"Retreat to Italy" sounds kinda like some drug black hole, too. Or the hole
was rosier, and better drugs were to be found in Italy. Think Johnny Carroll
in Paris wrapped in heroin warmth and the idiotic idolatry of froggish dolts
to his greasy pompadoured balladeering echoing through dank cabarets like so
many Charlie Feathers imitators lined up in Warholian Elvis-triptychs
send-ups, only with vain Tav Falco (of Panther Burns notoriety) substitutes'
dodgy mimicry of the Elvis FLAMING STAR pose and pout, heads bobbing in mid
nod and drool.

Huh? Somebody tell me quick what it was I just said!

Think Richard Hamilton, the British Pop artist on Scott Walker's scrips, who
had that perfect Meek sensibility.

Some artists never achieve the greatness contained in Thane Russal's 2 1/2
minute joy romp through a song like "Security"... a barely contained sense
of self-control spurred on by the wicked guitar lead that races for the
devil through out. This record must have driven Andrew Loog Oldham apeshit
considering that Mick and "the boys" rarely if ever reached that same
intense rush of testosterone and teenage frenzy contained but just barely
restrained on vinyl. Interesting that this take is credited to Gary Glitter
as producer. Can you imagine the porn mags that bedecked the floor of the
studio for that session?

Thane is a little lost scuzzy boy. He starts out with stage fright and loses
it, victoriously. Enough now.

Thanks for the Delerium site. And I welcome any comments about Meek-era
British or Aussie rock'n'rollers. How about Normie Rowe, or The Loved Ones?

ooh! Aah! Now we're talking (and aplogies for leaping off topic). Normie
Rowe's still around, apparently, albeit in a sad, musical theatre style.
IIRC, he's in a touring production of "Miss Saigon." I swear I'm not making
this up. A sad end for a man who recorded some cool stuff. The Loved
Ones...whappened? They seemed to vanish off the face of the earth after a
string of great singles. 'The Loved One' is pure snot.

Apropos of nothing...
is there a finer Syd Barrett-alike moment than the (equally Australian)
Masters Apprentices' 'Elevator Driver'?

Shaun - wonderful to hear someone else rant about this stuff. It's not
off-topic, because so much of that Aussie stuff was so wonderful because of
brilliant & cheesy production touches that sound loosely Meek to me.

I have the "Blueberry Hill" live album from '87 that The Loved Ones did.
Listened to it only once but now I'll have to listen again. It has a nice
"The Loved One" & "Everloving Man" on it, I recall.

Yes - "Elevator Driver" is big and wonderful.

Comments on Normie Rowe next time.

Re: Electroscope.... I heard their album was a tribute to Joe Meek....
well... there's a lot of ambient clarinet playing and strange drawn out
chord organ.... Kinda nice,... but not really a meek tribute per se....
The one song "Joe Heard A New World" is definitely about 304
and Joe's paranoid adventures.... In the packaging there is a picture of
Joe and Terry O'Neill (listed as Joe's assistant - anyone got any
info. on this guy and Patrick Pink's input in the studio.... also where
does Ted Fletcher fit in).... .... Anyway... they give the photo
credit and say that everyone should write to the JMAS to 'hear a new
world too.' Pretty nifty.

The packaging to the album says recorded in Scotland as well as "all
compositions by Gayle Harrison and John Cavanaugh".... I've only ever
seen this and a couple of other singles and comp. appearances most
of which are now unfortunately out-of-print on the defunct Wurlitzer
Jukebox label....

That's all I know basically... Cool album, cool band, great song....

Hello Doug and everyone in Meekville,

I finally got to listen to the Complete Tornados rerelease in depth
and it is quite a package.... "ragunboneman" and "stingray" are two
faves that have escaped me until now.... Amazing stuff.

Thanks Doug for the RealPlayer page... it continues to be a vital
stop on the internet. After listening to Joe Meek's Girls nonstop,
I wonder.... did Gunilla Thorn or Flip & the Dateliners do other
stuff with Meek?.... This stuff is also pretty amazing!! The Sutch
posts to the RealPLayer page continue to be unstoppable. It's amazing
his stuff hasn't been compiled recently (the same goes for the
Honeycombs)....
Are any of the RGM artists refusing to let their stuff be repressed?
It seems fishy that their hasn't been much Goddard or Sutch formally
released when their seems to be ample enough material to do a comp.
of some sort.

More Tom Jones. It's really interesting to hear his big voice booming out of
Meek's vintage, but small arrangements.

Also...Maybe it's not possible for you to post it, but a guitarist named
Jerry Swallow, an artist for Deadeye Records (on-the-web), has recorded a
killer version of "Telstar".

