Dear Mr. Christians, Thank you very much for the early tip! That's
wonderful that you are organizing a Hummel/Beethoven festival. What a
great idea!

I've marked my calendar.

Thank you again.

That's absolutely wonderful! I heard the overture of Mathilde de
Guise in Jena with the Hummel Society several years back when the CD
came out. It's such an exciting piece of music and the musicians had
such fun playing it! I'll definitely try to attend the opera this
winter. I guess it will be the first Hummel Opera performed since the
19th Century! How exciting! :)

Thank you for the tip.

Liza -- This is a bit of a delayed response, but I had a look at the
1971 thematic catalogue by Dieter Zimmerschied. My German isn't
great, but there is no listing for an autograph, so I would assume it
is lost.

The Joel Sachs editions for Garland are probably as close as you will
get to an early edition, short of hunting down actual copies of 19th
c. editions. I don't know which edition Sachs reproduces, though

The most relevant editions seem to be the first edition, published by
Steiner in Vienna, 1819. Schlesinger in Paris brought out an edition
in 1825 as part of their "Oeuvres completes" of Hummel, and Haslinger
published an edition in Vienna the year after.

This probably doesn't help much, sorry.

The Romantics reinterpreted Hummel just as they did
all other composers. Perhaps there are other first
editions, but certainly Sachs' will be one of the
definitetive ones.

I'm afraid I'm ignorant of the Hummel-Beriot connection, but I find it
unlikely that Beriot heard Hummel play all of those works that appear
in his edition. If Hummel's "Anweisung" is to be taken at face value,
there is simply no way that he used as much pedal as Beriot indicates,
and I do wonder why Beriot, a violinist, was editing piano music.

Oh well...!

Hi Andrew,

sorry, I haven't checked my yahoo e-mail for a while. Thank you very much for your reply! I will check out RISM, why haven't I thought of it earlier.... It is an interesting subject. For example, I was wondering, since according to Mark Kroll, Beriot and Hummel knew each other, whether the French edition is Beriot's account of how Hummel played it... Why otherwise would he come up with those metric divisions of the free figurations in the slow movement... Also, those different notes in the Musica Rara edition, I wonder whether Truscott consulted some alternative historical London edition. There are other examples where composers revised the works for subsequent printing in Britain.
We'll see, if I find out anything of interest, I'll share :-)
In the meanwhile, thanks again for getting back to me!

As to the Sachs edition, I presume later editions referred to it, but
I'm not sure. Yes, the Universal is a reprint of the Berio edition,
and I'm almost positive Hummel had nothing to do with the edition.

I myself have an old Kalmus edition that appears to be a reprint of
the old Breitkopf & Hartel, as well as Harold Truscott's edition for
Musica Rara in the mid-70s. The latter has some chromatic alterations
in the slow movement that are not in the B&H, but apart from that,
they are very similar.

Hi!

I'm new to this group, so I'm not sure if a similar question has been
asked already, sorry...

I'm looking for sources to come as close as possible to an authentic
text of Hummel's magnificent piano sonata in F-sharp minor op. 81.

The thematic catalogue doesn't list a manuscript. Is it lost? Any
story behind that?

There is a quasi-facsimile reprint of the first edition done by Joel
Sachs. Is this the only source that later editions referred to? The
Dover, for example, is a reprint of a Charles Berio edition (same as

Did Hummel have anything to do with any of these alterations?

I'd be immensely grateful for any hints!!!

Great to see that such a group exists.

Good evening.

I found a nice chamber music cd on the internet.
A great ensemble from Salzburg plays the Johan Wendt arrangement for W A Mozart's Zauberfloete.
As well as the J N Hummel Arrangement for pf, fl, vn & vc  of Mozarts Symphonie Nr 41 KV 551.

Excellent recording .   Their site : Ensemble Salzburg  .

The cd ... just mail them ... and they send it to you  : 15 euro + postage.
Well worth it !  Nice ensemble .

Thumbs up !
