Though best known as the driving force behind Journey, local guitar hero Neal
Schon is keeping himself busy with a number of projects these days. In addition
to a pending instrumental solo album and an upcoming new release with Journey,
Schon is going back to his hard-rock roots with a new group, Soul Sirkus.
Born out of the ashes of Planet Us, a project featuring Schon and current
Journey drummer Deen Castronovo had embarked on with Sammy Hagar and Michael
Anthony prior to the reunion of Van Halen, Soul Sirkus came together when Schon
approached vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (who first made a name with guitar god
Yngwie Malmsteen in the '80s) and journeyman bass virtuoso Marco Mendoza (who
has worked with Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Ted Nugent, Ozzy Osbourne and many
others) to fill out the group.
Soul Sirkus explores a melodic yet edgy hard-rock sound that longtime Schon fans
who loved his less pop-oriented approach on Journey's early albums and the
guitar pyrotechnics heard when he was a youthful member of Santana are sure to
enjoy. The new group flexes its muscles when it plays songs from the band's
recently released debut effort at the Fillmore.
