Dear Luc,
Nice to hear you enjoyed your vacation in Turkey! I'm spending most
of mine traveling around beautiful Heidelberg... where I'm currently
living.
Concerning Mathilde and Sappho: Mathilde is Op. 100 composed for the
Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Saxon-Weimar. Sappho is Op.68,
composed earlier than Mathilde. Both are ballets, and yes, Hummel
seemed to have "borrowed" from himself. In the Benjovski book of
Hummel's Oeuvre Lists, the two pieces show up, with similar, but
slightly different notes (for the two ouvertures). I would guess
that Hummel took the same score and made some minor changes for
Mathilde. But more detailed, I do not know. But the new disk is
great!
Enjoy the beautiful weather of spring!
Best wishes,
Marianne
