Thought Of The Day
Dangers of Pride

Of all the dangers which beset man's mortal nature and jeopardize his spiritual integrity, pride is the greatest. Courage is valorous, but egotism is vainglorious and suicidal.

+++ WHAT'S NEW

Last Friday a group of us went out to Roppongi to look for
locations for future Metropolis magazine events and
afterward we hit the T.G.I. Fridays restaurant close to
Roppongi Crossing for some fast food. There may be a
recession going on, but Friday's was full to overflowing,
and people looked like they were having a good time. The
five of us had as much as we could possibly eat (the plates
are impossibly huge) and plenty of beer, and yet the total
bill only came to JPY14,000.

Leaving the store, we couldn't help but think that when
people get depressed due to economic or other
circumstances, what's the normal cure? Well, they will seek
out a cheap and cheerful place to meet friends and forget
their cares for a while. We believe that T.G.I. Fridays is
just such a place, and therefore, in much the same manner
as Uniqlo and Nitori -- the restaurant chain is providing
people with a way to enjoy themselves but at a much lower
price than a year ago.

It's probably no accident that Friday's is run by a smart
restaurant operator, named Watami. You may never have heard
of them, but you would surely recognize some of the
hundreds of pubs and restaurants that they own and run
around Japan, including Watami, Za-Watami, Nagomitei,
Gohan, Wataminchi, and of course T.G.I. Friday’s.

------- Need a furnished/serviced office in Tokyo? --------

Space Design's SOHO office spaces are the answer to the
executive who wants to reduce initial cost (no key money,
flexible contract terms) and keep monthly rent transparent
and predictable (no operating costs or extra monthly
charges).

With locations in Toranomon, Kyobashi, Kojimachi and more,
Space Design offers compact office space to many companies
getting started in Tokyo.
Many firms use these spaces to register new offices in Tokyo
or to downsize on current space without giving up
prestigious locales or access to rental meeting rooms,
reception, etc.

about how they can support your growth and success.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[...Article continues]

Basically Watami is one of those hard-core Japanese firms
that sets a standard of excellence both in its focus and
its ability to extract a profit out of what has to be an
incredibly difficult business segment -- despite the
current recession. The company is involved in the entire
"food chain" of the restauranting business, including
running its own farms (even a fish farm) to grow the
produce it serves. Watami is in fact a pioneer in company-run
farming, having started its first operation more than 10
years ago. Today its various farms supply about 20% of the
leafy vegetables used in its 600+ restaurants.

Owning your own farms may not sound like a big deal, but
as a side note, Japan has laws to protect individual
holdings of farm land. Until a recent law change, companies
could only hold up to 10% of a given farm, and so they
would have to enter into weak lease arrangements with the
traditional farmer-owners. With the new law change,
corporates can now hold up to 25% -- providing extra
leverage when negotiating with farmers for control of
their operations. Based on this legal change, Watami
apparently plans to lease even more land, in Oita, to start
a large organic farm. This is smart because organic veges
command a premium in Japanese-style restaurants these days
and are certainly an attractant for young health-conscious
female customers.

Watami has had a hard time of it over the last three years,
but the company seems to be coming right now, thanks
partly to a change of the old guard earlier this year, and
also due to some very tough restructuring and cost control
measures. From FY2007 through to FY2008 (ending March 31st,
2009), the company's sales fell a dramatic 43% to JPY23.7bn
(US$263m), however at the same time net profit over the
same period actually climbed 50% to JPY1.876bn (US$20.84m).

Apparently restaurant sales are down about another 6%
for the first half of this year, but it looks like profits
will remain steady or even improve a bit.

What is important to know about Watami, is that in addition
to bringing its restaurant operations under control, the
firm made a very smart move into a second business area a
few years ago -- that of running nursing homes. As a
result, the consolidated revenues of the firm in March this
year were JPY111bn (US$1.23bn) and the consolidated net
profit was JPY2.56bn (US$28.45m).

Like restaurants, nursing homes are also notoriously difficult
to make money out of, but Watami seems to be able to do
this, thanks in no small way to a high 95% occupancy rate.
It's interesting to see how they are squeezing profits from
this stone. Sales are up because last year they bought a
company named Takushoku that makes and delivers obento
(boxed lunches) for the elderly. We suppose that after
someone gets fed at home by Watami, it's only a short sales
pitch before they are ensconced in one of its 44 nursing
homes as well -- another consumption point for those farms!

