed ``the indie rock crush queen.''
The bouncy pop of ``It's a Hit'' started things off, its sugary arrangement contrasting sharply with Lewis' dark, biting lyrics. Rilo Kiley's country influence peeked through on ``Hail to Whatever You Found in the Sunlight That Surrounds You.'' The band then shifted into driving alt rock on ``Portions For Foxes,'' with Lewis pulling a Marlene Dietrich bycrying out ``Baby I'm bad news'' to the hopeful single men in the crowd. Rilo Kiley's penchant for dramatic torch songs came to light on the '60s r & b/country hybrid of ``I Never,'' with Lewis dropping her guitar to plunk on a piano and reincarnate Patsy Cline.
Interaction was minimal, with the band connecting to the hipster couples dominating the crowd through the emotive force of its tunes rather than lengthy chat sessions. The audience didn't seem to mind one bit.
Fans of the criminally short-lived TV drama Freaks and Geeks can
finally relax. Months after the entire series was released on DVD,
the music is out on CD, with important songs, including the theme
tune, Joan Jett's Bad Reputation, intact. Warren Zevon's Poor, Poor
Pitiful Me, Rush's The Spirit of Radio and Styx's Come Sail Away are
among the smoke-filled memory joggers. And the icing? Original cast
members singing tunes that became memorable scenes, including "Nick"
and "Millie" doing the Doobie's Jesus Is Just Alright. Rock on.
