I've been amazed by their sudden popularity myself. Maybe humankind
is smarter than we ever gave it credit for before? In any case, you
should do yourself a favor and read the book. There is precious
little information available about Ian as a person, and I find every
little bit fascinating. For good or bad, Deborah's book is certainly
our best resource for biographical information on Ian.

a very good point about it being in monochrome..it definately wouldnt have
the right ambience to the film if its in ' technicolor '!! I really do hope i am
wrong in my feelings towards this movie.

Well, I, for one, am excited about the prospect of an Ian bio.
Sure, it will probably suck. But perhaps a miracle will occur and
they'll do it right. Clue one: will they be smart enough to film
all or part of it in black and white?

Any thoughts on this?

Joy Division story to become film
By Michael Osborn
BBC News entertainment reporter

Ian Curtis's fame lives on 24 years after his death
The life of late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis is to be made into a
film, it has been announced.

The Manchester-based production is called Touching From A Distance,
after a book by Curtis's widow Deborah which forms the basis for the
film.

Music mogul Tony Wilson, who headed the record company Joy Division
were signed to, will be co-executive producer.

The musician committed suicide in 1980 aged 23, shortly before the
band were due to go on tour in the US.

Mr Wilson, who has remained friends with Curtis's widow and daughter
Natalie, who he says asked for his involvement to make the
film "official".

"People have different ideas as to why Ian committed suicide, so
maybe the film will reflect those different views," he told the BBC
News website.

Plans for a separate Joy Division film had been announced at the
Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but the project did not get
off the ground as it failed to get the backing of Curtis's family.

Mr Wilson, who was also involved with Joy Division's sucessor band
New Order, as well as the Happy Mondays, said he would "rather not"
appear in the film.

He made a cameo appearance in 24 Hour Party People, in which his
leading role was played by Steve Coogan.

"I'm not an actor and I did a lousy job playing my part in 24 Hour
Party People," said the Factory Records founder, who has been
associated with the Manchester music scene since the 1970s.

"Film people have a tendency to mess up when they touch music, but I
hope this one works.

Biopic plans

"This is much more than the music - they want to do the real story of
Ian," he said.

The film is to be directed by Dutch-born Anton Corbijn, who has made
music movies for Depeche Mode and U2.

It will be produced by a US production company, while the widow of
Ian Curtis will also be an executive producer.

hey, sorry i didn't explain fully. The Crow (the novel) was inspired by Joy
Division and the author created the imagery with their lyrics in mind
(particularly shadowplay). In the film Brandon's guitar solo has elements of
shadowplay mixed into it. kind of a vague inclusion but still good!

Hello papalazarou and welcome.

This is more of a reply to those who have some difficulty
understanding the relationship between music and loyalty to one band
more than an other.

I feel It's quite like someone who may have had a religious
convergence. They exclude, for a moment, anything outside the
framework they've set themselves, involving ideas they have no
control over.

Because of their enthusiasm for the particular style of something (in
this case music) their perception becomes distorted. They become
dogmatic and refuse to listen to an alternative viewpoint, or dismiss
it as somewhat less than.

Hopefully, they will move on to look at all music as a ceative
contribution to the world. A common, dynamic culture.

yeh really like those tracks, but also love 'shadowplay' partly because it's the
first 'JD' track i heard (also because it's sampled in the crow). loads of my
mates wind me up by saying that 'JD' are crap and that 'NO' are miles better! i
don't mind 'NO', but not really my sort of thing. talking of 'NO' i discovered
on an old cd a live 'Orgy' cover of 'Blue Monday'; seems a strange cover for
them to do, as their style is (not very good) and very different. i don't see
how it's possible to like 'NO' though without liking 'JD' and as for not even
knowing who they were...

hi pixie girl, welcome!

my fav JD track is New Dawn Fades, followed closely by Day of the
Lords.

what're yours?

what gets me are some new order fans - now i'm not pulling a 'more
punk than thou' or anything, i see the difference, and everyone's
entitled to their choice. i really love early new order, movement,
and i think it makes sense that they went a different direction, and
i think they evolved and put out a lot of great dance club songs too,
some of the very best, 'everytime i see you falling i get down on my
knees and pray' ... it doesn't get much better than that for that
80's club scene ....

BUT

i met a guy and we started talking about music (go figure) - we hit
it off right away - had a lot of very similar fav bands - he loves
the smiths, nirvana, etc. So when he said his favorite band of all
was new order, i said, awesome, and i added 'and you love Joy
Division, right?' to which he replied, 'Who?'. Now i know we all
have been exposed to different bands, and i'm sure i don't know of
some killer stuff out there that other people would guess i did (and
i'm open to suggestions, always looking, it's my obession), but to
love NO and not know much, if anything, about JD was a real shocker.

again, i don't write this to put anyone down, he's now a very good
friend, i don't think anyone's taste in music is superior to anyone
else's - you like whatever you like. i just found it odd, so i
thought i'd share it with you all.

here, i can illustrate the same fault in myself - i'm a hardcore
bauhaus/tones on tail/early love and rockets/david j/early daniel
ash/peter murphy/dalis car fan, but a friend did the same thing to
me - she asked, "so, you like the bubblemen, right?", to which i
replied, "Who?". And then i got to thinking, and realized i had
heard of a project they did (although i thought it was more of a joke
than anything), in fact i recall something on the LandR video
collection i have called that. But that was a relatively small side
project; I see a few 12inch and 7inch releases on gemm.com for sale,
and i'm surprised i don't own any of them. But let's face it Joy
Division has left a substantially large mark on the face of music and
are more than a little bit less obscure than the bubblemen - or is it
just me? lol

cheers,

Transmission.

I see the man with no ideas and who regularly drops his pants and
then gets an £80 million advance from his record company nicked the
style for his latest single. I speak of course of Robbie 'no talent'
Williams.

I have to agree. I love them too. About a year ago when I bought the cd
I couldn't stop listening to it. They're brilliant, dark, ethereal,
just beautiful sounding. Plus I live in New York City so I can relate
to songs personally...the track "NYC" is incredible!

And I play guitar and use a Memory Man effect which they must be using
also...very trippy!

I can't wait for their next album...or is it out?

rock on!

I always thought they sounded more like Wire. Interpol's a good
band.

Well someone had to mention the New Yorkers, and I for one am a big
fan. Ok they are not JD, but they are brilliant. Comparing to JD may
be a tad unfair, certainly the elements are there in sound and
atmosphere, however lyrics wise many differences. Would like to hear
what other members think of Interpol and the comparisoms.

I thought the scene portraying the last night at the Hacienda was
hilarious with Tony Wilson addressing the crowd with the immortal
line: 'please leave in a disorderly fashion, loot the offices and may
a thousand blooms blossom in Manchester' Classic stuff!