All the company needs to do now is go into the water and
electricity businesses, and they will have all the inputs
to their nursing home operations tied up.

Watami, being the kind of company it is, is taking no
chances with the flow of customers over the bonenkai
(year-end parties) season, which is normally one of the
busiest times of year for restaurants and pubs. This year
they are issuing meal vouchers worth 50% of the bill for
parties booked before the end of this month (November). So
if you're thinking of holding a bonenkai, get your
reservation done now and experience some positive
deflation...!

Lastly, don't forget that our sister company, Metropolis is
launching Japan's first international Konkatsu party --
otherwise known as the Metropolis Cupid Party, on
November 29th (last Sunday in November). See you
there.

------- Do You Really Need a Full-time Accountant? --------

Your business is under pressure and you've already cut your
marketing and travel budgets. What else is there? In fact,
you might be surprised. An outsourced accountant can cost
a lot less than a full-time one and yet still get through
the same amount of work.

LINC Media's Back Office team offers outsourced accountants
to either work on your premises or ours. The secret in
saving money is three-fold:
1. Your accountant probably doesn't need to be in the
office full time, but reliable part-timers are hard to come
by -- so using an outsourced accountant causes you to only
pay for the hours you need.
2. Finding a bilingual accountant takes so long that most
firms accept the higher cost of keeping one on full-time.
LINC Media's staff are bilingual and are available now.
3. We allocate level-appropriate work to various staff
inside our back office operation, meaning that you're not
paying high-end Senior Accountant wages for low-end
functions, such as data entry.

-> Diners stay away from restaurants

Proof that people are actively cutting back on the small
pleasures in life, including eating out, the Nikkei
reports that the wholesale price for cooking oil -- paid by
restaurants, has dropped about 3% in November versus the
month earlier. The wholesale price for cooking oil is now
at its lowest level since March 2004. According to the
Nikkei, prices have dropped even as manufacturing costs are
going up, largely because of wholesalers trying to
stimulate sales again after the Kao Econa oil scandal (the
oils were found to have carcinogenic substances last
month). But as Nikkei notes, the strategy doesn't seem to
be working -- because the problem isn't availability, it's
lack of customers. (Source: TT commentary from
nikkei.co.jp, Nov 21, 2009)

-> Blood test for early detection of Alzheimers

MCBI Inc., a biotech start-up licencing research by the
University of Tsukuba, has announced that it has developed
a blood test that may help detect Alzheimer's disease early
on. Following on from research at the UCLA in the USA and
elsewhere over the last couple of years, MCBI says it can
detect (umm.... err...) two peptides in the blood which
appear to occur in a precursor ailment to Alzheimers, known
as MCI. MCBI says that it will start clinical trials and
hopes to bring the test to market in 2015. ***Ed: This is
an exciting breakthrough, and we're sure that the analysis
of the peptides in question will be picked up by other labs
around the world -- just as soon as they can remember where
they put those darned lab notes!** (Source: TT commentary
from nikkei.co.jp, Nov 21, 2009)

-> Post Office to figure in finances again

As Junichiro Koizumi understood, the Japanese Post Office
represents a gigantic savings cookie jar that politicians
just can't keep their fingers out of. Between the Post Bank
and the Post Insurance organizations, the group holds about
JPY300trn (US$3.376trn) in public savings and government
bonds. So now the DPJ is now floating a trial balloon
whereby they are considering having the Post Office start
lending money to regional companies in an attempt to help
outlying firms get past the current credit crunch. ***Ed:
Our take is that this is but the first move, and the DPJ
will go "whole hog" next year and put the Post savings
hoard to work on funding many more government programs. The
problem, of course, is that the Post Office is in fact
already the largest investor in government bonds, so in a
way this will be a case of Peter robbing Paul.** (Source:
TT commentary from reuters.com, Nov 21, 2009)

-> da Vinci med-bot approved by Ministry of Health

In what could represent a revolution in surgical
procedures in Japan, Sunnyvale, California-based Intuitive
Surgical announced on Friday that its robotic surgery
system, da Vinci, has received regulatory approval from the
Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), allowing the
company to start marketing the machine in Japan. The da
Vinci is an amazing device that looks like it's from the
future. It allows surgeons to do complex surgery using an
interactive console located some distance away from the
patient. The surgeon controls a range of four robotic arms
located on a gurney containing the patient. The arms are
fitted with scalpels and other tools. The point of da
Vinci is to scale and filter the surgeon's hand movements
into more precise movements of the robotic arms. The result
is tremendous precision and dexterity, thus allowing
surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures even
though there may be complex dissection and reconstruction
work needed. ***Ed: In terms of industry impact, this is
Lasik all over again, but this time for prostate cancer and
other ailments.** (Source: TT commentary from cnn.com and
Intuitive's own PR website, Nov 20, 2009)

+++ CORRECTIONS/FEEDBACK

In this section we run comments and corrections submitted
by readers. We encourage you to spot our mistakes and
amplify our points, by email, to editors@....