It's Dick Dale meets the Byrds.

Hi Doug,

Some more composition sessions at 304 would be nice. Also, maybe some
more Ricky Wayne in the vein of Hot Chicka Roo? Did Joe do any more work
with clarinetist Diana Dee than Cry My Heart? Some more Gunilla Thorne
than appears on 'Let's Go' would also be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Hamish

Yes - more Ricky Wayne in any vein.

Are there any Tony Dangerfield demo's - or just more that's not easy to
find?

Or Alan Dean & Problems, especially in the Lou Christie mode of "Thunder &
Rain".

Any more pathological songs like Jess Conrad's "Hurt Me"?

Has every RGM Gene Pitney (any demo's?) appeared here?

What about Carter-Lewis & The Southerners - whether or not these were
technically RGM productions - doing more Geoff Goddard-penned tunes?

Any funny & great - and maybe extended - Lee Sutton things besides what's on
"Work In Progress"?

Thanks.
M.

Found this on Bigmouth..Meekish interest towards the bottom...

Top 1000 albums of all time

Polls on the 'Top albums of all time', are usually received with much
scepticism and derision, partly because of the limited number of, and/or,
the narrow 'bandwidth' of the voters. However, Virgin are to publish the
'All Time Top 1,000 Albums', voting for which has been culled, over the last
3 years, from 200,000 voters. Unsurprisingly, The Beatles have taken 4 of
the top 5 slots, with 'Revolver', 'Sgt.Pepper', 'The White Album', and
'Abbey Road', whilst, Nirvana's 'Nevermind' completes the quintet at No.4.
The top ten also includes 'Morning Glory' by Oasis and R.E.M.'s 'Automatic
For The People'. The publication also includes a 'Top Artists' poll, again
headed by The Fab Four, followed by Dylan and Pink Floyd.

Top 10 Albums of all time

1. Revolver - The Beatles
2. Sgt Pepper - The Beatles
3. The White Album - The Beatles
4. Nevermind - Nirvana
5. Abbey Road - The Beatles
6. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
7. Automatic for the People - R.E.M
8. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
9. What's the Story Morning Glory? - Oasis
10. The Bends - Radiohead

Top 10 Artists

1. The Beatles
2. Bob Dylan
3. Pink Floyd
4. Oasis
5. David Bowie
6. R.E.M
7. U2
8. Radiohead
9. Rolling Stones
10. Nirvana

Top 5 Most Overrated Albums

1. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
2. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
3. Hotel California - Eagles
4. Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf
5. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel

Top 5 Worst Albums

1. Lord Sutch and his Heavy Friends - Screaming Lord Sutch
2. Metal Machine Music - Lou Reed
3. Having Fun With Elvis On Stage - Elvis Presley
4. The Transformed Man - William Shatner
5. Initiation - Todd Rundgren

I caught Lord Sutch on CBC's "As It Happens" yesterday, whining about the
list. Not that he was on there....he was just horrified that Elvis would be
included on the list. I guess he didn't know *which* EP album made the list!

Thank you very much, m'am. Have a scarf.

Greetings: I have updated the Telstar Web Real Player Page. All but two
tracks (Gerry Marsden and Ricky Wayne) have been loaded, and those will be
finished tonight.

Here's a rundown on the selections:

There are 5 songs written by Geoff Goddard that were recorded by non-RGM
artists. Among these are "My Baby's Just Crazy 'Bout Elvis" by Billy Boyle,
who was a British children's television star. Billy Fury recorded Geoff's
song, "Chapel On The Hill". The other Meek connection is that The Tornados
were Billy Fury's backing band for awhile. Cliff Richard's "My Head Goes
Around & Around" from 1970 is probably one of the last/most recent songs
written by Geoff Goddard. One of my personal favorites is "The Fountain Of
Love" by Mike Sarne. This was the B-side of the UK #1 hit, "Come Outside".
Mike recorded an early RGM version of "Just Like Eddie", but it wasn't
released. Mike also was in the film "Seaside Swingers" along with John
Leyton.

There are two excerpts from a 1995 radio interview with Dave Adams. In one
excerpt he talks about working with Gene Vincent and touring in general. In
the other he talks about Joe Meek's dealings with (future Beatles' producer)
George Martin.

I have included Glenda Collins' singing "If You've Got To Pick A Baby" at the
"Book Launch" in 1989. I won't say any more than that.

Petula Clark's "Dear Daddy" dates from 1959. There is some question as to
whether Joe is actually the engineer on this, but he did work with her during
the late 1950's. In another Meek-link, the producer and writer of her biggest
hit, "Downtown" was Tony Hatch, who played on several Meek sessions.

