# 0169, here. Rui bought it in late 2006, IIRC, and I read
that the last new ones were produced in the summer of 2007.
I'll hazard to guess that we're looking at fewer than 200
units, total.

Hi all!

How do you build your own kits?
I mean:
If you have a kit you like but you don't like say the snare, how can
you choose another snare?
Or: if you have a snare you like, how can you include it in a
different kit?
Are there any copy/paste or scroll functions I missed?

Thank you!

Subject: [jomox] Issues Loading new OS on 888

I am having problems loading the new OS on my 888. I tested my midi interface with the testing tool, and it checked out fine. I also tested my midi cable, and it too is fine.

When I load the new OS with the SysEx Dumper utility, the load progresses in that the LEDs light up in the following order:
1) Sequencer steps 9 through 16 lights up green
2) Sequencer steps 9 through 16 lights up red
3) The 1-8 edit/mute knobs light up green
4) The 1-8 edit/mute knobs light up red
5) The 9-16 edit/mute knobs light up green
6) The 9-16 edit/mute knobs light up red

After #6 above (about halfway through the OS load) one of the high hats triggers audibly and then the 888 throws the following error:
"Sample Engine Slave Communication Error"

After the error displays, the 888 reloads the original OS from flash (presumably) .

I am using windows xp professional. My 888 is set in bank 1 pattern 1A when I initiate the dump via the Bload function in the MIDI menu. Memory Protect is Off, of course, and I've tried the load with clock set to INT and MID. I've even set the Hats to noise to ensure that they weren't accessing the samples during the load (not that I really thought that that has anything to do with the problem). All of the Tx* functions are set to off.

The *.mid file is 114182 bytes long

What is going on? Am I doing something wrong? Is my 888 broken?

HELP!

-Jim

I will try the 1.31 OS. The ChangeLog does not mention any fix
specific to crash or error, is there really a difference between 1.30
and 1.31?

If the OS is not reliable then I must sell my XBASE999. Can any
XBASE888 owners comment on the reliability of their units compared to
the XBASE999? Has anyone seen the XBASE888 crash like this?

OSC on the Neuronium Resonator might have been a winner.

There is no provision in the OSC spec for timing, and no standard for
encapsulating MIDI note data... not that the Neuronium Resonator needs
this, right?

It would be a no-go for the SunSyn or other note-based synths, unless
you decided to completely ignore MIDI and trigger sounds by their
frequency in Hz. This is too radical and expensive to develop, given
the JoMoX "one man army" method.

Open Sound Control does not specify a physical transport layer nor
does it have a comparable cost of implementation. There's an example
of using OSC over UDP/IP with Ethernet as the physical transport
layer, which requires a relatively expensive micro controller and
RJ-45 socket. You would also be alienating users whose equipment is
all MIDI and USB-MIDI based. The lower cost and ubiquity of MIDI is
the reason why MIDI control is still widely used in designs.

It would be great to see Open Sound Control on any analogue synthesizer
hardware module. I just don't see how this can happen as a JoMoX
product, the way things are now.

Before OSC, we need open source licensed firmware code. That's another
topic, I will post on soon.

For reference on OSC: http://opensoundcontrol.org/spec-1_0

1. Y! group is too time-consuming to use

2. JoMoX firmware is not improving quickly enough to meet the

3. There are no forums to report firmware bugs, write product

Please, fellow people in the JoMoX community, hear me and be heard.

The Y! user interface is really bad and can't be helped. I don't think
the answer is yet another group, so what about asking Jürgen for a
forum on the jomox.com website?

I am frustrated with the XBase999 crash bugs. Jürgen cannot magically
find and fix all problems. If he could, there are only 24 hours in the
day, and so it still would never be done. I suspect that Jürgen may be
some kind of magic super hero anyways. Because I cannot change the day
to have 50 hours, I think we must ask Jürgen to re-license the
firmware source code with General Public License version 2 copyright.
The JoMoX community should be trusted to read the firmware source code
and improve it. I am certain to find an engineer who will fix problems
in exchange for beer. With the GPLv2 licensing, he would be required
by copyright law to provide the changes back to Jürgen and everyone in
this community. By trusting in a community to find and identify
problems, the firmware can improve more quickly.

JoMoX firmware releases are disappointing, and continue to disappoint
me. There must be a lot of time, effort, money, and thought going into
these releases, yet it is still not enough to meet the demand. I want
my JoMoX product to work. If there's something broken or buggy, then I
want a copy of the source code that is broken or buggy. I won't
pretend to know how to fix it, but some smart friend of mine may know
the answer.

For reference, there is a company successfully nurturing their
community with forums and open-source firmware code releases:

http://www.genoqs.net/

Also, the text of the source code license they use (GPLv2) can be read
and understood fully in one evening:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html

HI Eric-
Welcome to the community. I think best thing to do off the bat is to search the older threads here, as this has been discussed quite a bit in the past.  Juergen may choose to answer this email as well, but he's already had to do so several times in the recent past.  I suggest doing a search, and then forming a secondary opinion based on their review, and responding back again to the forum with your thoughts.  We are a very supportive, open, and transparent user community, and welcome your thoughts, even if JM might in the end disagree, and for very good, well-stated reasons that he's stated in the recent past.

The Y! user interface is really bad and can't be helped. I don't think

forum on the jomox.com website?

I am frustrated with the XBase999 crash bugs. Jürgen cannot magically

These reasons show someone who has not seriously considered or
educated themselves about open source firmware code:

- Not being a DIY hobbyist
- Not being Jesus
- Spending months and writing books to explain his hardware to the
person who helps write the firmware

It sounds like JM has heard and repeated a popular misconception about
open source *software*.

I don't see how being a DIY hobbyist is related to open source
firmware code licensing.

I think that the reference to Jesus is a joke and it is unfair, the
person he responded to on this community list was offering their help
without payment. Why would you reject this person's offer of help like
this, with a joke?

The time and money needed to develop the first firmware code is a sunk
cost. This is part of firmware development and it's not something that
users can do. You have to do this whether the code is open source
licensed or kept proprietary, it's a non-event.

We're talking about *firmware* which requires hardware. Open source
firmware code development is not a charity, it is a model of
most-efficient development.

Searching for these references was no easy task by the way. Y! group
search results are difficult to navigate. That's what I'm talking
about here, the community itself is okay but our tools are kind of
lame. The joke begins when we offer to help fix firmware code, like it
is impossible.

Thanks again, Eric.... let's wait to hear the Berlin Bear's response when he awakes tomorrow morning... (soon enough).
JM is very tongue in cheek in his humor... don't ever take offense to it, fwiw....

Hi Eric

Lets not forget that Jurgen does not have to justify his reasons to
not adopt open source. Simply saying "No" is sufficient; in fact, if
I were Jurgen I would struggle to find a single reason to even
consider a "Yes".

> Y! group search results are difficult to navigate.

Huh? The Yahoo interface is as simple as it gets, after all, its
designed to allow someone with very little computing experience to
navigate/search/post/etc without effort. Heck, I can even use it!

But as Mr Shaggie says, maybe Jurgen will respond in person.

I'm sorry for this little bump...
But really anyone here? Anyone who wants to build his/her own kits and
reuse a good custom made snare in another kit?
Am I missing something?

Come on Jomoxans!
