hey jurgen, i was wondering if you could implement a swing feature in the 999 so that you could apply different percents of swing to each track,  like have the high hat at 60% and the kick at 10%, the snare at 30%  etc etc.  if this could be possible i think it would be really neat trick.  i love the timing on the 999 but flexibility is always welcome.

hi List,

the headphone socket on my AirBase is noisey but only in the sense that it crackles when i change the volume.  i don't get a constant hiss or anything like that.  one strange thing tho is that if i change the midi receive channel it only takes effect if i turn the unit off and power up again.

I would like to upgrade the firmware of my XBase999, but there are
only Jomox tools available for use on Windows/OSX systems.

can i update the AirBase99 using this technique?  the previous owner has butchered the screw holes so i'd have to hack saw the lid off to put new ROMs inside!  i pretty sure i'm out of luck here though.

thanks,

Haha, now we know why poor M is under the weather. These last few
requests have been over the top, if not completely understandable at
least, IMO. Some firmware can be flashed. Some cannot. Some can, but
only with special tools/interface. unless the ab99's ROM has already
been designed to be flashed as described, there's little chance of
that happening. Sorry to say...

hi Shagghie,

actually i was getting momentarily confused with the ability to 'burn' your own EPROMs with an OS image file.  that will still involve the hack saw though.  it never ceases to amaze me what people are prepared to put audio equipment through.

:-))

yes, thanks for this exhausting description. The AirBase99 has been designed
in 1998, and unfortunately the firmware is EPROM based and cannot be
flashed. I thought this was common sense, but I'm damned to repeat my
mantras in the cyberspace every year, too;)

Rom updates can be burnt yourself...the hex files are in the download area
of the jomox website.

2x 27C512 (-120 minimum speed) or 2x 27C256 are required
hex file has to be split up it even/odd bytes to obtain Hi byte/Low byte
chips. Installation instructions are on the website in the manuals section,
too.
Every better electronics store has a burn service or there is certainly
someone on the list who has a programmer:)

The AirBase99 latest firmware is 1.15 since 2001, I think. It will NOT be
supported any more. Since 2005 AirBase99 is NOT produced any more.
If someone wants to have editable start points in the sample section, burn
the JaZBase03 firmware 1.01 which is the newest version from 2003, hardware
is 100% compatible to AB99. Only the start screen display says
"JaZbase....", the rest is identical.

or just contact our repair department:

www.xtended.de

Jomox does NOT sell EPROM updates any more, again for everyone and for the
new year.

The same yields for XBase09, XBase09 SE and TokTok / Dr. Walker editions!!

only SunSyn, Resonator Neuronium and XBASE 999 have flash based firmware:))

I forgot to say,

Happy 2007 !

Best Wishes,

P.S. if the screws are butchered, lift them with a tool (tweezer, pliers)
and screw them on or drill them out. Not hack saw the lid, such a nonsense.

Hello all,

As the former US Distributor for the great JoMoX products, I may still have some AiRBass99 EPROM kits available.  Contact me directly at johnnyvn@....  I'll have to double check stock, but I do believe that I may have at least a couple left.

Thanks much!

Several folks have lamented about not having rack ears on the 999 to
be able to integrate the 999 in their studios. I am one of them,
however, I also know that Juergen just put on a marathon performance
for us all this Christmas.

So, what I'd like to do, is ask that all 999 owners reply with how
important rack ears are to their studio setup/workflow. A simple
reply with the number being 1-10, with 10 highest, will suffice.