*** In TT534 we discussed the new rules to compel
foreigners to take out Health Insurance in order to get
their visas renewed -- even though for Japanese there is no
criminal penalty for not paying the insurance. We received
many comments about the discriminatory aspects and also
some about how the Japanese health system is way too
expensive for what it offers. One of the best of these
letters is from the reader below...

Our Reader Says:
I have been on Japanese National Health for over 15 years
and recently lost a baby tooth which had somehow managed
to hang on for 37+ years. Investigating replacement options
I was disturbed to find that the only replacement method
would would be a bridge, which would damage the surrounding
(one front, one lateral, and both perfectly healthy) teeth
by shaving them down and fitting them with crowns which
would in turn hold a replacement tooth in the gap in
between.

An implant is the only way to replace a missing tooth
in a situation like this, without damage to surrounding
teeth, but this procedure is not covered by JNH at all.
Indeed, I don't even have the option of claiming the amount
that a bridge would have cost.

Given that the total cost of an implant is around 300,000
to 400,000 yen, combined with the absolute necessity of
filling in the gap -- missing teeth can cause other
serious health problems in addition to the inconvenience
and purely cosmetic considerations, this was quite
upsetting.

My dentist explained the JNH policy and that although he
agreed that there should be coverage. He reckons it will
take some time for coverage to catch up with more advanced
care. As with everything in Japan, this... takes...
tiiiiiiiime......

Having just read a New York Times article
(http://s.nyt.com/u/CWA), which appeared coincidentally
only 4 days after I forked out cash for my implant
procedure, I am even more convinced that JNH needs to be
revised to cover dental implants and for dentists to be
given more authority to decide which care is appropriate.
It should be clear that for younger and even many older
patients needing to replace teeth, bridges are neither a
quality option nor a cost-effective one.

We respond:
We think it’s only the Japanese themselves who think their
health care system is world class. It’s definitely good as
a baseline service, but if you want anything new or fancy,
the system fails its subscribers -- and what's worse is
that there is no "middle way", allowing someone to make up
the difference between the mandated treatment cost and
something that they may actually want.

AMERICAN RED CROSS: Special Message from Celebrity Jimmy Smits
Dear Friend of the Red Cross,

Watch the ad and give the gift that saves the dayIt’s one thing to play heroic characters in movies and on TV, but heroic acts in real life don’t involve stunts or special effects. They involve people who provide hope to those in need, in simple but meaningful, life-changing ways.

That’s why I’m proud to be a supporter of the American Red Cross. The gift you make today could give someone shelter after their house has burned down. It could provide a patient with the blood transfusion they need in an emergency surgery or it could make sure a child receives a life-saving measles vaccination.

I am honored and privileged to be collaborating once again with the Red Cross for their 2009 Holiday Giving Campaign, which is kicking off in the coming weeks, and we wanted to give you a sneak peak at the TV ad.

Watch the ad now—then consider making the one gift that you can always count on to save the day.

Your gift of any size will make a difference in someone’s life—giving them hope when they need it most.

Be someone’s hero this holiday season. Donate now:

Thanks so much and happy holidays!

A Killer's Identity Crisis

Don and Marianne Wilkinson were enjoying a quiet evening in their North Richland Hills, Texas home when their door bell was rung by an unexpected visitor.

When Marianne went to see who it was, she couldn't possibly have foreseen that the unknown caller would tragically cut her life short.

Cops say whoever was at the door shot her several times and ran off, leaving her to die on her own front porch shortly thereafter. The neighborhood was baffled, to say the least.

"Marianne was a loving woman who was just hanging out with her husband that night minding her own business," says AMW producer Carolina Alban-Stroughton, who worked on the story. "She just went to answer the doorbell and was killed. She had no enemies, nobody would've wanted to do anything to her."

