Description
Live performance photo circa 1977. Thanks to Coskun for sharing.
Jane Relf was the first vocalist with the band Renaissance (1969 -1970). She also sang with Illusion (1976 - 1979), and Stairway (1986 - 1995). Her voice can also be heard on the Jim McCarty 1994 album "Out of the Dark," and on "Through the Fire," the 2001 release by Renaissance Illusion.
After her brother's death (May 14, 1976), it was Jane who ultimately reunited the original lineup of Renaissance to form Illusion. All indicators show that Illusion probably would not have formed without Jane’s wanting to carry her brother’s artistic vision for the band.
We produced a radio show tribute to Jane Relf which aired on WPKN 89.5 FM on November 13, 2003. All 29 songs that Jane Relf sang as lead vocalist and released (solo, Renaissance, Illusion, Stairway), plus a 9-song-sampler of Jane's vocalise, were featured on this WPKN special. The 2008 box set, released by Renaissance Records, was resequenced from the 2003 radio show to fit additional tracks, including Jane's vocal demo of "Carpet of the Sun."
Jane is the sister of the late Keith Relf. Keith Relf and Jim McCarty were the primary writers of the songs that Jane sang. Keith and Jim were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of the Yardbirds. The vocal work of Jane Relf indeed shows a Hall of Fame pedigree. This is our tribute to her and her collaborators. A fan club, as it were.