Additionally, I would personally like to recommend/request that the
ears be designed exactly like the SunSyn's ingenious and appreciated
design...with one small exception, that when racked, the 999's wooden
end pieces stay in-tact...meaning that the ears simply fasten to the
outsides of the wood panels...to preserve the look, and to save me
from loosing the ears....

my offical vote, then:

Future Retro Revolution

I have this dam itch to buy them both after getting some extra $$

I'm drum crazy and easy real time control and the Revolution because
I really like the 303 sound and dig the built in step sequencer. It

I have the DRM1 MKII and I absolutely love it. It's completely it's own animal, and I don't feel that it overlaps my Xbase09 too much. With it's FM capabilities, the Vermona can create some out-there sounds. It's one of my favorite machines. Here's a demo track I recorded a while ago that features some of the traditional and non-traditional sounds you can get out of it: http://roblogic.net/sounds/view/15

I can't speak to the Revolution, but I have a 777 and wouldn't give it up. FR makes high quality gear and they stand behind it.

i have both of the units and i reccomend them both,  i also have a 999 and sunsyn and there is no overlap between the different units at all.  the sequencer on the revo is awesome and very intuitive.   the vermonas plethora of controls is awesome,  but just remember you can only midi note on/off  there is no feature to save patches.

An update, I have successfully updated my XB999 using a midi interface
functioning with an Ubuntu computer OS. To do so I borrowed a wintel
computer and captured packets of data sent by the Jomox dumper
software utility. Then I added the 6 bytes (00 00 00 00 00 F7) to the
resulting file. This works to update the XB999 flash firmware when
sent with the amidi sysex utility (part of the ALSA tools packaged
with Ubuntu). I used the same utility to capture data coming from the
wintel machine running Jomox dumper software utility.

This flash method works reliably for me, now that I have the raw sysex
data. I wish this data were available from Jomox directly.

I will be looking at how to chunk appropriate SysEx files from the
official Jomox data, perhaps writing a small Ruby programming script.

My opinion: The Vermona Drum MkII is a very nice tool (I had it for
testing and I owned its archetype, the Tama TS-Series, for a long time).
But if you are not realy deep in percussion orientated sound, it might
be a little bit obsolete.

To my experience a sequenced effects module (something like a Roland EF
303) would add much more value to todays electronic music, than a second
drum module.

Hi,

I used a FR Revolution with my XBase09. Clearly if you want a real TB303
like, this is a really good choice. The sequencer is so easy to use, it
sounds really good!
Future Retro made a good job on it. If you want to make old school acid
sounds with a good sequencer XBase+Revo is for you.

;-)

Best regards, breed

Yes, Ruby is the way to get actual work done. I wonder still, what
information that the Jomox Dumper sends before a dump, and after it?

48-byte Prefix (sent when you initiate program to start dump, but
before confirmation OK the message that the device is ready):

0000000 2490 9100 0024 2492 9300 0024 2494 9500
0000010 0024 2496 9700 0024 2498 9900 0024 249a
0000020 9b00 0024 249c 9d00 0024 249e 9f00 0024

48-byte Suffix (sent after you confirm OK the message that the dump
has completed successfully)

0000000 40b0 b100 0040 40b2 b300 0040 40b4 b500
0000010 0040 40b6 b700 0040 40b8 b900 0040 40ba
0000020 bb00 0040 40bc bd00 0040 40be bf00 0040

Are these sequences required to safely flash upgrade my device?

hey list!

I've been toying around with the idea of getting a 999. However there
are no samples of it online except the ones on the jomox website. Do
you guys know of any other samples? or even better would it be too much
to post some of your 999 patterns online? This would give a better idea
of what can be done with it, since different ppl tend to take different
stuff out of gear.

it'd be great!

Hi Rui ol' pal, shagghie here.
I have three words for you:

Get the 999

OK, well, two words and one number.

This thing sounds incredible...no I mean it, incredible...

Surely if I post a demo I'll let you know, but nothing in the pipeline.

If you want to see how I'm using mine in the setup, etc., this short
clip should suffice:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQlME1ot5kQ

get one already...

Hi, you can check a simple but long 999 demo I made with all the prests
at www.platinumrecruiting.com 14MB MP3 download. It will give an idea
of some of the base sounds and such.