Eventually, a concerned neighbor came forward with a theory. The neighbor said that a couple living one street over from the Wilkinson's home had been going through a difficult divorce, and she believed that the husband had put a hit on his wife.

The divorce involved a fierce battle over ownership of a trucking company. The caller said the couple's house had the same street number, and both were the second house on the right.

"The theory cops have to go on is that it might have been a case of mistaken identity," Carolina said. "Cops strongly believe Marianne was not meant to die that night, but somebody else."

Although cops suspected a murderer-for-hire, they had few leads until the murder weapon was found a few months later, on Easter Sunday.

"Det. Tony Roten had the best piece of evidence any detective could hope for," Carolina said. "He brought it back to the lab, checked for ballistics, and it was a match. He also had the shell casings believed to have been used that night, and swept both the gun and the shell casings for DNA and fingerprints. Those tests turned up nothing."

It seemed like a dead end when Det. Roten received a call from the Texas Rangers, who had been helping him early on in the investigation.

"They told him they heard about this new technology in the UK discovered by this scientist, Dr. John Bond," Carolina said. "They told Det. Roten to contact him."

Dr. Bond had developed an advanced method of enhancing fingerprints that allows investigators to lift fingerprints from metal surfaces -- even if the surfaces had been wiped clean.

The method had proven successful in cases as old as ten years.

"It's a revolutionary technique, named one of Time Magazine's best inventions of 2008." Carolina said. "Dr. Bond got a partial fingerprint of one of the shell casings, which is great. But he still doesn't have a match, so that's where our viewers come in."

John Walsh and the AMW crew traveled to London to meet with Dr. Bond and see him in action. You can see Dr. Bond demonstrate his method on this Saturday's show, but in the meantime, you can check out extended interviews with Det. Roten and Marianne's family on AMW.com.

Stealth and Witness

Since the late 19th century, the Italian mafia has been operating in the United States. For decades, the FBI and other government agencies did everything they could to clip the wings of La Cosa Nostra, using methods like wire tapping and federal statutes.

After all their efforts, the FBI did indeed managed to reduce the power and influence of the National Crime Syndicate tremendously. Only problem is, while the Italians were the most prolific, they weren't the only nationalities getting into the act.

"According to the FBI, the Italian mafia was so powerful for so long that it took so many federal resources to dismantle them," says AMW correspondent Jon Leiberman, who worked on the story. "While all the focus was on the Italian mafia there were other crime syndicates that were rising up."

One of those groups were the Albanians, whose rise to prominence tasked the FBI with playing catch up. Cops say Albanian crime groups are not only more ruthless and violent, but harder to trace as well.

While the Italians were organized neatly into crime families of bosses, capos, and soldiers, the Albanians work together on specific schemes and then split up.

This difficultly led the FBI to launch Operation Black Eagle, a full on sweep of Albanian criminal enterprises across the globe. Part of this plan involved a bold and dangerous move: planting an undercover agent into their circles.

"They go through a ton of training to prep these guys. So many things have to fall into place," Jon said. "The undercover had to study Albanian culture because you have to understand it. You have to be able to really read people. It's dangerous, if his identity were compromised in this operation, there would've been major trouble."

But it paid off. Through boasting of criminal contacts and the ability to generate money, the undercover rose up in the organization. It eventually led him to two of the most powerful men in the community: Myfit Dika and Kujtim Lika.

Cops say Lika and Dika headed an operation that shipped heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, Oxycontin, firearms, steroids, you name it.

"It took a good four years for them to get totally entrenched with their undercover agent," Jon said. "It's amazing to see fugitives like Lika and Dika so comfortable around him. They truly thought he was one of them. You'll see them together hanging out on surveillance tape. The whole dynamic between them is really amazing."

But when authorities zeroed in on some two dozen suspects in New York and New Jersey, Lika and Dika somehow managed to escape.

"That's where we come in," Jon said.

We're hoping our viewers may have information regarding their whereabouts, but Jon also hopes the story serves as a caveat for other crime organizations.

"Cases like this send a good message that they may think they're operating under the radar, but the FBI and other agencies are right there and they'll do whatever to bring them down," Jon said.

Check out the piece this Saturday night. In the meantime, you can get the full story on AMW.com, as well as witness surveillance videos of the pair cutting up heroin and hanging out at a casino.

