Journey's concert on the Steamboat Days battleground last night was the nostrum
to Thursday's mega–metal collision. Journey did with one set what the previous
five bands couldn't do together in an entire evening.

Journey played tight arrangements that included memorable vocal melodies — yes,
actual melodies — and clean background harmonies — yup, harmonies.

Journey dressed like they they have unique, enviable jobs, instead of slouching
about in clothes a working guy would wear to paint their girlfriend's house.

Journey acted like they were privileged to be on the Steamboat stage, instead of
dissing the crowd with crude narcissism.

The whole band interacted with the crowd.

Don and Donna Swink of Burlington had but one comparison to the slugfest of the
previous evening.

"I could understand everything they said," Don compared Journey to the previous
evening's profane screamers.

Sharon Peters of Gulfport managed to stop bopping in the VIP coop long enough to
enthuse about Journey.

"I'd love to see them come back!" she squealed. "I love to sing along with
them!"

Teresa Wilson came up from Las Vegas for the concert.

"I picked this date to see family here because Journey was playing," Wilson
said. "It's easier to see them here than in Vegas."

It's difficult to cipher the subtle differences between a polished, professional
touring act — Journey — and an offhand, over–amped bunch of who–cares. Details
lie in little things such as musical structure, vocal nuance, and using silence.

Silence is the loudest note you can sing, and with a rock guitar, it is the
single note that sets lightweights aside while the big dogs strut the stage.

Neal Schon is that kind of guitarist. The only player of his caliber in the
arena rock vein may well be Steve Lukather of Toto.

And all Steve Perry fans had to do was close their eyes and listen to his
replacement, Steve Augeri, and they were transported back to 1980 and beyond.

Nice job, boys. Come back anytime.

regards,