It's a great machine. If you want to save a few $$ get the Xbase 09 or
if you have a sequencer, get the Airbase. But the ultimate luxury drum
macmachine is the 999. It's the answer to the question...
"What is the most wicked drum machine?"

I'm thinking about getting a Vermona too because I'm crazy.

Sequence the Vermona with the 999 maybe???

me too... I can say that I am really enjoying the 999 next to the Dr.
Walker, too.
So many voices, so much bass, so much fun, and endless combinations,
with the same workflow still there.

Hey, very cool setup Shagghie.  What I have asked for in the past is some demo’s to show the sample import.  Ideally along the lines of: her is the original 16bit sample outside of the 999 and her it is imported down to 8bits along with a demo of it sequenced.

How come you have the Dr Walker also?  Surely there must be a truck load of overlay?

I am very close to getting a 999 as kinda have the money now but moving house and jobs so just waiting for a little stability before I feel comfortable spending the money.  The three things on my list so far are: the 999, new monitors, the PEK (I have the MED already but likely to keep this for 5 notes poly).

Ta for the clip post.  Do you always work in the dark? ;-)

Dr. Walker gives me 4 3 more parts to work with. I run all the
individual outs into a mixer, so I can 'jam the mixer' sliders, pan,
on-board mixer effects, inserts, etc. that way I can crunch a high
hat, compress a kick, delay a snare or sample, or what have you all in
one place, but with great power. This particular dr. walker has
patterns from the dr. himself. it's serial #1, and ledgend has it
this unit travelled with the Dr. along with several other jomox pieces
on a massive tour back in the day. the patterns alone on here are
priceless... Need to dump them to the 999 somehow, but haven't spent
the time to see if/how that might work.

yes, always in the dark.

Don't recommend the PEK with the MED... I tried a MED/MEK combo for
two voices and it was just not right at all. The PEK is the only DSI
poly combo, that, IMHO, really 'works right' and feels right.

I would also recommend a sunsyn wayyyyyyy before a PEK. But that's
me. Key the MED and call it a day.

Juergen is working on the sample upload as we speak. If I recall
correctly, the same 'method' of sample upload is true for both the 999
and SunSyn's OSes, so they will be done around the same time, sometime
in the weeks after NAMM, is my best guess. That does not come from any
official sources, either. There is only one official source, the rest
of us just try to save him time so he can, well, code the user wave
functionality!

:)

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.

I was not aware that the sample upload does not currently work.  This would account for no demos :)

Im just listening to the demo’s are www.platinumrecruiting.com but to be honest, these are nothing new to me; I used to own a xBase and now have a Airbase.

I have always been intrigued by the SunSys but I could never buy something that expensive on spec and I don’t believe there are any demo units in any London shops.  Still, it does look like a very cool synth.

yes,

probably a couple of weeks after NAMM there will be the upload tool.
The X999 can ALREADY receive the sample dumps since OS 1.00 ...it is the
only way to get the samples inside the machine on manufacturing.
But the preparation and segmentation and conversion of samples and banks is
absolutely user-incompatible, so we decided to provide this download tool
before we start to generate overall confusion....

This is done by another programmer, (not me), thus I have to be pushy to him
to get this done. He assured me that a rough beta version capable of the
minimum functionality will be ready in a few weeks, with luck before NAMM.
He's working on it since november.

Sorry, but the december date wasn't possible to keep.

Thanks for all the good words on my products:-)

Recently I was listening to the demos on the Jomox website again. I still
like them, but certainly we will have to provide more audio samples...the
X999 is for sure the most versatile and best sounding drum machine that I
have ever made...I'm most critical to my own creations, but this time I
think it is pretty well done:) Also it was meant to be the last complex
hybrid analog drum machine in the Jomox line of products and continue all
the xbase and airbase stuff.

For those who are visiting the NAMM show, Jomox will share a little stand on
the Analog Haven booth.
Other exhibitors may also carry and display our products.

Gotta go on, and eventually see you in California;)