+++ WHAT'S NEW

With all the attention going to fast fashion, especially
with the zooming sales and profits of Uniqlo and H&M, it is
easy to forget that there are other huge segments of the
clothing industry that are also still doing OK, if not
perhaps as spectacularly. These include the mature female
mail order market, which is still large and active -- and
which is likely to continue growing given the graying of
our society and people's lessening interest in having to
hit the streets to shop.

There is also the children's market, babies and toddlers in
particular, and it is in this sector that several
interesting pieces of news came out in the press this week.

First up was Softbank Investment Holdings' buyout of
Narumiya, a leading childrens wear manufacturer and
retailer. Narumiya, like other children's clothiers has
been under severe pressure over the last few years to adapt
to changing demographics and shopping habits of young
mothers and grandmothers.

SBI picked up a remaining tranche of shares last week, to
give it 90% of the company. SBI paid around JPY1.37bn for
this tranche -- we don't know what was paid previously.
However, if their 90% was at the JPY4.765bn market cap
valuation, then they paid quite a high price for a company
with JPY20.2bn in revenues but also with a whopping
JPY1.371bn loss last fiscal year.

It will be interesting to see what SBI wants to do with
this investment. The current CEO of Narumiya seems
reasonably switched on and has decided to push the Internet
side of the business. This is smart, because young mothers
these days are definitely Internet shoppers. Who wants to
drag screaming kids around stores looking for clothing for
them when you can stick them in front of the TV while
you're on the PC? If the Internet strategy is successful,
what Narumiya will do with those 1,343 employees (as of
January 31, 2008) and 983 stores throughout Japan is
anyone's guess -- although one can imagine that a big
hatchet may be part of their future.

The other news item was that Hennes & Mauritz AB, better
known as H&M, is thinking about opening stores focusing on
children's and youth clothing. They are obviously already
experimenting with this segment with their new Shinjuku
store which opened on Saturday. Shades of Gap Kids...

[...Article continues]

So what is going on in the kid's sector? Do these companies
(H&M and SBI) know something that we don't about Japanese
demographics? We thought the kids sector was destined to
get a lot worse. The small recovery blip in births during
the period 2006-2008 was due to the mini recovery in the
economy between 2004 and 2007, and given that there was a
negative population gain last year of just over 51,000
people, greater decreases in the number of kids still seems
inevitable.

Just in case you're wondering, that recovery blip in births
really was likely tied to the mini financial recovery of
2004 through 2007. A researcher with Dai-ichi Life Research
Institute said as much a couple of months ago in the Nikkei
when he commented that, "Since the 1950s, the birthrate and
the gross domestic product have been moving almost in
sync." As far as we are concerned, this is proof positive
that Japanese young couples could make more babies if they
wanted to, but being conservative, they worry about their
financial futures.

Of course all of our financial futures are less sure than
they were a year ago, and with the news this week that even
the bonuses of employees at major listed and private firms
will drop by more than 14% over last year, pretty much puts
the kabosh on a baby boom happening anytime soon.

Still, Japan does manage to produce 1m babies a year and
what with plenty of rich grandparents around, and now the
ability to shop on the internet, both SBI and H&M are
probably betting that fewer babies will translate into those
that do arrive being spoiled and dressed up more. So there
could be some longer term future in kid's clothes, we guess.

More than being strategic, though, we suspect that SBI's
acquisition is more likely to be an opportunistic one, where
they are able to buy at the bottom of the market. We know
of other children's clothing companies in financial trouble
and who are looking for investors or buyers. One such
company started making approaches to foreign investors
earlier this year, offering up their JPY3.5bn in sales for
a very reasonable price. Given the current financial
environment, to buy in to such an opportunity, you
either have to be independently very deep pocketed or
to be well entrenched in the domestic children's
clothing business already, so as to quickly "bolt on"
the newly acquired company and suck the costs out of
it. We're waiting to see if any major foreign private equity
players will take notice of these opportunities and buy in.

One of the challenges of buying a Japanese brand, versus
building one from scratch such as H&M is doing, is that the
clothing market here is extremely segmented and consumers
are very demanding. No thanks to Uniqlo, customers are now
being educated that they can get a lot more for a lot less
money, and that they're less willing to pay higher prices
unless they are getting clearly unique styles and designs.
This of course is hard for a big foreign player to do, and
so the best fit for a successful foreign-money M&A would be
the opportunity to take the Japanese brand overseas,
creating some early returns on the investment, while
gradually rebuilding the design and sales network here in
Japan.

