Hi Michael,
is Rahsaan mentioned in that book?

A 48 minute A Love Supreme recorded at Antibes is on the A Love
Supreme: Delux Edition (disc 2).

That's great Henry -thanks!

Interesting to note the John Coltrane performed in the UK in November
1961, the year that I was born,
Excited to see that he performed at Brighton Dome Theatre on 16th
November 1961. I work in Brighton and live in Hove, about three miles
away from Brighton Dome Theatre.

All good wishes

Michael

Greetings- apologise for cross posting as have raised this on another
forum.
Did John Coltrane ever perform in the UK ? Also curious to know how
John Coltrane's work was received in UK during his lifetime,
particularly the later albums? Any feedback, suggestions on
books/sites to look at, gratefully received.

Greetings, recently picked up this book -with CD- by Norwegian
journalist Randi Hultin, who interviewed -and also offered hospitality
to a number of famous Jazz musicians visiting Sandanavia in the 1960's
onwards. There is a fascinating chapter on John Coltrane, amongst
other luminaries.Randi Hultin also visited Paris in 1965, to meet John
Coltrane and to see him perform live. Apparently he performed a forty-
eight minute version of 'A Love Supreme'.
Have only dipped into this book so far but it looks like a fascinating
read.

Thank you for the feedback David. Hope that this album will be re-
released.
Though a huge admirer of Alice Coltrane, I wasn't sure it was
necessarily a good idea to have over-dubbed strings on to a post-humous
release, but will want to hear the final result before commenting
further.
And if anyone happens to know if Alice Coltrane's last album 'Sacred
Language of Asencion' is going to be released- please post!
Regards

I think it's a great album, right in line with her Impulse albums. Too
bad it isn't in print outside of Japan.

I would too, as it's somewhat rare--one of the few Coltrane recordings I haven't
heard.

Hello Patrick,

You were lucky a teacher who was prepared to turn you on to
John Coltrane, and Miles.
I also rate Billy Cobham's album 'Spectrum' very highly. There is
some interesting information on Billy Cobham in the book 'Power,
Passion and Beauty-The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra',
The greatest band that ever was', by Walter Kolosky, Abstract Logix
Books.
Now I've listened to a fair amount of John Coltrane, I am not sure
how I'd still rate Carlos Santana's and Johm McLaughlin's versions of
'Love Supreme' and 'Naima' (from 'Love Devotion and Surrender') but I
am grateful that checking out this album again has opened a door to
some remarkable music.

With best wishes

I had heard Billy Cobham Spectrum as my first "jazz fusion" album in
1973. I had been a King Crimson fan before that. I learned about
John Coltrane from my high school music teacher that same year. Our
school, Booker T. Washington in Tulsa, Oklahoma was the first
voluntarily-integrated "magnet" school in the nation. The curriculum
was very progressive and the music teacher taught classes in
composition, arranging, electronic music, etc. When he put Africa on
the turntable, we were all blown away. I along with countless others
who were influenced by our teacher became forever fans of Coltrane,
Miles Davis, and others. As far as I know he still teaches there
influencing young hearts and minds. What a great teacher!

Greetings, have tried to reformat my previous reviews which appear in
Group files as 'Alice Coltrane 1' as earlier effort was hard to read.
Have posted two more Alice Coltrane CD reviews as 'Alice Coltrane 2'
on aforementioned Group File. 'Eternity' (1976) and 'Illuminations'
with Carlos Santana from 1974.

Looks like a great book, with plenty of original research
hope it also gets published outside
of North America .

Would like to hear from list members, which are the best
books on John Coltrane, and are there are any which should
be avoided?

Hey Saga

Thanks for the post and for directing me to the messages; they were
intriguing to read.
Yes, I particularly enjoyed Lorenzo Pace's account of meeting John
Coltrane and the related thread ; messages 830 - 833 .

