I like covers for a while but a usually get sick of them... except for
the Stanton-Miranda cover on their A Mean to An End - The Music of Joy
Division Cover CD.
Hey if there's any around Toronto who would like to get together to

Sam Riley will be Ian Curtis
09/02/2006 5:10:00 AM - 5:10:00 AM
() Sam Riley has been cast as lead singer Ian Curtis and Alexandra
Maria Lara as his lover Annik on music video director Anton
Corbijn's Control, his fact-based debut feature on UK post-punk band
Joy Division.
It is a first big role for newcomer Riley – the troubled Curtis was
in his early 20s when he committed suicide in 1980 – whereas Lara
played Hitler's secretary in Downfall and has just finished work on
Francis Ford Coppola's Youth By Youth alongside Bruno Ganz and Tim
Roth.
It was already known that Samantha Morton would play Deborah Curtis,
who wrote the book on which Matt Greenhalgh's script is based.
Curtis will also get a co-producer credit, as will former Joy
Division manager and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, the
subject of the biopic 24 Hour Party People. The producers are Orian
Williams and Todd Eckert from Claraflora.
The Control team is still closing finance but hopes to being
shooting in mid-2006 in Manchester, Macclesfield and other areas of
England.
The film's title was inspired by the classic Joy Division song She's
Lost Control. New Order, the band that succeeded Joy Division, will
be recording new tracks for the film and the soundtrack album will
feature a number of re-recorded Joy Division songs.
Corbijn has worked on U2, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and Metallica videos
and is also known for his photographs of such musicians as the late
Miles Davis, R.E.M., David Bowie and Elvis Costello.
so far, here is the confirmed cast that should finally begin filming
this year. Directed by Anton Corbjin.
Ian Curtis - Sam Riley
Deborah Curtis - Samantha Morton
Annik Honore - Alexandra Maria Lara
Hello to all,
It's been quite a while since I've emailed/posted, but it is to
bring good news.
First, I have started the domain, iancurtis.info, and will have more
content for that site soon.
Second, there are quite a few images of original Joy Division
concert posters/flyers at Gigposters.com, and here's the direct link
to the JD posters:
http://www.gigposters.com/posters.php?band=46881
Also, this club/group has been online since 1998, almost 7 years now
and I hope to see more activity as the release of the film version
of "Touching From A Distance" approaches.
That's all for now.
Thanks,
Brian

It's off the soundtrack to 'The Crow' and I personally don't like it.
Reznor trys to bring it up to date but it sound's cheap in my opinion.
Also Moby covered 'New Dawn Fades' which is atrocious. An Irish punk/metal
band called Therapy? did a cover of 'Isolation' once which wasn't that bad,
more of a rock affair but not a scratch on the original.

Let's not get negative about covers of Joy Division, constructive
criticism apply's for most. Although, I do admit some covers have not
been the best musical interpretation of the music of Joy Division.
Nevertheless, people will hear the latest incarnation and hopefully
turn to the original. Many people will then hear, for the first time,
the lyrics of Ian Curtis, this amazing poet, who, after 25 years
since his death we still celebrate, however, briefly his legacy.
I was told that Nine Inch Nails did a cover of Dead Souls - has anyone heard
this and if so, is it any good?

The key to a successful tribute album is not only to have a brilliant
band to pay tribute to, but a selection of unique bands playing the
covers. A Means to an End is a beautiful selection of the songs of Joy
Division, arguably one of the most important bands of the 20th century,
played by some of the musicians they inspired. From the
characteristically angular Girls Against Boys hardcore version of
"She's Lost Control" to the mind-blowing slowcore covers by Low
("Transmission" taken to a light-permeable crawl) and Codeine
("Atmosphere," a fitting choice), it is clear that these are people
whose very being was altered by Joy Division. Other highlights include
a heavy guitar-laden "New Dawn Fades" with Moby sounding a lot like Ian
Curtis; underrated space rockers Further (who went on to form the Tyde
and Beachwood Sparks and to get some deserved attention) doing
"Insight"; a noisy, neurotic, ripping "They Walked In Line" by
GodheadSilo, and a shockingly upbeat version of "Interzone" by hardcore
punk rockers Face to Face. The album ends with the art rock of Tortoise
drawing Joy Division to their logical extreme by pulling "As You Said"
into a broad, atmospheric, repetitive, spacious groove.

The cover i'm thinking that your drunk friend alludes to must be the crime
that is Paul Young's vomit inducing version. Somehow he has taken any emotion
from the song (though that itself is some kind of achievement!) and sings it as
if he's constipated.
To anyone who is not au fait with Mr. Young he had some short lived success
in the early to middle eighties in Britain with his middle of the road faux
soul atrocities.
Hope that ive been some help with your question.

Perhaps some of you are interested but not aware of this yet (it's not
exactly getting a ton of promotion). They are playing a couple shows
in California in late April. Then Chicago on May 3rd, and New York on
May 5th. With any luck a couple more dates will be added before they
begin their European tour in late May. But don't hold your breath.
I expect to hop a train to NYC to see them. Perhaps I'll see some of
you there???

Mojo magazine has a big Joy Division feature in the April 2005, with
Ian on the cover in the familiar Kevin Cummins pic with coat and
cigarette. The main piece is by Pat Gilbert, and there are
additional pieces on Peter Saville and New Order. I don't suppose
we'll learn much new, but it's nice to see anyway. I always keep Joy
Division features like this. There's also an interview with Natalie
Curtis, who's now 26 and a photographer.
I have to say that i actually quite liked 24HR Party People. I was quite
sceptical about how the film would turn out, but i was pleasently suprised. As
a Manchunian myself I have to say the night-time ariel shot of Manchester as
Hallelujah kicks in is my fave. When Coogan narrates about the 'crumbling
warehouses and cheap abundant drugs' my heart sinks. In my eyes, Manchester has
lost much of its soul gradually over the years. All this investment may bring
new facilities and fancy shops, but a price has been paid. It was the fact that
Manchester was so imperfect in the 'good old days' that gave you every reason to
be in love with the place. What could be more deserving? Nowadays Manchester
is lifeless facade of pretensiousness. Hollow and without any real substance.
I speak to my friends about this and many of them agree and were fairly
confident it isnt a simple case of nostalgia. 24 HR Party People seems aware of
this too. Its not just the music, it was the place too.
Its a shame.
As for the JD film people are speaking about. well. i hadnt heard anything
of it. I do like Anton Corbijn (?) though. Was a great Depeche Mode fan when i
was younger, plus, if im not mistaken, he did the Atmosphere video too. Sure
looks like his style. As for the book, Ive read it too and would also
recommoend a read (god my spellind is bad, sorry). The aim of Debbie writing it
is stated as being an attempt to de-mythologise the 'suicidal lead singer'
iconic status attributed to Iain, and, when you read the book you have to agree
she has every right to. I personally found the book very involving and at
times, quite sad, at others, hilarious.
Anyway, ill chip off now, ive waffled enough. Ill end by saying hello to
everyone that receives this as this is my first contribution to the group
Best Wishes,

I look forward to the finished film. Afterall, it's likely that it

Which bands of today would you say have been influenced by the music

I would like to suggest Franz Ferdinand as a starter. Which are yours?
