he was born Febuary 26,1932 in Kingland Arkansas, one of seven kids. His dad Ray Cash (1897-1985) married his mom Carrie Rivers (1904-1991).His brother Jack ( 2 years older than he was) was seriously injured by a circular saw accident in 1944 and died from injury and infection a week later-an event that was hard on Johnny. Johnny's full given name at birth was J R Cash. He wrote the name Johnny on his army application ( which required a name rather than initials) and became the name he was lovingly called by his family, friends and fans. He overcame drug and smoking addictions in his life. In 1998 he was ill with pneumonia but pulled through. His popularity struggled in the early 1980's. Later he worked with 26 year old producer Paul Ruben and enjoyed new-found popularity with fans. His 2nd wife June had a heart valve replaced. She appeared to be doing well but without warning suffered a massive heart attack 48 hours later. Johnny made the agonizing decision to remove life support. Johnny wasn't the same without his soul mate June, himself dying 4 months later on September 12,2003- a very sad day for country music. he is buried in his hometown Nashville Tennessee.
