In any poll of fan favorites, Journey would be marked No. 1 on millions of
ballots, even though the core members are advancing to the critical age in rock
and roll.
Guitarist prodigy Neal Schon left Santana 31 years ago to form his own band and
has been the one consistent Journeyman to the present day.
Shortly after inception, keyboardist Gregg Rolie also abandoned Santana to hook
up with his former bandmate.
During their prime, Journey charted eight albums that rode to multi–platinum
status on hits like "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Separate Ways."
The lineup Steamboat fans will see features Steve Augeri on lead vocals, Schon,
bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and drummer Deen Castronovo. Cain
and Schon have teamed in Journey in the past.
The big question for many fans is whether Journey is Journey without Steve
Perry's trademark vocals. It wasn't until Perry joined the band in the late '70s
that Journey hit it big.
Perry was forced into retirement by health problems in 1996, when a degenerative
hip condition made long stage hours impossible.
Described in less delicate publications as a Steve Perry clone, replacement
Augeri has fronted Journey since 1996.
A little research into post–1996 Journey concert reviews yields an enthusiastic
head nod that the band journeys on nicely with Augeri, with even the harshest of
critics admitting that Augeri handles his "Perry sound–alike" fate perfectly.
Castronovo is a former Ozzy Osbourne drummer. Valory left Journey in 1984 and
returns to the fold.
All the members sing, and the rich Journey sound should stand forth tonight on
the waterfront.