"Diggin' My Potatoes" by Heinz & The Wild Boys features future Led Zeppelin
guitarist Jimmy Page instead of the usual Ritchie Blackmore.

There are two versions of Tom Jones' "Chills & Fever". One is the original
RGM version. The other is the remake for Decca Records in 1964. The reason
for the 1965 copyright on the RGM version is that Joe leased the original
1963/4 recording only after Tom became famous with "It's Not Unusual".

Gerry Marsden & The Tornados recorded a demo of "Strollin'" in 1962. Yes,
it's the same Gerry Marsden of the Pacemakers. One wonders if another famous
Liverpool group recorded anything for Joe.

The Millionaires: Wishing Well (Stereo Master). As mentioned a while back,
Joe's finished masters were usually recorded as a 2 track stereo master, which
was then mixed down to mono for release as a single. Compare this with the
official release.

The Tornados' rendition of "Ready Teddy" qualifies as one of the low-lights of
Joe's career.

Speaking of low-lights, Toby Ventura's "If My Heart Were A Storybook" is a
candidate for all-time worst RGM single. Decca released this just after the
peak of Telstarmania, so maybe Decca thought Joe could do no wrong.

Dave Watts: Do You Come Here Often? This is a live version from one of the
JMAS shows in 1992. Dave was the Tornados keyboard player who played on the
original version. After playing it once, Dave is joined by Joe Meek
biographer John Repsch, who plays Rent Boy #1 in this tasteless rendition.
Rent Boy #2 is alleged to be the manager of one variety of Tornados groups
still performing.

Feel free to discuss these tracks on the list and please request anything
within reason.

Doug -

Another great playlist. Thanks for including my requests. We'll write you
when we've listened. Got any more by the Dowlands? I wish this stuff were
archived - only found the site weeks ago. It's interesting - Tony Hatch was
such an Anthony Newley butt-boy. I'd always assumed that he'd honed his
chops in the lap of Mr. Music Hall/Broadway. Hadn't known of the Meek
connection. As the cigar said to Monica, there's a place for everything - or
to quote the great Groucho Marx, "I like my cigar, but I take it out every
now and then."

Keep including the "worst" stuff on the Real Player site. I love that side
of Joe Meek: the Bobby Rydellesque, Cheese-Itz side is not always
appreciated. When the Hound of WFMU did his Meek tribute a few years back,
he focused on the great instrumentals and completely neglected that
Leytonesque groove-thang.
When I phoned Jim Marshall/The Hound at WFMU's then East Orange studios to
chastise him for only playing the more critically acclaimed RGM recordings
like some chickenshit mainstream disc jockey, he whined that his "biker
audience in NYC just couldn't handle the other stuff". On the other hand- at
the very least, Marshall with help assembling the tribute show by the ever
wonderful Miriam Linna, IL Brooche, & Brylcreem-freakazoid &
neo-noir-rockabilly hackster Billy Miller (and eventual author of the
anti-Hal David/Burt Bacharach anthem, "The Man Who Shot The Man Who Wrote
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance") brought awareness of Joe's greatness to
greater Teaneck, New Jersey and parts north- spreading and sharing the flame
and the glory of the genius of 304 Holloway Road.
M.&S.

Oh- and while totally off topic with the sexual asides, please allow me to
mention a rather morbid story Cassandra Peterson (better known to U.S. tv
viewers as the USA CABLE NETWORK's Elvira, once-upon-a-time hostess of
el-cheapo horror films on weekends) related to Howard Stern. Her first
sexual encounter was with Tom Jones. She was a 17 year old runaway who had
become a topless dancer in Las Vegas. Somehow she maintained her
maidenhood, only to have it ripped beyond repair by the overly endowed Mr.
Jones (allegedly 12 inches plus) when they engaged in a night of passion.
She was still pretty angry about the incident, claiming she had to be taken
to an emergency ward of a hospital for stitches and never received so much
as a drunken dedication in song in honor of her selfless devotion from the
caddish, if well hung, brickyard boy himself.

I have a copy of all 8 Dowlands singles, plus one demo. If anyone is lucky
enough to have the "Lucky Johnny" single, it's worth £300 in mint condition.
Unfortunately, I own absolutely no Meek recordings on vinyl. Diamond
Recordings are rumored to be releasing a Dowlands CD later this year which
will include an unreleased Meek-produced LP.

Can someone on the list give me the directions to 304 Holloway Road. I
plan to go to London next month, and I want to pay my respects to Joe.
Also where is the park where Joe Orton and Joe Meek used to go to.

... and one more question, is the flat now occupied by tenents or is it
still connected to Meek in some matter?

thanks!

