Well, I am finally the proud owner of an Xbase (from Bananas at Large)
as of Monday, and the sound of this thing is really chunky! I'm hoping
that this unit will really be a big help in kicking off my plans to
play out live.

Unfortunately, I have received a unit that is very buggy and unstable.
It is a brand new ver 2.09, and works normally for 5-15 minutes. Then,
it goes "pop! ssshhhhhh...." and silence, while the display generally
starts to spit out random values rapidly. Typically, this happens when
I'm in pattern write mode and the sequencer is running, but also
happens just in pattern playback. If I stop writing and change
patterns to playback, then I'll hear a slight static popping that
follows the drum pattern.

If I have to resort to taking the unit back, I'll be even more
disappointed than I already am, cause I have a feeling that it might be
awhile until Bananas gets more Xbases in. Any suggestions?

Hans (who actually turned Bananas at Large on to Jomox)

That sounds like an incorrect power supply perhaps--mine acted like that,
then I got a different power supply. But I can't remember which was bad and
which was good! Until someone else chimes in, I'll try to check tonight.

David.

This same thing happened to me. The Xbase would play fine for a about 30
minutes and then it would go complete haywire. It turned out to be a bad power
bar. Replaced it with a proper power bar, et voila. Total xbase heaven.

BTW, the extra sequencer tracks are pure heaven. Jomox should expand on it and
create a dedicated sequencer box. That would be cool... wait, I can't afford
any more gear... forget I said anything...

Jon...It's Freon from NY. anyway...will the newest OS for Xbase permit,
recording of all Hat instruments (HH

Subject: Update: The very latest in Airbase bugs...

Greetings all,

Well, I found another bug in the airbase last night. When you edit the
instruments via midi, the Airbase does not consider any of them changed as
far as the "save" function goes, essentially, this means that you cannot
practically edit kits and save their contents on the JoMoX.

How nice that I can edit a kit perfectly down to the levels and any attempt
at saving the changed parameters to the JoMoX is nullfied with a program
changes.

If I am doing anything wrong, do let me know. But as far as I know, this IS
a bug. An ugly discomforting bug. It is just a little frustrating to make
a suite of changes and to have no way of keeping them stored in the JoMoX.

Also, the volume knob on the front apparently controls the headphone volume
and does nothing to the mains.

Bizarre character kit names (like &%#%*#$ or thereabouts) show up after
scrolling through a certain number of kits. I think if you go backwards from
000, they show up.

The lack of the kit saving function recognizing instrument edits via midi is
the biggest problem I can think of. It means that I have to load all of the
parameters by hand through the Airbase itself, if I want any modified kits
saved to the unit.

Please help asap.

Thanks,

Aaron

Airbase, only an Xbase, but I remember the solution.

Edit from midi CC till your heart's content- then use the one edit "knob" on
the Jomox front panel and change the sound a tiny bit. Change it back if you
want. You can now save all of the changes you've made- even the ones you did
from midi.

Correct?

Good luck,

Shawn

Hey Shawn,

Went home last night and WHAM, The tricked worked! Thanks, you win the
coveted "Value monkey of the Day" award.
For the next week, if anyone asks you, "who da man," I hereby grant you
ability to respond with "Me."

Anyway, thanks again.

Note to JoMoX: editing the CC's should appear in the edit screens, just as
if you turned a knob. Would solve the saving problem as well, no? Anyway,
let's get all the bugs in the existing products ironed as soon we can. We
don't want to get reviews like Waldorf do we? ;)

And once again, to members of the list, for this week, Shawn is officially
da man on the list.

Aaron

I had a similar problem, the upgrade with the latest OS
(an "user instalable" eprom that you have to ask from
your distributor or contact jomox ) will fix that
problem...well, not cpmpletly, because the problem still
subsists in some snare sounds, at least whenever these
have a decay above a treshold I never cared to
investigate...but its not nice.
As it seems its just a problem of the "early units",
meaning not the new ones (more expensive with some
revised hardware), some trouble with analog components
/something related with tolerance margins for the
VCAs...not shure about the reason, but absolutly shure
about the "symptoms").
Anyway, with the latest OS this problem is minimized,
although we still have the program change problem :( .

Still the Airbase is a wonderful, wonderful machine...I
really love it...and all these kits...sometimes its just like
magic, doing the track in a specially suited kit but then
randomly change the kit and the results are radical and
magnificent (instant alternative mix...) and with a quality
that makes me want to thank these great Jomox guys
everyday ;)

My advice, seek help with Jomox, they are great people
and ready to help.

Best,

Paulo Abreu

i thought mine was one of the new units. i *just* got it back
from the US distributor.. i had sent it there to get fixed after
NAMM, by the inventor.. for long static sounds after the toms..
i had been told by jomox that they were quite certain it was the
fault of theresistors simply having tolerances too large, it's an
easy problem for a technician to fix etc... then, i am told by the
distributor that especially the toms should sound this way, and
i should get a noise gate, something like that. somewhere it
seems the story changed. i am in touch with jomox & have been.

i hear the short click after the crash, even with shorter decay times :(
sorry the sample is so large, but i recorded the noise after it, and maybe
a hald second of a lower noise level so you maybe see the difference
when it shuts off, which i admit may be slight. but my sampler is the
master of clarity (s5000) so... you tell me? any feedback is welcome..
if it's problems can be fixed, i would send it to germany right away...

a hald second of a lower noise level so you maybe see the difference
when it shuts off, which i admit may be slight. but my sampler is the
master of clarity (s5000) so... you tell me? any feedback is welcome..
if it's problems can be fixed, i would send it to germany right away...

that's possible. i did run it through my cheap little
behringer mixer, not straight into the sampler. also,
i can't hear it played through my soundcard either..
computer noise, cheap stupid soundcard's native
ground humming... hmm. you know what? i sent an email
to the list saying sorry if that got in everyone's inbox
or something to that effect, & i never got that..yet i got
two of the one with the sample attached.. ok then.
bye!

I don't know about you, but if this low-level hum is louder than the
pffffft-sound you were talking about, then I wouldn't care at all, I'd even
not put a gate on it... I mean, if something sits in the mix, then you won't
hear this at all.

Could you send me a sample with the problem-sound a bit louder please?
Thanks.

Greetings,
Joeri

In case anybody was wondering...if one leaves their XBase under a leaky ceiling for an entire weekend and it fills up with water...it won't work properly.
After thoroughly drying it out, my XBase starts up with what looks like a question mark on the display for about 1 second, then blinks off.  This is not good!  Beware old apartment buildings...

Who sells the XBase at list price?  I need a quote for my landlord :)

Jon