As mentioned, it will be very interesting to see what SBI
does with Narumiya. Our guess is that they will operate the
business, goose it up a bit with online alliances with
Yahoo, suck out as many costs as possible, then wait the
2-3 years needed til the economy picks up sufficiently to
get a good price selling the asset to a major foreign firm.
By then the birth rate will enjoy another financial recovery
blip and this will be all the encouragement an expanding
foreign business would need to make an offer.

Lastly, a little bit of fun... Our sister company,
Metropolis is launching Japan's first international
Konkatsu party on November 29th (last Sunday in November).
It's appropriately nick-named the Metropolis Cupid Party.

If you've been reading Terrie's Take (Number TT533), you'll
know that Kekkon Katsudo (Konkatsu: modern match-making)
has been all the craze with Japanese singles for about 18
months now, and the trend is showing no signs of slowing
down. Metropolis has teamed up with a mid-ranked Konkatsu
company White Key, to bring up to 100 Japanese and 100
non-Japanese together for a Japanese-style konkatsu party.

Now, this isn't your standard rock music and beer party.
Attendees are going specifically because they want to meet
a partner, and the program will be run Japanese style,
which may seem a little strange at first -- especially (so
we're told) the speed dating part of the program. However,
for a unique experience and the chance to meet a life
partner, this should be a really interesting event.
Metropolis has already had 50 people sign up, so there are
still seats for any adventurous souls out there.

For more details, go to metropolis.co.jp/cupid.

If you were arrested or had a serious accident in Japan,
who would be there to help you? The short answer is, unless
you're living with a spouse or partner, probably no one.

That's why The Japan Helpline, run by Ken Joseph, is so
important.

We are renewing our appeal to readers to join us in being
one of JHELP's "One Hundred Club" members. If just 100
people sign up to give 3,000 yen per month to Ken's team,
they will be able to cover their costs so that they can
continue to help those of us in need.

1. Your accountant probably doesn't need to be in the
office full time, but reliable part-timers are hard to come
by -- so use an outsourced accountant causes you to only
pay for the hours you need.
2. Finding a bilingual accountant takes so long that most
firms accept the higher cost of keeping one on full-time.
LINC Media's staff are bilingual and are able to interact
with Head Office.
3. We allocate level-appropriate work to various staff
inside our back office operation, meaning that you're not
paying high-end Senior Accountant wages for low-end
functions, such as data entry.

- Tokyo to San Francisco by row boat
- Japan increases foreign earnings in September
- Smaller bonuses spell trouble for retailers
- Major Japanese ad firms to focus on Internet

-> FamilyMart to buy am/pm

The shakeout in retailing continues, with the announcement
that Itochu-invested FamilyMart will buy out Rex Holding's
am/pm Japan convenience store chain in a deal worth around
JPY12bn (US$133m). FamilyMart is Japan's third largest
chain and with the deal will have 8,700 stores, not far
behind second-ranked Lawson, which has 9,665 stores. The
largest player in Japan is 7-Eleven, which has 12,471
stores. ***Ed: Rex Holdings is owned by Advantage Partners,
meaning yet another deal done for them. This time around,
however, the price seems rather low to us.** (Source: TT
commentary from wsj.com, Nov 13, 2009)

-> Tokyo to San Francisco by row boat

For some reason their feat has not been covered in the
local media, but it is an amazing achievement nonetheless.
Two British men have become the first people to row across
the Pacific Ocean. They took 189 days to cover the 8,000km
from Choshi port (near Tokyo) to San Francisco. They
arrived on Friday the 13th in good spirits, and were
greeted by a flotilla of small boats. ***Ed: This is a
great story, involving 20m waves and even bigger whales.
Read the story at the link below.**(Source: TT commentary
from sfgate.com, Nov 13, 2009)

-> Japan increases foreign earnings in September

The Current Account Surplus, a measure of national income
earned overseas versus payments made to foreign investors
in Japan unexpectedly grew in September, as the Asian
economies started to recover on the back of global
government stimulus programs. The surplus rose to
JPY1.57trn (US$17.5bn) from the same month the year before.
Bloomberg comments that most of the increase was probably
due to a pick up in exports to China, particularly for
Nissan autos. Exports overall for September were down 32.1%
from the year before and imports were down 37.7%. (Source:
TT commentary from bloomberg.com, Nov 9, 2009)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aHbTerV5P1aE