Take the tube up to Holloway Road. As you come out of the station, turn
left. Cross over the road as soon as you can, and carry on in the same
direction. After about five minutes you'll see a bicycle store. The front
door to 304 is next to that. There's a plaque on the place (at a stoopid
height) just to let you know that the Lad Himself lived and worked there.

>Also where is the park where Joe Orton and Joe Meek used to go to.
Further down the road, t'other way (I think a new net denizen might be able
to give you better directions...ullo Kim???). IIRC, it's near the library
where Joe O. nicked the books that landed him inside.

Nah, it's a private residence. The JMAS sometimes get access to the place
for walkabouts, though. I don't think there's anything coming up along those
lines.

Have a good time (he said, going green and getting homesick).

Greetings: I have been asked by someone if anyone out there has the complete
version of the 1966 Joe Meek track "Message To Dave & Dee". The most common
version runs 3:00 and was copied from the original acetate owned by Sandra
Meek (Joe's niece). They are looking for the full version that would have
been copied from the master tape and runs longer (how much longer I don't
know).

There is a reward for anyone who comes up with the real thing.

Thanks.

For those who have access to it, today's (Tuesday September 15th) Life section
of USA Today has a long article on British horror director James Whale and the
new "Ed Wood"-ish biopic "Gods And Monsters". I had never heard of James
Whale before, but after reading the article, I couldn't help but draw
parallels to the life of Joe Meek. If you read the article, you'll know what
I mean.

The James Whale bio is pretty good. He was the filmmaker behind
Frankenstein (Karloff version) among others. I wouldn't exactly put him in
the same shoes as Wood. Whale was a very much talented filmmaker in the
classic Hollywood sense. And this is no disrespect to Wood - I love him.

Doug:
We spent most of this evening downloading onto tape the latest offerings but
there is one segment that we could never download completely --the 15 minute
Geoff Goddard medley. After twelve tries, we were able to download
approximately 6minutes 54seconds -just past "Mr Lovebug" the server would
time out on us. This happened almost every pass we made and finally I had to
give it up and download most of the rest of the terrific offerings -or, at
least the ones we don't already own cd versions of.
Any suggestions you can give us on how to get the complete 15 minutes of the
Goddard medley? What we did get was just beautiful... and the opening
introduction to the gathered fans of Goddard was just hilariously
wonderful!
"Oh! He's been waiting, already!"
I hate to keep saying the same thing each time I post, but I'm duty bound to
thank you for providing the terrfic selections on the Telstar Web Real
Player Page.

---> Here's a helpful hint if you have Windows 95 or higher:

1). Paste the url of the track you want into your browser (Internet Explorer
or Netscape):
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/4326/Piano_Medley.rm

2). Press Enter

3). The file will download into your computer's memory cache. Wait until the
file has finished downloading.

4). Using Windows Explorer, Select: Tools/Find/Files or Folders.

5). Under the "Name & Location" tab, search for files named "*.rm".
For the directory to "Look In", select the drive letter that contains
your operating system (usually "c").

6). Under the "Date Modified" tab, select "during the previous 1 day(s)".

7). Click on "Find Now"

8). Iin the example using "Piano_Medley.rm", that file will pop up during the
search as (most likely) c:\windows\temporary\Piano_Medley.rm.

9). Right click on that file and select "copy".

10). Go back to Windows Explorer and find a permanent folder to place the
file into.

11). Right click and select "paste".

This trick works for most types of files that you normally aren't allowed to
"record" or "copy", such as Real Player Files, Wav files, etc.

Doug- thank you for your advice. We followed your instructions and got the
entire Goddard "Piano Medley".
So far, we've only downloaded about half of the selections.
Hey- the "tasteless" version of "Do You Come Here Often" by an apparently
drunken Dave Watts w/Tornados is a favorite around here.
"Tasteless"? Beyond a doubt.
  Hilarious? You bet!

I'm a composer. And I've had other musicians stop by the Telstar.web page
specifically to listen to the "Do You Come Here Often" piece.

It's a fantastic instrumental. It would have made great a great 60's era
theme for those light romantic comedy movies they used to make with Doris
Day, et al. Or it would have been a great TV theme song.

BTW, the gay banter at the end, doesn't add or detract much from the song.
I'm not gay, I just think it's a fantastic, underappreciated instrumental.

Ciao

---> FYI: Dave Watts only plays the organ on that track. Rent Boy #1 is
played by Joe Meek biographer John Repsch. Rent Boy #2 is played by ????
(help me out here, Shaun.)

It's a guy called Hinton Sheryn. If memory serves, he was involved in
managing (?) one of the first of the "new" Tornados outfits on the nostalgia
circuit. If that's true, he's probably awaiting trial in Holland for crimes
against humanity.
