Subject: xBase Midi question
kraemer@...
Send Email Send Email

OK, I just picked up an xBase and I am having trouble with the midi.
I think that I tried everything, but I wanted to ask the group for
help. When using the xBase as a slave, it starts and stops correctly
but does not stay in sync. When using it as a master, nothing
connected to the midi out will respond. Start/stop messages, or note
on/off messages are not being sent. I have an RM1x which has lights
that indicate when Midi data is passing in or out. With the Jomox
Midi out connnected to the RM1x Midi in, the lights never even light
up. Do I have some setting wrong or is this xBase defective?

when midi clock menu "int" is selected, the jomox is master. internal clock
is used. should output midi clock. when when midi clock menu "mid" is
selected, the jomox is slaved. if its picking up SPP command then it should
be in sync. you say it drifts? is there a patchbay or daisy chain inbetween
jomox and sequencer? r.

I presume you are sending midi from the squencer/keyboard on the same midi
channel as the receive midi channel on the Airbase, eg. send and receive on
channel 10.

Subject: Re: xBase Midi question - tests
kraemer@...

I ran the following tests to try to evaluate my problems with Midi
In, Midi Out, and Midi Thru. I also used my Electribe as a substitute
for the Jomox to make sure that what I thought was supposed to happen
was happening when using the ER-1. Here are the tests that I ran:

Jomox Midi In
1) Test for syncronization
Jomox clock set to "Mid", midi mode set to "SM1"
RM1x set to be a master device
Cable connected from RM1x Midi out to Jomox Midi in
Jomox starts and stops with RM1x, but drifts out of sync!

2) Test for note on/off
Jomox clock set to "Mid", midi mode set to "SM1"
	 Controller keyboard connected
Cable connected from RM1x Midi out to Jomox Midi in
Jomox drums respond correctly to note input from the keyboard

Jomox Midi Out
1) Test for syncronization
Jomox clock set to "Int", midi mode set to "SM1"
RM1x set to be a slave device
Cable connected from Jomox Midi out to RM1x Midi in
RM1x does not start and stop with Jomox, Midi data lights on
RM1x do not light

2) Test for note on/off
Jomox clock set to "Int", midi mode set to "SM1", midi
channel set to "1"
RM1x set to be a slave device, piano voice selected on
channel "1"
Cable connected from Jomox Midi out to RM1x Midi in
RM1x does not respond when Jomox drums are triggered, Midi
data lights on RM1x do not light!

3) Test for Jomox Ramp Mode (external sequencer)
Jomox clock set to "Int", midi mode set to "SM1", Ramp
channel set to "1"
RM1x set to be a slave device, piano voice selected on
channel "1"
Cable connected from Jomox Midi out to RM1x Midi in
RM1x does not respond to Ramp settings, Midi data lights on
RM1x do not light!

Jomox Midi Thru
1) Test
Jomox clock set to "Int", midi mode set to "SM1", Ramp
channel set to "1"
RM1x set to be a slave device, piano voice selected on
channel "1"
a)Keyboard connected directly to RM1x Midi in, Midi channel
set to "1"
RM1x responds to keyboard input, Midi data lights light
when each key is pressed.
b)Keyboard connected to Jomox Midi in, RM1x Midi in connected
to Jomox Midi thru
RM1x does not respond to keyboard input, Midi data lights
do not light!

Any suggestions?

hi

i have ordered a sunsyn and i made a page for it (it's not complete). you
can reach it at

  http://www.synapse.tm/beam

for any comment, don't hesitate to contact me.

some mail, in the section mails in german are in german, so don't
complain... ;)

the first mail covers the updating via flash, rco's and waveforms. the
second mail describes the routing elements: both (saw + square) are allways
on and accessible via the routing elements...

I was playing around with the LFOs on my new Xbase, and then realized that
I couldn't assign LFO2 to modulate the frequency of LFO1. Is this a bug in
OS 2.09 or do I have a faulty unit?

So I didn't understand why the LFO scheme was implemented
this way, but the good person at Jomox took the time to

Great so far...after making the conceptual leap between pattern and
perform modes, I finally took a liking to the programming model. It can
sound fairly close to my old 909, and so much more. And I definitely don't
miss the toms from the 909, so I think I'm set. I wish it had the old 808
cowbell sound, though, because that sound on the 808 was so addicting.

Love that I can tweak sound parameters & shuffle on each individual step,
and that I can change patterns while still in write mode. Song mode is
even easier to use than on a 909 IMO.

Overall, a brilliant machine if you're willing pay $800 for one.

Keep in mind, too, that all of the knobs send and transmit midi data and the
XBase is velocity sensitive when triggered externally.

Also, does everyone know how to set the kick drum tuning to be chromatic
rather than linear? That way creating musical lines is simple...

Actually the airbase is even more tweakable as there are more parameters in
general and many more voices to tweak. The only drawback is that the xbase
has a knob per parameter whereas on the airbase you're dealing with midi
controllers.

Hello,

theoretically yes, but the XBase has a smaller sound Rom that does not
include the 4 alternative hi hats and percussions. The correspondend adress
lines are NOT decoded in the XBase, so just "upgrading" by putting an
AirBase Sound Rom into the XBase will not work (It would just be the same
like the XBase Rom).
I've recently done a custom made modification for a friendly musician here
in Berlin to simply switch AirBase percussion sounds in the XBase by an
add-on rotary switch. It works fine and is fairly cool... but it has to be
done by a technician and is not for free. So if you are interested...