-> Smaller bonuses spell trouble for retailers

A Nikkei survey has found that the average winter bonus for
workers in major companies will fall by a record 14.04%
this year, to JPY736,453. This is the first double-digit
fall since the survey began in 1978. Of the 141 companies
in the survey, 80% said they are lowering bonuses from last
year's amounts. Exporters in particular are planning to
slice a full 30% off bonuses this year. ***Ed: Of course
this is terrible news for retailers, so look for very poor
financial results from most of the retailing sector in Q1
2010. Further, remember that these bonuses are of people in
major companies -- Japan's elite. For the other 80% of
workers, bonuses are much, much lower -- or in many cases
have been cut all together.**(Source: TT commentary from
nikkei.co.jp, Nov 15, 2009)

http://www.nni.nikkei.co.jp/e/ac/tnks/Nni20091114D14JFF01.htm

-> Major Japanese ad firms to focus on Internet

Better late than never, the Nikkei is reporting that two of
Japan's largest ad companies, Dentsu and Hakuhodo, are
going to place increased emphasis on their Internet
businesses. Dentsu has said it wants JPY250bn of web sales
by 2013, up from JPY150bn last year. Hakuhodo meantime has
said it will double its Internet revenue to JPY120bn from
JPY60bn this year. ***Ed: Of course what is galling both
companies is that as they see their profits drop by 30% or
more, Internet companies such as Rakuten and Gree are
reporting stunning increases in revenues and profits.
What both Dentsu and Hakuhodo probably fail to realize
however, is that all of the fast-growing Internet companies
have moved AWAY from advertising revenue and instead make
money directly off their users. To replicate this, both
Dentsu and Hakuhodo will have to stop being ad companies,
not likely, or start doing some M&A's... next year could
get interesting.** (Source: TT commentary from

Thought Of The Day
Worship and Meditation

Meditation makes the contact of mind with spirit; relaxation determines the capacity for spiritual receptivity. And this interchange of strength for weakness, courage for fear, the will of God for the mind of self, constitutes worship.

Thought Of The Day
No Greater Love

Greater love no man can have than this: that he would be willing to lay down his life for his friends -- and Jesus had such a love that he was willing to lay down his life for his enemies, a love greater than any which had hitherto been known on earth.

End of Japan

By The Mad Hedge Fund Trader

During the eighties, Japanese suddenly became the world’s most
valuable language, as the stock market soared from ¥6,000 to ¥39,000,
and PE multiples ballooned from 10 to 100, landing me a job at Morgan
Stanley. A friend who delivered sandwiches for a living was even able
to land a job at a special bracket firm because he had a reasonable
fluency in this impossible to learn, 5,000-year-old language. But
languages rise and fall, as do civilizations, and I’m afraid that my
language skills are getting downgraded to the relevance of Vulgar
Latin...

Speaker: Takashi Sakamoto, Founder and former CEO of BOOKOFF
Corporation and President of New Value Corporation

In 1991, Sakamoto-san left his career in selling used pianos
to establish BOOKOFF Corporation Limited., which has grown
into Japan's largest used bookstore with over 1000 locations.
Like most great business ideas, Sakamoto-san's idea for BOOKOFF
was extremely simple; sell used books in a clean, organized,
well-lit environment with well-trained and friendly employees.
The revenue model was equally simple but highly profitable;
buy used books at 10% of the list price and sell them for 50%
of the list price and if for some reason the book does not
sell for 3 months the book is sold for 100 yen.

With over 60 billion yen in annual sales, 4000+ staff,
and over 1000 BOOKOFF locations in Japan and abroad that
simple model seems to have worked very well.
BOOKOFF also diversified into several sub-brands such as used
sporting goods (B-Sports), used clothing (G-Mode), used
electronic (HARDOFF) and Tsutaya franchises.

Seating will be limited to 300 so please sign up early
while seats are available.

Wheels Of Misfortune

David Lopez was just another young man trying to make it for himself in Tempe, Ariz. In December 2008, David had had his heart set on buying himself a car so he wouldn't have to ride the bus any more.

"At the time he was just working at the mall trying to save money so he could get a car," says senior AMW correspondent Tom Morris, who worked on the story. "This was two days after Christmas, when the retail market is really busy, so he had been working pretty hard."

Without a ride for himself, David had to take the bus to and from work. On December 27, David left his job at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall early. On his way home that evening, cops say he happened to meet someone who claimed to have a lead on a car.