Going back to the original thread, there seems to be a strong argument
to suggest that John Coltrane ( and other contemporary Jazz artists)
influenced British late 1960's/early 1970's progressive rock such as
Yes, Caravan, Soft Machine, Henry Cow.
It seemed that Modern Jazz was not afraid to make longer pieces of
music, and to showcase different musicians performing solos, and that
this trend crossed over into rock music.

Is it alright to place reviews that I've attempted to write of Alice
Coltrane's albums in this group's files.

With best wishes to you all

Michael

Hey, Mike -

(Hi, all -- smiling)

I went through the past messages and I thought you might want to read
this response from one of our coolest members on the board who
actually met Trane.

Lorenzo Pace talks about his experience in a message he wrote in
response to a question posed on Tue Feb 17, 2004 (put that date in
the search for the messages).

I feel you'll find his story very moving. I know I did.

You also might want to read on these dates too;

Sun Aug 8, 2004 1:28 pm
Feb 20, 2004 2:09 pm

My personal experience also reaches back to when I was a child. My
Dad listened to Trane, Miles, Dizzy, Porter, Monk, Bird, et al,
regularly so it was common in my home.

However, I really didn't become serious about Trane until I was in
Grad school on a serious melt down and couldn't produce the last bit
of my dissertation.

I popped on some Trane, got my head on straight, and the rest
is "herstory" *smiling*

~One Love~

Saga .... Ridin' The Blue Trane.

Thanks for responses. Following hearing John McLaughlin/Carlos
Santana 'Love Devotion Surrender' (1973) again many years later, the
first
John Coltrane album I bought was 'A Love Supreme' ( not
surprisingly).
As far as I can tell Carlos Santana tried hard in the years 1970-
1974 to encourage rock fans to listen to Jazz, especially John
Coltrane, Alice Coltrane and Miles Davis. Santana also made an album
with Alice Coltrane in 1974 'Illuminations'.
John McLaughlin was already known in both Rock and Jazz circles.
With best wishes

My first exposure to jazz was through my father, as he played lots of Donald
Byrd, Herbie Hancock, and some Grover Washington. My first exposure to Coltrane
was while I was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, and while
in the ships store stumbled on the Giants Steps CD. I was hooked for life!!

That's a good question! To be honest, I don't remember very well how I first
heard about Coltrane. My parents are not jazz enthusiasts (my mother likes
jazz, specially Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan). I'm still
young (32) and my friends don't listen to jazz. I'm from Rio de Janeiro
(Brazil) and, although we have a strong music culture, jazz is not very
famous here.

I always liked instrumental music (sax, trumpet, piano, etc). Maybe that's
how I came to know Coltrane, I'm not sure. I also remember hearing about him
in a movie (I think it was Mr. Holland's Opus, does anyone remember that?).

Anyway, what I can say is that the first time I heard My Favorite Things, I
couldn't stop listening to it!!

That’s a good question! To be honest, I don’t remember very well how I first
heard about Coltrane. My parents are not jazz enthusiasts (my mother likes

I always liked instrumental music (sax, trumpet, piano, etc). Maybe that’s
how I came to know Coltrane, I’m not sure. I also remember hearing about him
in a movie (I think it was Mr. Holland’s Opus, does anyone remember that?).

Anyway, what I can say is that the first time I heard My Favorite Things, I
couldn’t stop listening to it!!

Anyone else come here from listening to rock music, particularly
McLaughlin and Santana?
Regards, Michael

Hi Lorenzo

Very interested to read that you were there. What do you reckon to
the CD? From what I can gather the tracks that were recorded from the
first concert of the evening.
Would be pleased to read more of your recollections of the night.
Regards
Michael

Hi,

Found this CD on Amazon.UK: It was released on Impulse, catalogue
number 31458 91202.

The studio albums this release reminds me of are 'Ascension' and
'Interstellar Space'.

Your favorite jazz store should have it or be able to get it without
problem, but if not, Amazon has it either as a cd or a download.
