Subject: Xbase midi lag?
selsyn@...
Send Email Send Email

hi list:
Either me, or my Xbase is ill.

I'm having a small 'creeping' timing error in the Xbase's midi
output. I'm sorry if this has been covered here already,
If you can forward me to the correct archives it would be very
helpful.

Why does the Xbase(ROMv2.09) seem to feed MIDI clock that causes a
'creeping ahead' of the tempo into my sequencer's time base? Is this a
design flaw, or a feature?

The Xbase's internal sequencer's performance, does not
stay in time with the sequencer/sequence driven from it. I'm using Doepfer
Schaltwerk slave'd to the Xbase's midi clock. The error is very slight, about
5milliseconds (.005sec) every 4 minutes or so. I can fix it by stopping
and starting, but that gets old fast...

When I slave the Xbase's timebase to Schaltwerk's midi timing clock,
everything is fine. Even running all day.

The hard part is, I don't know whats wrong. I *really* like the
Xbase, and don't want to give it up as master tempo controller for the rig.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your input,
/jk

jk, are you able to test your xbase out with something else? Are you sure
it's not the Schaltwerk or a bad midi chord?

Hi--

I should be FINALLY picking up the airbase within a few weeks. But
then the question comes to controlling it. Does anyone have a
recommendation? At home i plan to begin working with Logic, so it
shouldn't be a big deal there, but live i don't want a computer.

Currently i just have a mc-5o5 and a cheapy controller key. But i'm
thinking something with lots of knobs would be good for the airbase
paramaters eh? Love to hear what you guys use. Thanks!

My Xbase, now 3 months old, is malfunctioning. Approx. 15 minutes after
powering up and running the sequencer, I hear a small 'pop' and then the
audio drops out. The sequencer keeps running and I can access all of it's
various functions, but I get no sound. If I power the unit down and then
back up again (waiting a full 30 seconds in between) the unit performs
normally for about 2 minutes before the problem resurfaces. I have repeated
this process several times, each time with the same results.

Any ideas as to the source of my problem? It sounds to me like a hardware
issue. If so, what is my best recourse for having the unit repaired or
replaced?

Thanks.

when i first got my xbase09 it was shipped to my work and i then immediately
left with it for a trip- i had no way of hearing it without headphones, and
even though it didn't have a headphone out, i must confess i plugged a pair
into the main mono out just to hear it on one side... :)

the point is, i had this same problem with the sound dropping out of it when
i did this with headphones... it would play for awhile... then "pop!" and no
sound, but everything would function... repower, sound for a few minutes and
"pop!" no sound.

i quickly stopped plugging these headphones into the output where they had
no place to be in the first palce, brought it home, cabled it up to my mixer
and everything has been fine since.

so i have to ask how you are listening to your jomox. i know that you can
clip an output if your are interfacing it with a device that is looking for
a lower or hotter voltage.

r.

i then stopped using headphones

I looked into the 10Control before I chose the Xbase over the RBase. You
can order directly from IBK in Germany. There's no North American
distributor, unless you're interested in the 4Control (4 knobs, not 10).
Native Instruments is reselling that one.

The price for the 10Control is $649 USD, but they will probably waive the
duty, so it should come to about $618. The web address (if you don't
already have it) is www.ibk-midi.de. I was corresponding with Uwe Keinki
about availability and pricing.

Ryan,

Oddly enough, I was routing through the front video/aux jacks of my TV to my
home receiver (as my mixer was unavailable at the time and front inputs are
easier to access). While the TV inputs are standard RCA, I will try your
suggestion and plug it back into my mixer when I have a chance. I doubt
this is the problem, though, as my mixer also accepts standard RCA (I use
the same cable in both instances, with one 1/4" plug and one RCA connection,
sometimes with an additional Y-splitter).

Thanks,
Doug

That's why I ended up with the xBase. All that extra $$$ for 3 toms seemed
silly. With the Ramp page, I can sequence 3 addt'l. voices anyway. The
10Control is an extremely versatile controller, though, and worth the cash
if you can spend it.

I'd like to say, I was probably one of the happiest drum programmers when I
first got my xbase09. There was a problem with the Hi-Hat output where it
would cut in and out and I would have to finagle with the plug to get it hot
again. This finally got to the point where the box was unusable and on top
of that, I now get an annoying hum out of the it. After sending the unit
BACK TO GERMANY for repair (which took about 3 months btw), I still have a
horrible hum/feedback sound coming out of the box. It's actually WORSE than
it was when I sent it back. Jomox owes me big fuckin' time. I'm quickly
becomeing ANTI-FUCKIN'-JOMOX. I'd like to also make it clear that I am in
no way putting any of this blame on John Van Nest. He did his best to help
me get it fixed.

Todd,

A couple of quick questions...is the hum coming out of all outputs? Is it
there at any volume level? Have you tried plugging the unit in elsewhere to
see if it is some interference with another piece of gear? I presume you've
flipped the plug over? Let me know and we'll continue to make yours a
positive experience!

This drum machine looks like it would make a great controller and might
compliment the 5o5 and airbase sounds well to give me a complete drum
package. I know qm is dead, so anyone know where i can scrounge one of

bien..
MESI.7 rue Rouvet75019 PARIS
TEL/0140051718 FAX/0140050011
well...
now in english...
there is a new dealer for jomox's produts in france...it's realy a good new for me cause sometime my xbase is very strange...with the internal séquenceur or with cubase....turnly realy mad...and some others problems....but this is one of the firstOSversion...and when i was phoning to the distributor or the dealer(the old)they
've always said"yes we know but this is jomox...there're too much problems...we can't nothing for you..."and i'was realy furious....
i hope that mesi is better....but they have the new.OS and the priceis realy different(150ff now 600ff before.....)
realy cool no????

Yes, 2.09 is the latest OS. You can purchase just the ROM from several
places, non of which I have handy at the moment. Anyhow, it's something to
look into.

Before I post it on eBay I thought I'd let people know here that I'm selling
my Xbaseo9. I absolutely love it to death, but it's a bit more specialized
than I need right now. I'll no doubt get another one later, but for now I'm
going to get an RM1x to have a hardware sequencer and it can still be my
drums. Yeah the drums of the RM suck when comparing the quality to the
Xbase, but for where I am at it would be better for me... I can't afford to
have the two machines or I would... it's rather painful to see this bad boy
go.

It's got the latest 2.09 on it. And for what it's worth I've not had any
problems out of it (excluding my own misunderstanding haha). I still have
the warrentee card, the original box all that stuff... hell I think I even
have the rubber band that when around the cord :-) Needless to say it's in
mint condition, it's only 3 months old, and I don't smoke or gig so it's in
the same exact shape as when I bough it.

The musicians at my work have all commented that my drum sounds are killer
in the stuff I've done thanks to this box. The punch this thing has in
sooooo incredible.

You guys already have a Jomox drum machine no doubt, but rather than auction
it at evil-Bay where prices get out of hand I wanted to see if any of you
wanted it because you've been helpful.

Send me an Email (listed below) if you want it.

Oh and the price is $649 o.b.o. which is $100 less than any new price I've
seen.

No flames about me selling it for an RM please. :-) I REALLY am going to
get another xbase later. Unless they make a new x0x style machine that is
somehow better and sounds at least this good. :-)

Have Fun,
James