"His roommate said he's the kind of person who could meet somebody and befriend them very quickly," Tom said. "That's what people who know him best believe happened."

Just a few hours later, some of David's neighbors heard a knock on their door. Cops say it was David knocking, while he horrifically bled to death from stab wounds.

"He basically was stabbed in his apartment and staggered outside," Tom said. "The killer went out of the apartment and went in one direction, while David went in another, knocking on doors, looking for help."

David's neighbors quickly called 9-1-1. In a recording of the call -- featured on Saturday's show and on AMW.com -- David can be heard in the background pleading for help.

"It's heartbreaking because you don't often get to actually hear someone dying in that way," Tom said. "I've heard a lot of tapes in my 16 years here but I have not heard one where you can hear someone screaming ‘I am going to die.'"

David was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. that night, his killer still unknown. David's friends say that he was known to carry a lot of the money he'd earned in cash on him, but when cops searched his apartment, they found nothing.

One clue may hold the key to the mystery, however: a surveillance video from the bus. Tom, the host of AMW's regular feature "Caught On Tape," is no stranger to breaking down such visual evidence.

"It's one of my specialties here. In this case we had a chance to get a good look at the person who we believe killed David," Tom said. "It added to the mystery because no one who knew David recognized this guy. It leaves some questions unanswered."

That's where we're hoping viewers will be able to help. Tune in Saturday night for the full story, and call our hotline if you think you know who this mysterious young man is. In the meantime, check out the evidence on AMW.com.

"Who is this person? What is his name? How did he come to know David?" Tom asks. "We won't know the answers to those questions until we catch this guy."

Drugs and Misses

Luqman Abdullah had a lot of potential. He was a former college football player, a gifted and a talented student.

But cops say he grew up in a neighborhood inhabited by the "Bloods" gang, and nurture unfortunately triumphed over nature.

According to police, he ended up using his gifts for evil rather than good, controlling the drug trade for all of Elizabeth, N.J. and a significant chunk of nearby Newark.

"I think he's a very intelligent guy," says AMW's Keith Greenburg, who worked on the story. "According to investigators, he blends in well at the upscale restaurants he frequents. At the same time, they say he can change very quickly and turn into a brutal street thug. These are neighborhoods where people tend to draw guns because of perceived slights. He allegedly was so powerful that drug dealers either had to purchase their inventory from him or give him a kickback. You don't control those areas without being ruthless."

Cops say that Abdullah was so good at blending in and working the system that he has never served prison time, despite being arrested about 15 times. He's known on the streets as "Mr. Not Guilty."

That didn't stop cops from trying, however.

"They knew there was a problem in the area and they traced the source," Keith said. "They say they found out this was the guy in charge and they went to great lengths to monitor him."

Those great lengths were known as "Operation Red Zone," an effort to monitor Abdullah's cell phone activity and trace his movements through hidden surveillance cameras.

"They cut down branches from trees and were able to place cameras on telephone poles," Keith said. "They infiltrated his stash house with a warrant for what they called a ‘sneak and peak'."

After picking the lock, investigators were able to gain access to Abdullah's drug den, taking in the evidence with night vision cameras.

While there, detectives say that they uncovered three kilos of cocaine, 16 bricks of heroin, 30,000 vials, enough kilogram wrappers to package 690,000 individual servings of cocaine, $80,000 in drug proceeds, two .45-caliber pistols and an AK-47.

You can check out that night vision footage on the show this Saturday night.

When cops finally cornered Abdullah in a parking lot of the Menlo Park Mall in Edison, N.J., Abdullah used his physical prowess to race across a busy highway and eventually escape.

He left behind his cell phone, however, leaving cops with new photo evidence that can also be found in the show and online. The escape scene is featured in the show's reenactment of the story, which was quite an ordeal in and of itself.

"They closed off a very busy roadway," Keith said. "They would close it off, shoot a little bit, open it up again, let some cars and trucks go by, and then close it again. They had to shoot and stop and shoot and stop. You can't just close off a busy New Jersey roadway entirely."

You can see that suspenseful scene on Saturday Night, and in the meantime get the full story on AMW.com.

Thought Of The Day
The Experience of Knowing God

Descriptive words of things beautiful cannot thrill like the sight thereof, neither can creedal words inspire men's souls like the experience of knowing the presence of God.

Perfection: The Plan

The plan for your intellectual evolution is, indeed, one of sublime perfection, but you are far short of that divine goal as you function in the tabernacles of the flesh.
